Publisher's Summary

Accountant turned professional monster hunter Owen Zastava Pitt managed to stop the nefarious Old Ones' invasion plans last year, but as a result made an enemy out of one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Now an evil death cult known as the Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition wants to capture Owen in order to gain the favor of the great Old Ones. The Condition is led by a fanatical necromancer known as the Shadow Man. The government wants to capture the Shadow Man and has assigned the enigmatic Agent Franks to be Owen's full-time bodyguard, which is a polite way of saying that Owen is monster bait.

With supernatural assassins targeting his family, a spy in their midst, and horrific beasties lurking around every corner, Owen and the staff of Monster Hunter International don't need to go hunting, because this time the monsters are hunting them. Fortunately, this bait is armed and very dangerous.

What the Critics Say

"This lighthearted, testosterone-soaked sequel to 2009's Monster Hunter International will delight fans of action horror with elaborate weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, disgusting monsters, and an endless stream of blood and body parts." (Publishers Weekly)

What did you like best about Monster Hunter Vendetta? What did you like least?

The main characters were quite engaging and it was nice to meet more family members (this is book 2 after all) but every time a real problem occurred more improbable powers appeared and it just got silly.

Would you ever listen to anything by Larry Correia again?

2 books have been fun, mostly, but enough is enough.

    Any additional comments?

This is such a boys annual for adults book. Lots of shooting, slashing, car crashes and a hero who is totally indestructible to the point where he survives what no human being before him has survived. Oh, and he is the only hope for the future of the human race. I usually don't have too much trouble suspending belief in fantasy novels but this tested me. However, if you love pure action and impossible heroes, you'll love this book.

This book was a disappointment for me. The reviews and ratings made it seem like an amazing squeal to the OK first MHI. It wasn't! It just dragged. And i gotta say, the author has the least creative names, Lord Machado, and The Condition? really? I cringed every time i heard that. Sounded just so silly and childish.
I think the narration is what kept me from just giving up. The narrator is very good, although i found his voice acting for Owen just over the top. Too loud, and too much. but the rest were quite fantastic!

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

    Eh...

Has Monster Hunter Vendetta turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. It's not all that bad. It's a pulpy action book. It just could have been set in a highschool based on the trite interactions and relationships of the characters.

What aspect of Oliver Wyman’s performance would you have changed?

    Nothing. Oliver did fine.

Could you see Monster Hunter Vendetta being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    No

"A Macho Sandwich with Double Cheesiness"

The "Monster Hunter" series is something that your sane voice is telling you to hate, but the sheer ridiculousness of the story coupled with the over-the-top machismo and cheesiness somehow overrides that voice. In the end, you find yourself thoroughly enjoying the ride and groaning as required.

This book is like a comic book sans art work. What is fun is how the author has liberally pulled upon other references (think H.P. Lovecraft, Bram Stoker, etc.) and brought them along for the ride. The second book in the series, it did a good job of continuing the story from the first book. Although this book could stand on it's own, you'll be much better situated if you start with book one.

In summary. if you have a good sense of humour and can tolerate ridiculous situations and dialogue, you will enjoy this book. If this isn't your cup of tea, then avoid this series. I'm just crazy enough to have found it very enjoyable.

"Second Curse, Same as the First"

This book was just like its predecessor. On the plus side you get an adventure loaded with action, monsters, and guns (and guns). If you're a sucker for action (and guns), Vendetta might have enough to hold your interest.

Unfortunately, the story is almost a repeat of the first book. I feel like I could have just read Monster Hunter International twice.

There was really no deepening of the very superficial characters. His use of stereotypes makes me wonder whether he's ever really met another human. His main character is even less human than the other "humans" in the book. Owen Pitt thinks in taglines and catchphrases. He is a narcissist who knows even better than the reader that the story is about him. He feels guilt for getting his friends into trouble because the bad guys are after him, but he doesn't act on this guilt other than to just "feel" it momentarily every time someone off to his left or right gets killed. The only other emotion he has room for in his ammo pouch is anger and all its synonyms. I forgave this after the first book, but by the end of the sequel, it needs some character development.

Correia started his series with a "world in the balance" climax so he had nowhere to go except to give us another similar ending. I can't speak for the rest of the series, but I feel a lot of similarities in narrative and main character to Goodkind's, "Wizard's First Rule" series. Ruggedly independent man with powers no one can explain faces unavoidable, world-ending conundrum that he defeats with the timely assistance of a Deus ex Machina all with libertarian undertones. With Goodkind it got old slowly (his characters had personalities), not so with Correia. I think I am done after this.

The reader, Wyman, stepped up his game in this edition. He went a little bolder with some of the characterizations to good effect. I am not blown away, but I am well satisfied.

"not up to the author's usual quality"

The main character in the book, Owen Pitt acted like a petulant child. It is hard to like a book when the main hero is a jerk. He doesn't have to like them, but he should at least respect someone who saves his life repeatedly. Besides that, Pitt was a bumbling idiot. First books by Larry Correia that I didn't like. I did like the first book in the series but it will be a long time, if ever before I get another Monster Hunter book.

"DING, DING ROUND 2 OF A MONSTER BATTLE"

After the first book, "Monster Hunter International", I knew I'd be in for a treat and was not disappointed. The prequel was really good, pity ratings only go to 5 a really great monster battle of a book.

Which character – as performed by Oliver Wyman – was your favourite?

I think all the characters are interesting and believable, did feel that the English accent was a tad iffy, but the more I listened the less I noticed

    Any additional comments?

Wasn't sure what to expect with the first book - but have been dragged into the series and am getting a feel for the characters, have just started book 4, so they can't be that bad.

    "a wicked series."

I love this series, listened to it numerous times. the characters are great and it's full of warmth and humour as well as monsters. the only criticism is that although the narrator is generally very good, he really struggles with doing foreign accents especially English ones but that is a small complaint.

    "A good sequel,"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

yes i mean its a good book, with humour and gangster gnomes. yes you heard me gangster gnomes. what up dog. u feeleng me bruv gnomes. i have to dof my cap to Larry just for that. in other parts it continues the series on well and develops characters well.

Who was your favorite character and why?

my favorite character is hard to say, it could be G gnome. but owen is normally a good shout as he is the main character. but you know what Its got to be agent franks. (interesting fact the word Agent comes from the roman latin agentes who were like the secret police of the ancient world). yes ill go with franks as he tops out and king bad ass level 10.

What does Oliver Wyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Oliver wyman in my opinion is a solid narrator who should be chosen more often. I cant tell you how many books ive started listening to with a poor american narrator that ruins the story. this felllow is really a good and really spins his own emotions into the tale. give it more of a feel than some of the dry renditions u hear.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

mostly humour and kick ass excitment.

    Any additional comments?

please people listen to this book, its fun and action packed and does it well without taking itself to seriously which i love.

"2nd in the series that I'm 100% happy I found"

When you find a great series, you want to dig your teeth into it - the world that Larry Correia has created in these is brilliant, it's so close to the real world that it could very well exist without us knowing, add in the amazing reading by Oliver Wyman, this series just becomes astounding

The main characters are great, realistic, and are fun to learn about, along with the stories in the series being engaging - while listening the books I've broken out into grins, laughter & quite often lost in the story and almost missing my train station

With the story moving on a-pace, great characters like Franks, the superb team that support Owen the monster hunting accountant, and when you hear them being portrayed in the audio book, you can see them in your mind, and I've already cast a film (e.g. Margot Robbie for Holly), this only makes the books better & more enjoyable

If you want a really well written series, that is incredibly read, then you can't go far wrong with this book & the series - I've spread these books to friends who have spread them to family & it's gone from there, all from me finding one on here... you couldn't do that if the book & series weren't great!

Download, listen & enjoy - this series is brilliant and I can't wait for more!!!
