Publisher's Summary

The complete, unabridged audiobook of A Game of Thrones.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Game of Thrones is the first volume in the series.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

As Warden of the north, Lord Eddard Stark counts it a curse when King Robert bestows on him the office of the Hand. His honour weighs him down at court where a true man does what he will, not what he must...and a dead enemy is a thing of beauty.

The old gods have no power in the south, Stark’s family is split and there is treachery at court. Worse, the vengeance-mad heir of the deposed Dragon King has grown to maturity in exile in the Free Cities. He claims the Iron Throne.

What the Critics Say

"A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." (SFX)

"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads… Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)

    "A Great Listen"

Having already read all the books I can say that this is a definitely worth listening too. Nothing is taken away from the original thrill. The story is so detailed and complex. It's a pleasure to finally listen to a story where actual effort and thought was put into creating it. The narrator Roy Doltrice does a marvellous job considering there's so many different characters to voice. I can't do it in my head without getting mixed up.

    "Respect for the writer"

I have never been massively into fantasy but I downloaded this book because it had very good reviews.

Having listened to it, I'm in awe of the hugely intricate plot and the detail that's gone into planning all the hundreds of characters.

Because of this, it was sometimes a little confusing at times and I had to rewind a few times and Google some of the characters just to keep us.

I thought this was really well narrated as well although some of the accents would not have been what I would have expected- no doubt done to try to distinguish between the endless list of characters.

I was not aware that this is only the first part of a (7?) part series, so it will take a long time to get through the whole thing. I did consider just watching it on DVD instead but having looked up some of the scenes on YouTube I felt that the book is so much better.

    "A Game of Thrones"

Absolutely brilliant, what can I say? I have avoided these books for many years. ..a big Tolkien fan, I felt that George R R Martin had taken the mickey and was a pale pastiche of the master. My children finally persuaded me to watch the TV series and I found that Martin's work stands on its own. I decided to buy the audio books and find that they are even better than the TV series.. Roy Dotrice does more than justice to the complex cast of characters which make up this masterwork. Not a pastiche of Tolkien but perhaps a successor?
