Publisher's Summary

The war is over. Earth is lost. Running is the only option. And it may already be too late.

Caleb is a former Marine Raider and commander of the Vultures, a search and rescue team that's spent the last two years pulling high-value targets out of alien-ravaged cities and shipping them off-world.

When his new orders call for him to join 40,000 survivors aboard the last starship out, he thinks his days of fighting are over. The Deliverance represents a fresh start and a chance to leave the war behind for good.

Except the war won't be as easy to escape as he thought.

And the colony will need a man like Caleb more than he ever imagined.

Enter the universe of the Forgotten with Deliverance, the first book in the Forgotten Colony series. If you're a fan of Aliens, Battlestar Galactica, Starship Troopers, Ender's Game, or Edge of Tomorrow, you'll love this epic military sci-fi thriller.

Good attempt but poor execution

The author has good instincts but he needs help on the military and science of it all (rank structures, tactics, attitude, how massive star ships would be constructed, material science...). He doesn't seem to understand some of the basics and it hurts the story. I wanted it to be good and to his credit much of time you can let it go but there are some persistent errors that can't be explained by the world he's created.

Felt too much like a young man wrote this...

Might just be me, but good writing g shouldn't make it clear who the author is. The characters absolutely, but every woman was 'cute' and tough while the story felt too... straightforward maybe? It felt like listening to someone read a first person shooter video game description from 10 years ago. Dont mean to be so harsh, it wasnt bad just... there was no depth to anything it felt like. I dont mean characters necesarily.

It's like Starship Troopers and Alien had a baby

I've been absolutely hooked on the Forgotten universe these past few months and this new addition didn't disappoint in the slightest!
Even if you haven't read the first Forgotten series this stands up on its own as a post apocalyptic series on humanities last ditch effort to free themselves from the Alien menace that has crippled Earth. Its a group of Marines wildly outnumbered and faced with impossible odds as they try to preserve humanity as best they can.
I love the blended genre of Sci-fi/Horror and Forbes does it justice so well. definitely looking forward to book 2

Lacking

Hard to finish. No charter development, and bad decisions, leaves you not caring what happens.

Just terrible....highly repetitive

I stopped listening after Chapter 27 (over half way through) when I knew it would never get any better - much longer than I should have listened.

Through 27 chapters this is almost literally every thirty seconds of the book: shoot and kill the monster. move to next spot. 30 seconds later - shoot and the monster. move to next spot. 30 seconds later- shoot and kill the monster. move to the next spot. 30 seconds later - shoot and kill the monster. and the same thing over and over and over for 27 chapters before I finally gave up! There may have been three or four 5- 10 minutes spots of normal dialog in the entire 4 hours and 30 minutes I listened. There was absolutely no story in this. Literally, the entire book seems to be, shoot and kill the monster, move to the next spot.

This has got to be the worst book I have ever listened to or read. I couldn't finish it.

Great Beginning!!

This was a fantastic beginning to the Forgotten Colony saga. M.R. Forbes does an amazing job introducing readers to the characters and "fleshing" them out along the way!! Recommend to any Sci-Fi fan out there!!

Meh

The beginning through me off. The are highly trained marines yet they don't do the basics like covering fire and standing around in active zone with out a weapon razed. Narrator was good. story was predictable.

Nothing special.

You can pretty much see where the author filed the serial numbers off ALIENS.

Fast Paced

We start off, rather hurriedly, with a group of marines led by Sgt Caleb Card. He and his Vultures are tasked with pulling people out of dangerous situations and taking them to a spaceship which will take some 40,000 people to a new planet to colonise. However, they have to fight their way through thousands of xenotrife (trife for short) if they are to survive. Matters are not helped when a number of the trife manage to board the spaceship before lift-off.

There is no real character building in this first book as it moves fast from one situation to another. Also, I am a little unsure that the command structure on the ship is believable - too few officers in the chain of command. That said, this is sci-fi, with some fantasy thrown in.

Good work

Its a good piece of work, especially later in the book. ill not get in to the details as I dont want to spoil it but all I would say, is that it seems to jump forward father quick, if I had to guess it perhaps feels like an editor has hacked away chunks in order to hit a target. I dont believe the Author has deliberately done this as it makes it a little unbelievable and I think the vision for where this book goes is probably much deeper.

This is notably evident in moments before Deliverance takes off, the escalation curve is so steep, it borders on unbelievable.
youd could argue this was by design to show the severity of their situation but if that were the case it could have been depicted better with a prolonged chapter, rather than the serious of actions by characters that has massive effect of subsequent events, Then there are some interpersonal relationship ramps, notably the relationship between the main character and the "Sheriff" and scene where we learn that one of the crew has another motive and is quite happy to kill for it.

I dont believe that it has a massive negative effect but id rather read a full fat version given the choice. if the author is reading this, please dont let your editor hack your work, give us your full vision, reading a 15 hour book is perfectly fine if it makes it better :)

anyhow, dont miss this one, I think it works well and I look forward to knowing where its going next

Great story bad narration

I have listened to all the previous books which are amazing. But the new narrator in this book sounds like a monotone android and I couldn't get past chapter 2 which was a major let down. I recommend reading this over the audio version.
