Publisher's Summary

Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses. Raised among the Wardens - a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe - Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most.

Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever. Then she meets Roth - a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to - especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul. But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne...it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

White Hot Kiss

I have read this series back in 2014, I thought I reviewed it but I guess I didn’t so I am rectifying that now.

I loved these books then and I like them now. I do love to revisit a series that I can’t remember much but a few key things because it feels like your reading it all again for the first time.

Layla is probably a favorite character of mine. She is dealt with this cruddy hand but she worked to see the good in it. She doesn’t belong but she tries so hard. You really can’t fault the girl for feeling that way either because the Warden’s most of them don’t treat her like one of them and yeah ok she isn’t but she is too.

Zayne, ooh this boy, I want to shake him. If he truly has the feels for our girl Layla then why does he make her feel bad about herself? I mean he tries I will give him that.

And Roth oh boy do I like a “bad boy” but what I loved the most was how he made Layla feel. That she wasn’t wrong for what she felt. He steers her in the right direction for the most part. (haha ;) )
But he is looking out FOR HER, and I think or I should say I wished Zayne was like that sometimes I think he does but I also think his father gets in his head and he doesn’t speak for himself. That is truly sad.
I can’t wait to see where the series will take us, I love the good/bad theme going on it makes for an interesting listen.

I looooove Saskia’s narration she gives voices to characters in a way that isn’t hokey and you can distinguish who is speaking. I wish more narrators did this but with the experience to know when too much is too much.

Very good story with inconsistant vocals

Where does White Hot Kiss rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Somewhere in the middle of the pack

What was one of the most memorable moments of White Hot Kiss?

Roth's sacrifice out of love

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

mostly

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Most of the time, the lines are blurred.

Any additional comments?

In the case of The Dark Elements, narrator Saskia Maarleveld has a bit of trouble keeping the character voices defined.

For example, Roth has a mostly normal voice, but the essence of the voice changes unexpectedly. Whether growling, or whispering, the voice should be recognizable as his. The same problem exists with the voice of Zane. While I realize that an individual's voice sometimes changes in modulation, the tone of the voice used should still sound like the same character.

This is a problem throughout the book, and it effects all the male voices. For the most part, she does an excellent job with the female voices, and I have to say that all of the male voices do sound decidedly male. If she works a bit more, focusing on consistency for each characters voice, she has the potential to become very good.

Armentrout never disappoints! Can't wait to start Stone Cold Touch! The narrator gave each voice a distinction. Love her too!

Jennifer Armentrout never ceases to amaze me!

Would you listen to White Hot Kiss again? Why?

No, only because I don't prefer to relisten to anything. Once is always enough for me.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Roth was my favorite b/c he was this strong bad boy who really did have a good heart underneath all the demon.

What does Saskia Maarleveld bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She really brings the characters to life with a great sense of who they are just through her voice. Excellent narrator.

MUCH better than expected

The narrator was excellent in keeping my attention and speaking for several characters. The story line was VERY interesting about Demons & Wardons(Gargoyles). I loved this story because the main characters grew throughout the story and evolved with the growth of the story line. I have to say though I did cry my eyes out with something that happened in the story - but at least I know it may not be hopeless for what and who I am sad about///this was a great escape and 5 stars for Jennifer the author and the Narrator who read the story!

Better Than Twilight

It’s been along time since I was a 17-year-old, but I really enjoyed this audiobook. I’ve read a lot of Jennifers books, and I’ve enjoyed almost everyone of them. It was nice to read one about innocent love.

This book had the same type of love triangle as the Twilight series, but I actually liked this one better. The female character, Layla, wasn’t annoying like Bella in the Twilight books. It was hard to choose from Team Roth to Team Layne because they both had qualities that made them irresistible.

This is the first time i listened to an audiobook narrated by Saskia. She was incredible. She had so many different voices, including a lot of male voices, which were not annoying at all. I could actually picture the characters really speaking that way.

I would totally recommend this book to anyone of all ages.

Another gem from Armentrout

After reading both the Lux and Covenant series, I was curious what else Jennifer has up her sleeve and the first book of the Dark Elements didn't disappoint. More moderate than the above two, slower to unfold but also more complicated and smarter in some sense. The characters are great as always, the loveable villain can be another addition to the Best Book Boyfriends list, and the narrator is fantastic. J.L.A. Just knows how to write paranormal YA romance - looking forward to the next book in this series!
