A great daytime meditation w/1 tiny issue

Back when Amazon allowed comments on reviews, you'd often see people complaining about less-than-perfect ratings based on the product just not quite fitting the need you wanted it to - a need that may not be common among other purchasers. But my tiny issue with this title isn't just something that will only affect me, so please keep that in mind while reading this review.

Firstly, while I am hardly an expert on meditation recordings, I've listened to many different kinds, and overall this hit most of the marks that matter to me. The music is soothing and gentle without erratic chimes or discordant notes - I have a real sensitivity to sharp noises, and other than the one time she started talking again after quite music for a while, I wasn't jarred even once. And I've determined that it's nearly unavoidable for their voices to jar a little bit at those moments. The "journey" she takes you on is pretty basic and that also is a great thing from my mind. I don't listen to meditations that are trying to impart big ideas, because that's not what I need meditation for. I need it to relax and calm, maybe sometimes to gently wake me up.

The biggest thing I'm impressed by is her breathing techniques. I have very shallow lungs, and often I can't come close to the length of a breath that a meditation recording wants me to do. But her slowly counting up to longer breaths really worked for me. And I was surprised how much resting my hand where I could feel the breath helped keep me in touch with my breathing - even when the meditation was briefly interrupted by 1 spam phone call and a text from my mother.

But now, to my own issue - and it's one I encounter a lot in the world if mediation recordings. At the beginning her method involves at least some visualization. As a person with 100%, all senses, awake-or-asleep, aphantasia, I cannot visualize. Now don't get confused, if you've never heard of aphantasia. Yes, I have an imagination. I can imagine there's a tree in front of me, decide how tall it will be, what kind of leaves it'll have, etc. What I can't do is experience the tree in my mind. I can't internally see the tree, feeling its bark, smell it or hearing the wind blow through its branches. I can even write you a lovely piece of prose that, if you aren't someone with aphantasia like mine, would probably help you to visualize it completely. But that's something I just can't do myself - which has often been an extra challenge in trying to use meditation to help me relax.

And no, I'm not entirely unique in my aphantasia. Now that more research is being done on internal visualization, we are coming to realize that most people's ability to do so exists on a spectrum, and as many as 20% of people experience an inability to visualize.

However, it really only is a small bit in the beginning, while most of the actions and thoughts she encourages you toward for the rest of the recording don't really require the ability to visualize. And I think this one is so good overall that I'll be using it on occasion even with that small issue. If you're someone though, who gets too frustrated by requests to visualize being part of the meditation process, this might be one to skip until you're less bothered by it (took me a few years of effort).

If you don't have any significant inability to visualize, and you like the techniques I described above, I do heartily recommend this title.

Best so far

I’ve been trying sooo many different guided meditations and either the voices are whack or the music and words are a little nutty. Megan Monahan has it done right. This is a great mid day mediation!

I have been struggling with great anxiety during covid (as have many) and found this to be a very excellent meditation on releasing anxiety and calming thoughts.
