Story
This is the new America. The lights are out, the grid is fried, and war between two monstrous armies is breaking out all along the coastal states. Logan, Skylar, and Harper thought they were prepared. They thought time was on their side. They even thought they were tough enough to survive, a notion they’re about to put to the test.... The Dark Days series puts ordinary citizens on the front lines of a domestic conflict that was never supposed to happen, one that will either unify the country or break her for good.

Publisher's Summary
People started getting sick...
When the pandemic hit, nobody was expecting it to be as bad as it was. The economy barely survived the lockdowns, but it staggered along until civil unrest shattered people’s hope of better times to come. With it being an election year, more and more Americans were waking up to the idea that they truly were behind the curve. The hope was if they did not get sick, run out of money, or could avoid violent mobs, they would be fine. The collapse happened so gradually, nobody saw it coming...but the very few.
Lifelong friends...
Three doctors, a realtor, a contractor, and a pro shooter/model, make up the couples who had been lifelong friends and pooled their money to prepare for hard times. They soon find out money cannot buy you everything, even safety and security.
A jealous rancher wants to buy their land and does not want to take “no” for an answer. More than once, Lyle and his family are found on the wrong side of the fence. With human remains found on the new property, the mystery deepens, as the world around them slowly descends into chaos.

Can’t wait for Book 2
Boyd has written a series that timely and relevant. The characters are believable and storyline is solid. He quickly develops the characters and keeps the story moving. For the readers of Boyd’s other works yes there are a few “chuffs” in here. Kevin Pierce does his typical amazing job of bringing the characters off the paper. Ready for book two would preorder if I could now.

Great idea, too crude.
I haven't made it all the way through and am not sure I will. The language starts off being occasional but gets more and more frequent with heavier foul language and crude sexual humor. Other reviews had mentioned how much Christianity was in the book but if it comes up later it's pretty disappointing that a Christian would feel the need to inject so much crudeness.

So Good, so plausible, so relevant!
This story could be true. Infact. each plot point did happen in our America over the past year. Only to different folks; in different cities and towns. I was subject to mob rage and attacked in my suv, like the character in the book, this summer in Philadelphia. Like her, I was minding my business, and got my vehicle surrounded, jumped on, windows smashed, with bricks, ball bats, and rocks. In the end, I was ok, I forced my way out and my vehicle wasn't breached. But the city cops harassed me about my hand gun (even though I have had a carry permit for 30 years; and didn't brandish it, or fire a shot). Their first questions from them were if I was carrying that day; which I found both annoying and alarming. After that I had me attorney present for all calls and my statement. Not one of the mob has been questioned or arrested yet, to my knowledge. Despite front and rear view video and cellphone footage of the event.... It sucks that prepper fiction is becoming current events. Let's hope for peace, keep our powder dry, and "Embrace the suck!" Great book, great performance, unfortunately, almost not fiction.
