When you're the best at what you do, it's not always easy to walk away. Nathan McBride was retired. The trained Marine sniper and covert CIA operative had put the violence of his former life behind him. But not anymore. A deep-cover FBI agent has disappeared along with one ton of powerful Semtex explosive, enough to unleash a disaster of international proportions.
The U.S. government has no choice but to coax Nathan out of retirement. He's the only man with the skills necessary to get the job done. But almost as soon as Nathan reluctantly accepts the assignment, he finds himself caught in the middle. On the one side is a ruthless adversary with a blood-chilling plan - and on the other are agents who will stop at nothing to see their own brand of justice done.

Money, guns, semtex--tons of it-- greed, corruption, family issues, lots of bodies, all here. I don't know if things actually would work out this way or not, with the FBI allowing former spec-ops snipers to take the lead on the biggest case in the nation at the time, but my ignorance allows me to just enjoy it. And these bad guys are seriously bad. They don't even have religion as a motivator. There is far more going on in the plot than just the good guys hunting the bad guys before they get killed first (cue the title) which makes you shake your head at politicians. I loved this book.
It must be a thing-this Latino side-kick pair. Jack Ryan has one.
The narrator is fantastic. His best voices are the inbred bad guys and Harv, although the other men are great too. His women are a little off, but oh well. The funny thing is, the narrator has this annoying habit of speaking till he has to squeeze out the air in his lungs to finish the sentence. It is so annoying I wanted to give him one star, but his performance of the men's voices, the screaming and crying under torture, the anguish of losing a loved one, are just superb.
These guys are far more likable than Victor the Assassin. They remind me a bit of The Gray Man, Will Robie, and Robin Monarch. All guys I would like around in times of trouble. The stories in this series are blunt, but excellent.
Good guys with dark pasts who merit our respect
