Publisher's summary

Adair is a young journalist living in London. Overshadowing his childhood is the obsession his father, Doctor Brown, has with a medical conspiracy. Fearing for his life, the doctor flees to a remote Scottish island, leaving his two sons behind wondering whether their father is deluded, insane, or actually telling the truth.

Sophia is Adair’s childhood friend. At the age of 11, they become separated only to meet years later through the Internet. However, they are soon overcome by dark events and the horrific fracturing of their everyday lives.

Shadows creep and menacing events take place as together they seek to unravel the terrible secrets, which are being kept from humanity.

May be heard as a stand-alone.

Grim, like a gargoyle on a Cathedral

E.M.G. Wixley continues the tale that began in the Devil's own words, and plays out even darker than before. This reminds of a Dan Brown novel, but better because it isn't dealing with some dopey concept like Da Vinci leaving traces and clues that no one would find or understand for hundreds of years. The mystery and conspiracy here is palpable and is like a foggy London night when Jack the Ripper was on the loose. You'll be on your toes, keeping one eye over your shoulder, and the other one the story.

Wixely has a way with words that wraps you up in their detail, honestly, I think this was a highly researched novel, as it feels like EMG has been to the places described herein. The book is pretty dark, and the protagonists really struggle to keep themselves together, alive, and on point and their dilemma is fascinating to behold. Dark, grim, and gritty doesn't accurately describe the situation that they find themselves in, and you will not want to put the book down for fear of what might happen next.

There were some audible issues last book that were fixed, and none of that is found here. Johnson handles the story and the characters well, although he doesn't seem as polished or adept as other narrators I've heard. I think he still needs to get his narrating legs a bit more, but have no doubt that he will improve.

This series is really picking up and it is pulling me in more and more. I cannot wait for the next thig Wixely releases.

Exciting!

In volume 2 Sophia is watching her niece and nephew who are kidnapped by an evil entity. The story exists between two worlds. It seems they are colliding as the author cleverly brings in new monsters and helpers.Sophia of course has to find them which takes her on the adventure of a lifetime, filled with action.
Like volume 1 there's many details to listen for. I was on vacation and driving when I started this book and got a bit distracted so I automatically set it back a chapter to relisten. i didn't want to miss anything. The story is fast paced and filled with suspense. It kept me on my toes and that's something I like in a book. I want to think while I'm reading or watching a movie. The world building is phenomenal and is written so well it seems real.
It's a great listen for anyone who loves fantasy, action and adventure. There's even a romance between Sophia and long time friend Adair. It packs a punch!

A diabolical storyline that continues ..

This is the prequel to In The Devil's Own Words. This whole storyline is diabolical and reflects a battle between good and evil with many twists along the way. I look forward to seeing how it eventually ends!

Clive did a good job keeping it all together, which I imagine was a complicated task for him. He followed through on bringing the well developed characters to life really well.

A good series to get lost in...

Dark

This story was great. Likable characters becoming embroiled in the existence of a world that runs under our own. While that's a fairly common thread among urban fantasy and paranormal stories, this takes it in a different direction to where instead of framing it like a big bombastic world instead it's a dark creepy one where creatures take what they want from right under our noses. I'm definitely intrigued and looking forward to returning to the universe that the author created.

What made this experience even more interesting is that the narrator has a very pleasant voice and narrative style. At some points my mind felt like everything was going well, while the characters are in mortal terror, just because he kept everything so pleasant to listen to.

Different kind of supernatural

I received a copy of this audiobook via Audiobook boom, and am voluntarily leaving an unbiased review. First, there is a lot of language in this book. If you don't like that kind of thing, this one's not for you. The book starts out slow, but when the characters start feeling poisoned, it's all uphill from there. There was a great effort to build the characters, and to impart the world they inhabit. There's mystery, conspiracy, and scares all through the book. Honestly, what got me what the narration. While fitting for a UK based book, the narrator has a tendency to vocalize the end of each sentence. Imagine a schoolteacher reading to a class, and you have the idea. Also, there is very little difference in the inflection of each character. Don't get me wrong, he's good, but this interpretation could have been better. Still, once you get past that, and into the story itself, you don't notice it as much.

great book 2

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Thankfully, the powers that be took reviewers feedback to heart and cleaned up the audio in book 1 and maintained the quality in this book. So, in short, the narration is pretty good.

I really like where the story is going in this series. It really sucked me in and kept me engaged the whole time. There is lots of creepy goodness and some well written intrigue. All in all, I really liked this and would love to continue the series.
