Publisher's summary

Set in the world of the New York Times best-selling Seven Realms series, a generation later, this is a breathtaking story of dark magic, chilling threats, and two unforgettable characters walking a knife-sharp line between life and death. This dazzling beginning to a new series is indispensable for fans of Cinda Williams Chima and a perfect starting point for listeners who are new to her work.

Adrian sul'Han, known as Ash, is a trained healer with a powerful gift of magic - and a thirst for revenge. Ash is forced into hiding after a series of murders throws the queendom into chaos. Now he's closer than ever to killing the man responsible, the cruel king of Arden. With time running out, Ash faces an excruciating choice: Can he use his powers not to save a life but to take it?

Abandoned at birth, Jenna Bandelow was told that the magemark on the back of her neck would make her a target. But when the King's Guard launches a relentless search for a girl with a mark like hers, Jenna assumes that it has more to do with her role as a saboteur than any birth-based curse. Though Jenna doesn't know why she's being hunted, she knows that she can't get caught.

Eventually Ash's and Jenna's paths will collide in Arden. Thrown together by chance and joined by their hatred of the ruthless king, they will come to rescue each other in ways they cannot yet imagine.

an ironic find

I was going through
my library and thought - hey, the seven reaLms saga was a great series and I wish there was more. then I went to chima's site and found out a sequel came out only the day before.

I don't normally like it when new characters take over; but this was great. the mc is the son of the previous mc's and it would be hard to explain the story without giving much away. so I will say that the style remains true to the previous books air and the narrator - actually I had a hard time believing she wasn't Carol Monda. she did every bit as great a job.

Great sequel to the seven realms novels

A great sequel. I didn't expect the book to carry its own when sequels come out you think it will never be as good as the original, but I surpassed all expectations and holds it own along with weaving the story we fell in love with in to its own captivating story.

accents are offensively bad

if you are going to attempt an English accent my dear, you had better take accent coaching first

killing too many main characters.

I can't continue to return to this Saga only to find out that the old people are being killed off only to rewrite the same story so that the new people can be killed off for the next generation

Insta romance just add water?

Not a great book, I had such high hopes. Without giving away too much what caused this book to fail for me were two things.
1. The instant romance between the main characters, it was so sudden I went back and re-listened to the lead up chapters to see if I missed the chemistry, the build up,i hadn't missed anything. It had happened without chemistry,or build up.
2. The secondary characters had much better back stories and more interesting personalities than the main characters.

So read at your own risk.

Good story, terrible narration

I don’t know if it’s intentional or not but it’s like the narrator is baby talking in a whisper. Like my mom talks to her dog and infants. After just a few minutes it was unbearable.

Rushed Romance

This series seems a lot more fast paced than the one that preceded it. Which is fine but the romantic sub plot pretty much poofed into existence for (probably) later convince. Only other hang up is this author now has 3 different versions of poker face. I always wondered why she had two in the last series and now she has another 😂. Otherwise this book had lovely surprises and is well written.

Worthwhile Somewhat

Too much okay story & i never really felt for the 2 main characters. Their is some action, drama & with very little magic. Most of it is sad story, that is to drawn out.. The setting is a midievel world with some magic.

Performance is well done, with many different voices & accents.

Always great story from Cinda

i had hard time at first. As it felt there was such a huge gap in time from the previous series events. Not only that but if you just finished the previous series then the loss of a character at beginning will destroy you. But thats what stories do, they insite feelings. Cinda always draws me in and I truly enjoy the story throughout. this will be another great series.
