Publisher's Summary

FBI agents Jessica Harlow and John Shepherd have a past. The former lawyer and cocky Army Ranger clashed during their training at Quantico and gladly went their separate ways after graduating from the Academy. Six years later, the last thing either of them expects is to be assigned to work as partners in a high-profile undercover sting.

For both of them, being paired with a former rival couldn't come at a worse time. Recently divorced from a Hollywood producer and looking for a fresh start, Jessica is eager to prove herself at her new field office. And John is just one case away from his dream assignment to the FBI's elite Hostage Rescue Team.

In order to nail a corrupt Florida politician, they'll have to find a way to work together - a task that becomes even trickier when they're forced to hole up at a romantic beachfront resort as part of the investigation. Suddenly, the heat behind their nonstop sparring threatens to make the job a whole lot more complicated.

Light and Fun Reading

Any additional comments?

This story was light and romantic. A bit different from some of her other stories and while these types aren't meant for everyone, that's ok. They are meant to be taken lightly. There are important issues in a lot of these stories though, don't get me wrong. You just have to remember not to get too hung up by little details like instant love, etc. These stories are meant to take you away to different worlds, make you feel good, not think about your problems for awhile. If you want some humor, romance, wit and handsome men, read Julie James. :).

About Time!

I have waited for this book so long it seems! I love it. It is reminiscent of the earlierJulie James books minus the last two:(
She is back: in plot, in sas, in strong protagonists, and in impeccable story telling.
Coupled with Karen White's narration, it is a stay-up-all-night-listening, ears ringing, but oh, so worth it!
Thank you Julie!

The Thing About Love

This book is going to have to be listened to again and again. It is one of my favorites. The last chapter alone had me spellbound. I was listening in the car until the climax of the undercover operation. I am so glad there was no distraction in listening to the best part. The book is well written. The narration was perfectly paced from beginning to end. I was made to fell I was part of the story. I just wish the book was longer. I just finished and already I miss Jessica and John.

Combatable Love

Nothing more fun and sexy than two people who are in competition with each other. After 6years,John and Jessica happen apron each other again, this time as partners for the FBI,the sexual tension is thick and misunderstood for something else.Things start to become clearer though the more time the two are together”under cover “.With a little bit of competition, comes with a lot of sexual tension and then finally...combustion and love.Great narration and awesome love story, very sexy.

Fantastic!

OMG, absolutely loved. Julie James hasn't written anything I haven't liked, but this one? Blew all of the others out of the water! The dynamic between Jessica and John was fantastic, whether they were in their earlier antagonistic phase (or was it antagonistic? Poor John, LOL) or their reluctant let's-make-the-best-of-this-op phase, or their OMG these two are setting the pages on fire phase, they are absolutely fantastic together. If you like romantic suspense that's high on the romance and snark and does a decent job with the suspense, you can't go wrong with Julie James!

(I got a NetGalley copy, but actually listened to the audio from Audible because I love the narrator. She does a fantastic job every time--definitely worth the expense!)

"Bad Ass On Resume"

If you could sum up The Thing About Love in three words, what would they be?

Fun, Great Dialogue
Note: I do use new 1.25x speed to match the author's intent.
These are feel good stories that make you smile and laugh. All of the heroines are smart and have great dialogue. Ms James can make our heroes so sexy in just a few words that you fall in love with them all.
Note: Nick McCall is from A Lot Like Love

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Thing About Love?

when hero apologizes, this is one of the major differences in this series, which only gets better and better.

What about Karen White’s performance did you like?

I am now a huge fan of Ms White since first hearing About That Night, (don't start with that one). I listened to A Lot Like Love, and still really didn't get the FULL joy of Ms White's male voice, but boy by Love Irresistibly, I got it and now have over 50 of her reads. I own all of this series, then went on to Jill Shalvis animal series, a MUST!
I have gone back to A Lot Like Love to really appreciate her voice range.
My fave is still Love Irresistible, (Jack's minor roll)

Any additional comments?

When you listen to Love Irresistibly, a lot of the characters are in this book, so when you read Suddenly One Summer, they all make sense.
Ms James writes about 1 book a year, but they are worth it. Don't start the listen unless you are prepared to really enjoy a good story.

I’ve loved most of Julie James’ books.

But this was below average for her.

There was not enough current day story. It’s too much talking about things that happened in the past. There is a lot of recalling how the couple met six years earlier – their interactions and conflicts at that time.

I also felt like the author asked FBI agents about their personal experiences. Then she just put all those stories in this book – especially things that happened in training sessions.

The main current day story is Jessica and John going undercover pretending to be restaurant developers who bribe a mayor to get zoning permits. But that was a very small part of the book. There is a second undercover story about Jessica pretending to be a drunk battered woman calling the cops for help. Shortly after the bad cop arrives, the scene ends. We don’t get to see Jessica’s interaction with the cop and what she and he say and do. The author skips that and just tells us the bad cop was arrested. I was annoyed with that omission.

I was glad I bought the audiobook and not the paperback. I might have lost interest in the paperback and skimmed or skipped parts. With the audiobook I could do other things while I listened.

AUDIOBOOK NARRATOR:
In the beginning of the book I did not like the narrator Karen White. I felt like she was fast reading and not acting/narrating. Also her voice has a harshness. I prefer softer voices. But by the end of the book I was more used to it and less annoyed. I was pleased that her breath noises were removed.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 368 pages. Swearing language: s*** once or twice. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: about 3. Setting: current day mostly Chicago, Illinois and Quantico, Virginia. Book copyright: 2017. Genre: contemporary romance.
