Publisher's Summary

From the number-one New York Times best-selling author of the Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon Sanderson, comes the first book in a new, action-packed thrill ride of a series - Steelheart. Ten years ago, Calamity came. It was a burst in the sky that gave ordinary men and women extraordinary powers. The awed public started calling them Epics.

But Epics are no friend of man. With incredible gifts came the desire to rule. And to rule man you must crush his wills.

Nobody fights the Epics...nobody but the Reckoners. A shadowy group of ordinary humans, they spend their lives studying Epics, finding their weaknesses, and then assassinating them.

And David wants in. He wants Steelheart - the Epic who is said to be invincible. The Epic who killed David's father. For years, like the Reckoners, David's been studying, and planning - and he has something they need. Not an object, but an experience.

He's seen Steelheart bleed.

And he wants revenge.

"What if supervillains ruled the world?"
Where does Steelheart rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I have been tricked into buying a few YA audiobooks since starting my Audible subscription. I am a sucker for highly rated fantasy, and Audible does a poor job of differentiating YA titles in the genre. For the most part these have been awful listening experiences that taught me to be wary. Sanderson's Steelheart is not nearly as bad.

What other book might you compare Steelheart to and why?

Like Sanderson's non YA works he does a great job of world building. In this post Calamity Earth supervillains rule the Earth with very limited resistance. For those who love a Sandersonian plot twist or three you will not be disappointed.

    "I like this series"
If you could sum up Steelheart in three words, what would they be?

    Dystopian supervillain world

What other book might you compare Steelheart to and why?

Any heist story. Daniel Faust comes to mind, since Sanderson straight up writes sci-fi technology as magic.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

    Nothing in particular. It worked.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The fake profanity. Ngggggh, sparks that's bad.

    Any additional comments?

I've heard Sanderson has churned out some truly cringe-inducingly bad stuff, but when his writing style works it's golden. It struck just the right balance between exposition to action to fit the tone (regular people against demigod level supervillains who only succeed due to careful planning and research) that the story required. It felt very much like a heist movie with no actual heist.

That said, making up profanity for a futuristic setting is very hit or miss at the best of times. When the author is a Mormon with all the puritanical tendencies that implies...yeah. Sparks no, that's bad.

    "Not a favorite"

I was unable to complete this book . I am not a fan of the "super hero or anti hero" genre. It delves too much into the fantasy genre, of which, I am not a fan, but for those who are the book and the series just might tickle your fancy.

"I was really surprised with how much action was in this book."

I read this after finishing the Mist Born series. I didn't think there could be nearly as much action in any other book but this book over delivered on the action. It's totally different from the mist born series but so good.

"Trust when I say, you will not see anything coming"

Ok so, the best parts are the last few chapters. I was honestly not expecting anything that happened during those chapters to happen. Seriously. After finishing the recording and reading this review, you will agree with me. That I am confident in. Otherwise, great plot. Sanderson clearly knows how to leave people gripping for more. Liked the romance twist too. ESPECIALLY AT THE END OMG.
