Publisher's Summary

This first book of the Holding Their Own series, A Story of Survival, is set in the year 2015, when the world is burdened by the second Great Depression. The United States, already weakened by internal strife, becomes the target of an international terror plot. A series of attacks results in thousands of casualties and disables the country's core infrastructure. The combination of economic hardship and the staggering blow of the terror attacks results in a collapse of the government.

This is a realistic story of how an average, middle class couple survives the cascading events brought on by international politics, high tech military actions and the eventual downfall of society. All of their survival skills are tested during the action packed expedition in a world that resembles the American West of 200 years past.

Worst Narrator Ever!!!

What disappointed you about Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival?

Nothing, the narrator was so bad I did finish the book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Joe Nobody again?

Not if the same narrator was used.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He can't read, it was painful to listen to. I should have listened to a sample, my bad.

Any additional comments?

I've never written a reveiw before but this narrator was so bad I just had to. Sorry Mr Nobody.

Who the heck produced this thing?????

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The story itself was moderately compelling but the production and narration of this book were just dreadful. I listen to audiobooks pretty much non-stop, and I can say with complete honesty that this was by far the worst narration job to which I have ever listened. It had me wincing on a fairly regular basis. Seemed that any word over two syllables was just more than the poor guy could handle. Please Joe, in future, get a "Somebody" to narrate your books!

I have never felt the need to write such a negative review before, but this book has forced me too.

Would you recommend Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival to your friends? Why or why not?

No. Too painful to listen to.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

In every conceivable way.

Very Poor Voice Talent

What aspect of D. Allen’s performance would you have changed?

Poor reading skills, low quality recording.Hire better voice talent next time.

Any additional comments?

I bought this book because I thought that I would be able to identify with it on many levels. I live in Houston, and I work in the oil field (same as main character). My wife and I are "preppers." We have a bugout plan which includes trying to get to the family ranch in south Texas in the event of a SHTF scenario -- all similarities with the story line.

Unfortunately the voice talent is so poor it makes the book difficult to get through. The performance felt "low-budget" and sounded as if it was recorded in the author's basement as opposed to a sound studio.

Some elements of the story were too far-fetched (ie. United States withdrawl from the U.N. among others).

As a veteran, the biggest disappointment for me was with the military engagements described in the book; they did not have an authentic feel. Accounts of military hardware and the manner in which they were deployed were wholly inaccurate (there is no such thing as a "stealth B-52", et al).

It seemed like the author failed to do his homework regarding the United States military. The author's apparent lack of reseach in this area made the battle sequences feel unconvincing and unrealistic.

I love this genre of books, and I hoped that this title would be great since I have so much in common with the main character. Too bad it did not live up to my expectations.

Pretty good story with very BAD delivery

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend listening to this book. I might recommend reading a paper copy.

What didn’t you like about D. Allen’s performance?

This was the worst book, from a delivery perspective, that I have ever heard. Some chapters sound like they were recorded in a bathroom and were barely understandable. Many unedited mistakes.

Any additional comments?

Way too many sexual references that added nothing to the story.

worst narrator ever!

Any additional comments?

Couldn't listen to it. Tried for a while but gave up. Audio was terrible and the narrator read the words not the book.

Could not listen to it....

What would have made Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival better?

What a failure. I hear this book has a great storyline but I can not really tell you my opinion. I tried 3 times to endure the first hour of this book but the quality and performance of the narrator sounds like a 3rd grader recorded it on their Hello Kitty cassette deck. I mean it is really THAT bad. A have a friend that is a striving novelist and he has recorded his own audio narration. He deserves an Oscar if this was the baseline.
After about 40 audiobooks through audible I'm going to have to look into the "return" process on this one. I really want to read the book as I loved Rawles' Patriots and One Second After. I guess I'll have to pick up the print version.

Would you be willing to try another one of D. Allen’s performances?

NO

Worst Audio of any audio book I've ever heard

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Nobody could enjoy this audio, the quality is soo terrible.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I will think hard about another one of these books

What didn’t you like about D. Allen’s performance?

sounded like it was recorded on a tape recorder placed at the other side of the room. His performance was not fluid, not directed, just read in a monotone format without character differentiation. Punctuation and cadence was way off, so hard to listen too.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Story content was decent if you can make it through the audio.

Any additional comments?

This should be pulled from the store and refunds given or newly narrated version given as a replacement asap. The narration was at the level of a 3rd grader, produced on $.99 equipment from 1970, then run over by a truck and set on fire, its honestly that bad.

Read the Reviews !!!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Nobody that appreciates Audiobooks

Has Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival turned you off from other books in this genre?

Not from the genre; but I ap happy to see only this book by the narrator

What didn’t you like about D. Allen’s performance?

In ,my opinion this was the worst narrator I have ever come across. Not helped by the horrendous sound quality. In essence teh sound quality should have been reviewed by Audible and as a product in their store; should never have been released

What character would you cut from Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival?

Could not finish the book

Any additional comments?

Read the reviews regarding the sound quality and the narrator and believe them...

A painful listen

What disappointed you about Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival?

I would not be surprised to find that the author read this book in his garage. It sounds like he is sitting in an enclosed space with echos being heard constantly. Many times it sounds like he is moving a chair across a cement floor. There are several instances where the reader makes up words and constantly repeats sentences. NEVER get the book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Joe Nobody again?

NEVER, NO, TOO PAINFUL

Would you be willing to try another one of D. Allen’s performances?

NO

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival?

I would spend a few bucks and get a real narrator to read in a real studio.

Sounds like it was recorded on a laptop

I wish I had listened to the sample of this book as it sounds like it was recorded on a laptop, terrible quality I couldn't listen to more than 5 minutes of this. Save yourself the trouble and buy the book.

A good story, just get past the terrible recording

Would you try another book written by Joe Nobody or narrated by D. Allen?

yes, bought/downloaded the other 4 books in the series, which all have a much much much better standard of recording and narration

What other book might you compare Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival to, and why?

Surviviors - James Wesley, Rawles
The Survivalist Series - A. American
The Remaining - D. J. Molles

Would you be willing to try another one of D. Allen’s performances?

depends on the book, not the narrator

Was Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival worth the listening time?

yes, enjoyed the series

Any additional comments?

give the first book in the series a chance, the recording is terrible quality (seriously - its terrible and sounds like its been chopped and pasted together from different recording sessions) and the narration is not the best (its clearly not the narrators 'day job'), but the story is good, and hooks you in. The other 4 books in the series (so far) are all recorded/narrated at a much better quality.

If i was the author/publisher, i would seriously think about getting this book (book 1 of the series) rerecorded, as it probably puts a lot of listeners off.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Holding Their Own: A Story of Survival?
