Answer to my prayers!

I was referred to this book by a friend when I was about to throw the towel in on homeschooling. I was frustrated and cried daily. My son was testing me every minute of every day and my children were fighting all the time. This book had me in tears...not sad tears but years of relief! It only took 2 days to get through this wonderful book. In these past 2 days I can see a difference in my household already!!!! Thank God for this book and Mr Dobson!

Very helpful!

The interview with the moms of strong-willed children was very helpful. I've recommended this book to many of my friends. Every child has a strong will in some senses, but some are truly more challenging and Dr. Dobson offers sound advice for us as parents.

This book was TERRIBLE

This was not what I expected at all. I was looking for advice on parenting - not to read that the solution is spanking and laying hands on your child in prayer. I'm Christian and this was way over the top religious for me.

a real disappointment from Dobson.

another preachy sermon that gets real off topic, raising strong willed children, and just wants you to pray. no thanks. I'm in the real world and need real solutions. let me save you the time and money, you are already doing what Dobson may suggest, and he offers no New or Helpful techniques. he mainly wants you to spank, be firm, be loving and then pray and spank some more. That's about it.

Born again christian based

Was disappointed by the born again view point of this book. Especially since it wasn't mentioned in the description or reviews. The introduction tells how the author beat his recalcitrant dachshund with a belt??? Later on a mother tells how she had to discipline her 5 year old daughter by putting her in the garage! Then prays over her every day asking the holy spirit for guidance. Really???

So glad I chose the audio version!

Wonderful book. I chose this audiobook because I was wanted different ideas for raising my daughter. After reading this I felt encouraged and empowered. My favorite chapter was with the live interviews from one of his radio shows. I thoroughly enjoyed that addition.

Avoid

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Christians, with no proclivity for critical thinking.

What could James C. Dobson have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Not written it.

Would you be willing to try another one of John Fuller’s performances?

Yes.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The New Strong-Willed Child?

Most.

Any additional comments?

This is a terrible parenting book. If you have a strong-willed child, listen to this author's advice if you want your kid to get worse. It's premise is that kids want to fight with you. They don't. It's premise is that if you want your kid to behave, beat them, fight them and win, and ignore what they are saying. This is clearly ludicrous. This leads to your kids finding ways to hide what they are doing when they can, and fight with you the rest of the time. The books quotes the bible for parenting advice. The bible is a terrible book for parenting advice. Besides being thousands of years old, it's advice is based on strong-willed authors, that don't listen and can't learn. The author of this book gets defensive at times and says things like "John Locke" had it all wrong. John Locke died over 200 years ago. Are you kidding me? If you want to connect to your kids, ESPECIALLY, your strong-willed kids, try something like "How to Talk so Your Kids Will Listen. . " or "The Whole Brained Child". It is nice to hear the stories in Dobson's book to know I'm not alone in this challenge. It's also nice to know that I'm doing something right, as I'm doing very little of what the author recommends. Save yourself some heartache, read this book only if you want to know how "not" to parent.

TOO RELIGIOUS!!!

I've gotten only through chapter 6. I'm quite upset that I didn't do my homework on this book. I'm very Christian and have strong beliefs, but I don't want to buy a book, that's supposed to help with parenting a strong child, on faith and prayer as a way to help. I pray everyday and go to church, to help us. I don't need a bait-and-switch book. I thought this book was based more on developmental learnings and research, not prayer and bible quoting. I have a defiant child and so far, everything through chapter 6, is only anecdotal. A waste of money and time. Shame on the marketers on selling Christianity, masked behind a book on a very serious matter, when a parent is seeking desperate help!.

Disgusted

It is never ok to hit a child. Was shocked, saddened and disgusted that such a respected author would condone and suggest such things.
