Publisher's Summary

Lieutenant Callum Harper hadn't intended on punching his commanding officer quite so hard. But maybe it wasn't such a bad turn of events. Court-martialed and dumped on a reject raft bound for Earth, Cal feels optimistic about a life where getting blown up, shot, or even eaten is altogether less of a concern. And, more importantly, a life where the only person he's responsible for is himself.

Unfortunately fate doesn't favor the mundane. Crash-landing on a lethal planet, and with technology failing all around him, Cal must take his fellow passengers under his wing in order to survive and unravel the reasons behind their situation. But the cause is far worse than any of them could have imagined, for theirs is a small part of a much larger crisis. Colonized space is under attack. Humanity is on the verge of chaos. And those who enjoy such anarchy are already beginning to thrive. Yet Cal and his new companions will discover that mankind isn't the true threat, not by a long shot.

Good crew of characters and great story telling

Where does Star Splinter rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's up there. Star Splinter has the simplicity of a Heinlein book which is great because many sci fi authors tend to over do it of late.

What other book might you compare Star Splinter to and why?

Hard to say it stands alone

What does Alex Wyndham bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great narration really let's my imagination relax and the world of Cresseu is created around me.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Did not cry. Laughed several times, if was a breath of fresh air in sci fi

Any additional comments?

Keep them coming!!!!!!!!!!!

Action-packed start of a new series

This is a difficult review for me to write. I really enjoyed the book and found myself listening to it whenever possible. But it wasn't the kind of story that made me stay up late into the night. The stories that make me late to work or want to call in sick are the ones that get 5 stars from me.

As a first book Star Splinter has what it takes to become a promising new series, and the author should be commended. It contained many of the elements a good sci-fi story should - decent character development, plausible tech, an alien menace, and plenty of action. Missing for me were things like character back stories and more descriptive military tactics. The ships, weapons and other human enhancements were imaginative but lacked the kind of depth that I enjoy but other readers might find boring.

Other things that knocked a star off my rating were the cliched caricatures that made up the main plot line - like the smart-mouthed girl, boy genius, wise old man, beautiful scientist, pirates, and cyborgs. I rolled my eyes more than once but I suppose they needed to be there for the story to ultimately take the the shape it did. After a while I began to feel like there was too much "borrowing" from other story's cast of characters.

Having said that, there was enough here to keep me reading consistently each day until it was finished. I truly enjoyed all the different landscapes and locales the story took us to. I also found the descriptions of the various alien races interesting and unique. Cal was also well written as a good leader although a reluctant one. The fight scenes were well done too, but things always seemed to be working in the team's favor just in the nick of time too often.

As for the narrator, Alex Whyndam, bravo. He was excellent. I literally could not imagine any of the characters from this point forward being spoken by anyone but Wyndham.

Considering I've been on a bit of a sci-fi binge the last 12 months, devouring book after book, I say give Star Splinter a chance. I wouldn't put it up there in my top 10, but easily in my top 25 this year. I expect the author will continue to improve as the series rolls along, and I look forward to the next one.

Different from other stories

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I like the story. There was a good match up of SciFi technology, characterization and action. One thing that will come across quickly is this is not an American author. The author and narrator are British. Some of the words/terms used in the story are British and if you're not familiar with some of their slang minor parts of the story might leave you a little perplexed. I enjoyed the story.

What other book might you compare Star Splinter to and why?

None that I can think of.

Have you listened to any of Alex Wyndham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't read any of Alex's other stories but I'll be on the lookout for more now.

Missing a cohesive narrative

Star Splinter has gotten such raving reviews, and the idea seemed interesting, I had to give this a shot. I was left wondering what the fuss was about.

Cressey has written some fine pieces here. He has cobbled together a crew akin to the show Firefly. Only instead of backstories that sort of make sense, these people are dragged into camaraderie when their star ship crashes into a Mars that has been terraformed into a great game reserve. Because of this and the fact that Earth has vanished, they become a family. Oh, and then there is the fact that the group crash lands next to the captains childhood survival guide & he becomes part of the group as well.

Some of the fun starts in when the group gets the Star Splinter. But that episode revolves around a duping that is kind of silly. Then they go on to other things and yuck. The plot is goofy. It could have been good. But its too much like a comic book.

The reading was excellent the story was only good

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The ending was too rote

Which character – as performed by Alex Wyndham – was your favorite?

Jumper was the best

Any additional comments?

While I understand this is a multi part story the ending was too formatted and didn't leave me wanting more or cursing needing explanations. The characters leveled out three-quarters the way through the reading and didn't expand further or provide a twist in the plot line.

Very entertaining

Of over 1,000 audio books I've purchased, I've given 5 star ratings to less than ten of them. Great imagery and plotting well delivered by a skilled voice artist. A good team that I hope continue to work together.

A fantastic and frenetic start to a new series!

What made the experience of listening to Star Splinter the most enjoyable?

I was awed when I looked at the release date for this title and realized it had been sitting here available on Audible for the better part of TWO YEARS! How did I miss this great book? In the vein of my favorite lone-wolf and small-but-fierce-team battle sci-fi, this title has it all: A daunting, powerful & barely-understood antagonistic race of mind-controlling aliens, a band of tougher-than-nails, relatable protagonists pulled from all the weird and wonderful corners of this universe, intense action scenes & more! The 'Star Splinter' team quickly works its way into your heart with their quirky manners and relationships, and the plot maintains a steady pace forward, not stopping to enter into too much extraneous exposition. The narration was brilliant, with Alex Wyndham's British baritone a perfect fit for Callum Harper's accent. All in all, a great listen! I'll definitely be waiting for the second book in this series!

What did you like best about this story?

The cast of characters: Weird, wonderful, brilliant, daring, & light-hearted, the 'Star Spliter' team's got something for everyone!
