Publisher's Summary

Mariah is a blacksmith's daughter. She should have never let herself hope for more. As a young woman with the wings of a hawk, it's no wonder she considers herself nothing less than a freak. Before she even has a chance to find her place, she is betrayed and chased from the only home she has ever known. Now, living alone is the only way she knows how to survive - away from judging eyes and the kingdom that would make her a slave. But when Xae, a young refugee shifter, shows up in her territory, her mentor pushes her to aid him, to hint that she is meant for greater things. Xae's little sisters have been captured, and Mariah may be the only one who can rescue them.

To succeed, she must return to her homeland and venture all the way to the seat of the king's power. Despite help from friends she and Xae make during their quest, Mariah finds that abandoning her own freedom may be the only way she can liberate the two young girls otherwise destined for a life of servitude and torture. Will their daring plan to free Xae's family work, or will Mariah end up bound by the shackles she's spent her whole life trying to avoid?

An Interesting Quest

The author does a really great job developing the main characters. At the beginning, the story is a little slow; but once it gets going, the author does a good job of keeping it moving forward at a faster pace. Mariah and Xae are on a quest to rescue Xae's sisters, along the way they encounter Shira. This story is full of likable characters, close calls, a hint of action, and a lot of adventure. Towards the end, things really got exciting and I was hanging on every word.

There were some things that seemed unclear to me, however, I think a second listen would clear them up or they will be addressed in the next book.

I enjoyed listening as the characters grew closer to each other throughout their quest. The author also gives us a different perspective as to the origins of shape shifter type creatures.

The narrator did a great job bringing this adventurous story to life. She distinguished between characters well and was consistent throughout.

I look forward to the next audio installment in this series.

I NEED book 2!

I’ve always loved a good shifter novel, but have actually never read/listened to one where the shifters were anything but full human or full animal, so this had my interest right out of the gates. I really liked the idea of having a religion/gods backing the ability as well. It added a layer of mysticism we rarely get from shifter novels (though I’ll admit that I mostly stay in the romance genre). Mariah started out as a self-imposed loner with a bit of a woe-is-me complex when it came to family, but really came around as her relationships with new friends progressed.

There’s not much I can reference to without spoilers, but I will say that this book was almost like a backstory or prequel to a much longer tale. There were explanations, character building, and details abound, but not a whole lot of conflict until the final chapters. While it wasn’t quite a cliffhanger ending, it did leave me wanting to hear what comes next.

As for narration, Lyn has a special place in my heart as a narrator. She’s great with giving everyone their own unique voice, does accents well, and her pacing is perfect in my opinion.
