Publisher's summary

Of the five contenders for power, one is dead, another in disfavor, and still the wars rage as violently as ever, as alliances are made and broken. Joffrey, of House Lannister, sits on the Iron Throne, the uneasy ruler of the land of the Seven Kingdoms. His most bitter rival, Lord Stannis, stands defeated and disgraced, the victim of the jealous sorceress who holds him in her evil thrall. But young Robb, of House Stark, still rules the North from the fortress of Riverrun. Robb plots against his despised Lannister enemies, even as they hold his sister hostage at King's Landing, the seat of the Iron Throne. Meanwhile, making her way across a blood-drenched continent is the exiled queen, Daenerys, mistress of the only three dragons still left in the world....

But as opposing forces maneuver for the final titanic showdown, an army of barbaric wildlings arrives from the outermost line of civilization. In their vanguard is a horde of mythical Others, a supernatural army of the living dead whose animated corpses are unstoppable. As the future of the land hangs in the balance, no one will rest until the Seven Kingdoms have exploded in a veritable storm of swords....

must read.

I enjoy the little snippets and off-shoots that never made it to the shows. one of a great many novels that prove that the book can always be a little more enticing and sometimes far better than television

I love the Game of Thrones

What made the experience of listening to A Storm of Swords the most enjoyable?

The narration makes you feel like you are watching a movie in your head.

What did you like best about this story?

This is Book 4, so it's a continuaton.

Have you listened to any of Roy Dotrice’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes - he pronounces some words differently and the voices he uses are a bit different for some characters, like Cierce, but he's great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, except that it's very complicated and over 40 hours!

Any additional comments?

Dotrice is a great choice for this book. I'd love to hear him narrate the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy!

Greatest series I've ever read.

It is so easy to get lost in the wonder of this world that JRRM has created; read these books, they're life changing.

The best of the original books

Where does A Storm of Swords rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

A Storm of Swords is by far the longest and the most in-depth of the Song of Ice and Fire canon. It marries the political intrigue of A Game of Thrones with the battlefields of A Clash of Kings and gives the listener everything he or she wants from this epic of a Medieval parallel Earth. Roy Dotrice is in fine form and narrates the story as only a well-trained actor can. As I undertook the following audiobooks in the series, it became clear that criticisms of Mr. Dotrice are accurate in that his performance after A Storm of Swords was inconsistent at best. However, his handling of George R.R. Martin's third epic is nothing short of brilliant. If only I could have listened to this book all at once! Though it's length prevented that, it still got me hooked and I found myself tuning in every spare moment I had.

Brutal in Places but sweeping and compelling.

Never boring. The characters were well developed, a tiny spark of decency in some of the monsters, and a little darkness even in the heros. This is an epic high adventure full of darkness, light, and a thread of magic.
