From the Amazon best-selling author of Dark Diary and the Fluorescence series comes a mesmerizing standalone tale. Magic. Destiny. Friendship. Fates Aflame is a breathtaking journey through a vast new world in the tradition of epics like
"Sparks of golden light grew within my hands, fringed with vivid blue heat. Stems of fire manifested, licking at my fingertips, flickering and fighting to stay aglow amidst the pouring rain. Amber coils wove together, and from those struggling flames bloomed an effervescent rose. The petals unfurled and tumbled open gracefully, brought to life by pulsating swirls of orange and red.
In a society secretly fueled by unbridled magic, an ever-changing landscape of politics and formalities tugged the threads of my fate in all directions, shrouding the future in uncertainty.
My hands squeezed closed and the rose evaporated into smoke.
Earth has chosen me as its Guardian, and I have no choice but to assume the role. In the blink of an eye, a once carefree life faded from sight, like the blazing rose within my damp fingers."
Earth granted her the ability to conjure fire at will, but the birth of her powers awakens a curse and a perilous trial unfolds, putting the lives of those she loves in jeopardy. When extinct beasts brought forth by ancient magic threaten her life, she has no choice but to take a stand....
Fates Aflame is a standalone book, but you may continue the adventures in the upcoming book II.
First off, I suppose I should start by admitting that pretty much as soon as I finished listening to this audiobook... I started it over and listened to it all a second time. I will often get to the end of a particularly good book and not want to start something new because I like to let it sit for a bit. But it's pretty rare that I will just instantly start reading it because I enjoyed it so much. And that's what this book did for me.
I have always been a fan of character driven works, and Fates Aflame did not disappoint. Each of the characters had fun, believable personalities and they were an absolute joy to get to know better as the story progressed. The interactions were great and I really look forward to getting to know them better in the upcoming sequel!
The story was a lot of fun and held a lot of elements that I always enjoy. The romance plot was sweet and not rushed. The feelings budding over time as they grew to know each other better-- instead of being a sudden 'love at first sight' kind of thing. I find this style much more realistic and wonderful to read because you get to watch the emotions grow and blossom.
And then, of course, there's all of the mythological and folklore elements that are involved in the main plot of the story. Fantasy has always been my go to genre and this book does not disappoint where that is concerned. The lore felt to me that it was a wonderful mix of well-researched and personally created, the two aspects melding together into a riveting world history and legends for the setting. And even the more familiar creatures that you might run into have their own unique flavor that helps them stand apart-- like the unicorn, Malachite's vivid coloring and the Firagia the dragon's wings being literally made of flame.
Overall, I loved this book. I can't wait for the story to continue moving forward and show us even more of the fantastical world that the author has created.

Fates Aflame spent a lot of the early part of the book setting up the relationships between the characters and introducing you to this original sci-fi world. It was a little bit of a slow start, but well worth sticking with it. You get to know and understand the characters so you are really attached to them when the action starts. I have to say, I really enjoyed the flashback sequence, and it was especially good with the performance that the narrator brought to that scene.
Now to the really good stuff. This book has great fantasy action sequences that should appeal to fans of not only fantasy, but video games, and anime.
Not only are there classic mythological creatures, but plenty of new creatures that are well thought out and described in detail. The author has created a wonderful, original world. This book had it all; hidden lands, lost cities, elemental powers, magical swords, sci-fi weapons, and spacecraft. The action scenes were really well done, and brought to life with a great reading by the author. Overall, an enjoyable story, that was well written. I'll be eagerly awaiting the next one in the series.
