Story
I was born when the world was a glorious place, but my parents were betrayed and murdered. I was raised by my sister in fear and poverty instead. That was merely the beginning. I lived through untold death and destruction when the old world was shattered, when creations turned against creators and a new evil rose to assert power. I fought back against the new order and broke humankind free from the shackles of terror that enslaved them. I discovered secrets beyond the lore of all other sorcerers, knowledge that ensures my people will not lack a shepherd on their long march through eternity.

Outcast and exiled, the demon Tarrik Nal-Valim has long been forgotten by the world of humans. At least, so he thinks. But when he is summoned as a last resort by a desperate sorcerer, it seems as though his past has caught up with him. The sorcerer is Serenity “Ren” Branwen, the daughter of Tarrik’s former master - and friend. Though she seems cold, driven, and ruthless, Tarrik can tell Ren has her back against a wall, and he is compelled by ferocious powers to obey her.

The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Publisher's summary
A fast-paced fantasy prequel in the world of the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence, whose gripping conclusion, A Shattered Empire, released September 13th, 2016.
Ten years before A Crucible of Souls...
In the bustling capital city of the Mahruse Empire, Felicienne Shyrise spends her days as a talented investigator, taking on stolen goods and missing person cases and the occasional murder the city guard are too incompetent - or too lazy - to resolve.
During the nights she hones her skills playing Dominion, a board game almost as complicated as life itself. She dreams of making a name for herself and becoming the richest woman in the Empire.
But when she's roped into a murky investigation by a First Adjudicator to the immortal Emperor himself, her life is thrown into disarray. Will this be the perfect opportunity to showcase her skills and make valuable connections, or will her future now be in the hands of political powers that can never be denied?
Working against her will, and afraid of the consequences of refusing the commission, she uncovers evidence that points to an attempt on the Emperor's life. Felicienne rapidly finds herself a target and must use her considerable wits to uncover the plot of an unseen enemy who always seems to be one step ahead of the game.

I fought back against the new order and broke humankind free from the shackles of terror that enslaved them. Enjoyable Overall.
The characters were enjoyable and the storyline entertaining. I would have to say the greatest disappointment being the predictability of the identity of the antagonist, while the protagonist couldn't figure it out. Overall it was enjoyable, though.

Did Not Disappoint!
The narrator did a great job. The world building was great and now I have a dozen questions. The story was amazing and gave me so much more than I expected from a prequel.
I definitely recommend this book. And now I'm off to listen to book 1...!

Start with Book number 1
I started the series here and it would have been better if I'd listened to book 1 first so I understood more of what was going on

took awhile, but
I really got into it towards the end and then was bummed it was over. It was just a prequel, so it may be bedt for those familiar with the series already.
The narrator was really good and did a surprisingly good female voice.
I will definitely check out the next book in the series

Worth It
This is a good prequel to an enjoyable series.
Oliver Wyman's performance is as amazing as usual! Wyman always elevates every book he performs with his limitless talent.

an interesting story
it was a good introduction to the series, I liked that it was entertaining and deep in some manners, it was pretty cool actually.
the story was pretty well done, a little politic warfare here, death, intrigue and interesting heroes and heroines all well packed in a fantasy action based world.

I'm in love with this character
OK I am ready for trilogy prequel. I am absorbed with Felis and her team. I'm in love with her work, ambition and morals. The writing is observant and thrilling. I'll take 3rds..
