Publisher's summary

During a train trip from Chicago to Texas in the late 1940's, A.W. Tozer began to write The Pursuit of God. He wrote all night, the words coming to him as fast as he could put them down. When the train pulled into McAllen, the rough draft was done. Although written in such a remarkably short period of time, the depth, clarity and completeness of Tozer's message has made The Pursuit of God an enduring favorite.

An Outstanding Book in a Useful Form -Audible vers

Would you listen to Pursuit of God again? Why?

Absolutely. It's precisely because I intend to listen to it over and over again. The insight, passion, and clarity of A.W. Tozer are too often missing in our day. As he says in the book, "Between the scribe who has read and the prophet who has seen there is a difference as wide as the sea. We are today overrun with orthodox scribes, but the prophets, where are they? The hard voice of the scribe sounds over evangelicalism, but the Church waits for the tender voice of the saint who has penetrated the veil and has gazed with inward eye upon the Wonder that is God." Tozer's is such a voice.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'm going to go with God on this one. :-)

Seriously, it's not that kind of book. This is not a story; Tozer is describing the movements of the spiritual life.

What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He reads well, but he's not the attraction here.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I like to listen to it in sections and spend time reflecting on them and responding to God in prayer.

Any additional comments?

I don't know if there's a way to do so easily, but it would be very helpful to have the 'chapters' actually match the chapter divisions in the book. I've enjoyed Audible so far, but I do find it unnecessarily confusing to navigate, especially in books that are segmented into multiple 'parts' (e.g. the New American Standard Bible is a great gift, but troublesome to actually use).

Tozer is on the mark

If you could sum up Pursuit of God in three words, what would they be?

Just like the title: Pursuit of God

What did you like best about this story?

Tozer is becoming one of my favorite theologians. His writing is easily understood and he has a strong insight into the heart of God

Which scene was your favorite?

The last chapter was my favorite

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. This is a book to take one chapter at a time and reflect on it through out the day. Consuming this all in one sitting would be a little overwhelming and much of the content would be lost.

Any additional comments?

If you are looking for an author that is in pursuit of God's heart, it is Tozer. As such, I'll be seeking more of his books. Grover Gardner is a good choice for Tozer as well. His voice is calm and clear. He doesn't add or distract from the content which is what I was looking for.

Tozer’s Seminal Work

I have read or listened to most of A.W. Tozer’s books and have always emerged not only convicted, but with clarity on how to improve. While some of his works require an above-average understanding of Christianity past and present, “The Pursuit of God” is accessible to any believer. If I were starting a church or a Bible Study group, “The Pursuit of God” would immediately be assigned reading. The narrator here does an excellent job of conveying the nuances of Tozer’s style of writing and preaching which can best be described as a no-punches-pulled assessment of fallen humanity’s desperate need for the Saving Grace available only through the Suffering Servant Savior Jesus Christ. I plan on continuing to read/listen to every word Tozer wrote as I believe him to be the most humble, yet most Christlike theologian (and, possibly, person) of the 20th century.

Mixed but Overall Positive Feelings

This book was particularly timely for me. Stoking my affective love for God has been an underlying theme in my spiritual life the past year or two, and that’s exactly what Pursuit of God is about. This was actually a pleasant surprise to me. I started listening to it just because it sat in my Audible library unlistened to for a long time, so I thought I’d finally get around to this old gem of American Evangelicalism.

There were parts of the book I loved and other parts fell flat for me. Parts of the book that felt timeless, others that felt dated. Parts I nodded my head too and others that made me feel like Tozer and I were on different playing fields. I felt my soul particularly fed by the first few chapters and the last few. It was the middle chapters that found my shoulders shrugged most often. I always appreciated his ending each chapter with a prayer. These alone were good for the stirring of my soul towards Christ.

In summary my feelings about The Pursuit of God are mixed. Perhaps I had too high expectations for a book considered one of the gems of 20th century Christianity. Though I thought the narration was fine, perhaps the problem was I did audiobook instead of actually reading it. That being said my overall impression is positive. It was helpful for my walk with Christ. I would recommend Pursuit of God for those, like me, needing to stoke the zeal of their faith.
