Publisher's summary

Dear Listener,

Cate Madigan isn't asking for trouble. Her wacky Irish family is constantly playing matchmaker for her with men who leave much to be desired. All she wants is peace and quiet and a nice place to live while she saves her money from tending bar in a lively Boston pub. Okay, so what if her roommate is a cross-dressing lounge singer named Marty Longfellow? In exchange for cheap rent, all she has to do is take care of his plants and collect his mail when he's out of town. And then...Marty disappears.

At the same time, a bullmastiff named Beast shows up with instructions from Marty to take care of him. Can Cate handle this 120-pound bundle of joy who wants to devour everything in sight?

Ex-cop Kellen McBride has decided to make Cate's bar his nightly hang-out. But is he just there for the beer? Or does he have an ulterior motive for getting close to Cate? When Cate comes home to a ransacked apartment, she realizes Kellen knows more than he's saying. Problem is, he's turning up the heat in her life - in more ways than one.

Soon Cate finds herself in deep trouble with mysterious stalkers, a lovesick would-be boyfriend named Patrick Pugg, two friends who are looking for love, and the very sexy, possibly dangerous Kellen McBride. The south side of Boston has never been wilder.

Happy Listening!
Janet and Leanne

Critic reviews

"Like other Evanovich novels, there's a madcap race to the finish while mysteries are solved and hearts are stolen; also like other Evanovich novels, it makes a highly satisfying read." ( Publishers Weekly)
"King pushes the fast action with impeccable professionalism, making each member of a large cast of characters distinctive, colorful, often hilarious, sexy, and romantic." ( AudioFile)

Same formula, different narrator, so much better

Evanovich's books have a certain formula. There's an earnest, but danger prone working class gal. There's an over protective, sexy, slightly dangerous guy. There's a sidekick pet with a monosyllable name (Rex, Bob, Beast), often a dog. There's a pip of a senior lady, often with a gun in her purse.

Sometimes the formula works, sometimes it crashes and burns. And sometimes the narrator makes all the difference. I loved reading her Stephanie Plum books, but didn't care for the Audible until they had Lorelei King narrating.

Here, the Lorelei King + formula Evanovich combo was buttery popcorn rom-com gold. It was light-hearted, kooky and funny. The smexy was a bit on the tame side, but the characters were great. I especially liked all the side characters, like Pugg (another of the better formula riffs where the female MC is presented with a host of loser would-be dates, similar to the early Stephanie Plum books). I recommend this one far more than Audible's other sale offering from this past week, Evanovich's Rocky Road to Romance, where the same formula crashed and burned with the maximum cringe of the guy being controlling and spoiled.

Seriously funny :)

It's been a while since I've read a book by this author and I forgot how she can make me laugh.

This was a shorter story that is a stand alone and not a part of the Stephanie Plum books. It was read by Lorelei King who is the narrator who also does the Charlie Davidson books so to me - she does a phenomenal job.

The story revolves around the female MC who is bartending while she is trying to finish college. She is renting a room from Marty, who is a very talented drag queen who performs at the bar she works at. Cate finds herself in the middle of a mess when:

1) Marty goes away suddenly
2) She gets a new dog delivered
3) She is being targeted by a man named Pug
And most importantly
4) There is a man at her bar that is making her interested in more than serving him drinks.

As usual, Ms. Evanovich creates a crazy plot that has a ton of laughs while you are trying to figure out what the heck is happening.

I listened to this all on audio and found myself laughing out loud quite often. I am so happy I found it and even went to look to see if there was a book 2 in this series.

Sadly, there is not.

Great story

I loved every minute of this book! As always Janet Evanovich and Leanne Banks co-author great! The story holds your interest all the way through. I feel like I actually know the characters and even caught myself smiling and actually laughing out loud. I love the narrator Lorelei King. I notice she does a lot of narrating for Janet Evanovich. Her voices match the characters perfectly.

Great Read

I enjoyed this a lot. It was funny and had a sweet couple and an interesting plot. I needed something like this to counter some extra stress.

Pretty silly, but a fun read

A novella with a romantic twist, a mystery, stolen jewelry and maybe a murder. Characters were okay and plot pretty simple. The narrator Lorelei King managed to give me listening enjoyment through to the end.

The Dog and the Jewels

What did you love best about Hot Stuff?

I liked the story line and the characters. Funny, serious, hysterical, moving and again funny story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Hot Stuff?

When the dog ate the underwear.

What about Lorelei King’s performance did you like?

I keep saying the same thing when asked this question. Lorelei is a very good reader. She makes you believe the characters. Only in two other series books did I not care for the way a character was portrayed, and that too was eventually changed and the new version is great. She's good at what she does.
