Publisher's Summary

They are the fatemarked. Misunderstood. Worshipped. Hated. Murdered at birth. Their time to step into the light has come.

An ancient prophecy foretold their coming, the chosen few who will bring peace to a land embroiled in a century of mistrust and war. When kings start dying, that hope and belief swiftly turns to fear. Roan Loren is one of the fatemarked, but has hidden his mark of power his entire life, fearing the damage it might cause to those around him.

A great evil is coming. He can't hide anymore.

In the spirit of fantasy epics like Throne of Glass and The Lord of the Rings, enter a world of magic and dragons, kings and queens, and victory and defeat, during a time when honor and valor still meant something.

Incredible epic high fantasy!!

When I first heard that David Estes was writing a new high fantasy series, I was thrilled because I knew he was a huge Lord of the Rings fan, as am I! I loved his sci-fi series, Slip, and his dystopian series, the Dwellers and Country saga so I knew a fantasy from him would be nothing short of amazing!

And wow!! Yes! The Fatemarked Epic series is his best work to date!! In book 1, Fatemarked, we are introduced to the land of the Four Kingdoms and the Kings and Queens and princesses and princes. We also meet several of the Fatemarked, those with marks on their skin who have special powers, for good or bad, light or dark...

And yes, there be dragons!! There is ancient prophecy, and knights, and sword fights, and jousting. And so much action!!

We meet Roan, one of the Fatemarked, along with one of my favorite heroines, Annise! These two are my favorites, but the cast of Fatemarked is huge and I had so many other characters that I was rooting for, like the snarky Prince Gareth, Gwendolyn, Rhea, Arch, the Armored Knight, Grease, and so many others!!! Even Bane! David has a way of making his characters flawed but very human, and very relatable. No one is perfect in the Four Kingdoms.

The world building is incredible and definitely epic! I loved going back and forth to the map in the Kindle edition to track each character's journey.

And the writing!! The writing is astounding and David has completely surpassed himself with this series! I couldn't wait to do a re-read by audiobook, and Derek Perkins as narrator surpassed all my expectations! He was brilliant and perfect for this series. I just downloaded Truthmarked on audio and I'm looking forward to continuing my Fatemarked audiobook experience.

Not much happens...

I did enjoy the book, but the story would have benefited from fewer characters and a stream lined plot.

The author did not seem to know if he wanted to focus upon the characters or the world changing events happening around the characters.

This resulted in what, I believe, to be a detraction from the story.

The reviews made me hopeful- the story fell flat

Not until the postludes did I feel anything for these characters. The story was not gripping and if not for the excellent performance of the reader I wouldn’t of made it through. You fooled me again Audible.

millennial mentality

A cowardly bisexual healer, a self loathing obese princess, a queen so fragile that a scar on her face drives her insane ; A cast of characters living with an army of guilt, none of which is their own. This was both the 1st and the last book of this series that I'll read,

Starts off strong but goes downhill

I like this type of story, young characters that grow and become great warriors. However, this story starts out in this direction, and goes downhill and then picks up speed to level out to a repetitive storyline. The use of the phrases, his heart skips a beat, blood ran cold, truth died on his lips..... I get it. I listened for 10 hours of this book, and then switched to music. This book could have been cut in half by just stop repeating the same old self loathing quotes. Very disappointed.

A fantasy world that totally draws you in !

David Estes has created well developed characters in multiple story lines with good dialogue expertly delivered by Derek Perkins. I return many fantasy books because I'm tired of the single dimensional characters with predictable plots. For me this 1rst volume delivered on the story, the prose and the narration. I will be purchasing the rest of the series. Great job.

Any additional comments?

I almost never quit a book but this book I could only make it to the 50% point before I gave up. I wish I could have a refund.

Okay but nothing new here.

I tried to get all the way through the book but in the end, the characters didn't pull me in. The world wasn't unique, the story all that compelling or complex, and I never felt like I couldn't stop listening. It almost felt like a chore. If you don't mind simple structure and little complexity you'll probably like it. If you are into books like Wise Man's Fear or Eye of the World it will likely not slate your reading bug.

Great read!

This is the first fantasy book I have read outside of JR Tolkien's works and I loved it! Very entertaining and character rich. Looking forward to delving into the next book.
