Publisher's summary

A poignant and hilarious tour of the last frontier, the ultimate forbidden zone, The Vagina Monologues is a celebration of female sexuality in all its complexity and mystery. Hailed as the bible for a new generation of women, it has been performed in cities all across America and at hundreds of college campuses, and has inspired a dynamic grassroots movement - V-Day - to stop violence against women. Witty and irreverent, compassionate, and wise, Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning masterpiece gives voice to real women's deepest fantasies and fears, guaranteeing that no one who hears it will ever look at a woman's body, or think of sex, in quite the same way again.

"I am so pleased to present this just-recorded audio edition of my play for people to hear in America and around the world," Ensler said. "Often during my travels performing and in discussions about The Vagina Monologues, many people have asked me to make a recording so that they could listen to it again and again. With the online introduction coming just before V-Day 2001, it also means a lot to me that the Audible.com sales of The Vagina Monologues will help support the expanding movement to stop violence against women."

Critic reviews

"Spellbinding, funny, and almost unbearably moving...it is both a work of art and an incisive piece of cultural history, a poem and a polemic, a performance and a balm and a benediction." (Variety)

Powerful, Funny, Unique

Would you listen to The Vagina Monologues again? Why?

Yes, I would. It was funny and entertaining, and I'll likely find new things to appreciate about each story.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Vagina Monologues?

The poetic monologue about being assaulted.

What about Eve Ensler’s performance did you like?

I liked the exaggeration and drama she used for each of the different characters. She was funny and great with accents.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Any additional comments?

I'd never seen a performance of the Vagina Monologues before, and I am involved in an upcoming production. I am surprised at the choice of stories in a show that was so revolutionary. I expected more feminism and woman power. I'm surprised only one monologue talked about abuse.

Uncomfortable and inspiring

Hopefully you can understand what to expect from the book by the title. There is a great amount of vagina discussion. At many times I found my self turning down the volume as I listened in my car to and from work, in fear that I might get strange looks from others in traffic if they heard what I heard. But it was amazing! I can't believe how much it spoke to me. The vagina is the main and only subject, but it opened up a greater understanding of women and myself. It awoke a sense of bravery for myself as a woman. I highly recommend this book! I will be purchasing a physical copy to keep forever.

Enlightening

I wondered what all the hype was about and now I see. This book is a salute to the vagina and what knowing yours can do for your self-esteem.

I thought I was a liberated woman!

Where does The Vagina Monologues rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Eye opening. The fact hat it is performed by the author/performer makes it completely real.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

She eases the listener from humor to serious information, and back to humor in order to not completely shock the listener.

Which scene was your favorite?

What would your vagina wear?

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

No film.

Any additional comments?

I couldn't believe I was really a closet prude!

Don't bother.............

Listen to the clip, it's the high point of a unusually pointless and crude "book".

Maybe better as a play

Not quite the entertainment I'd expected. The voice of the narrator was slightly irritating and the content was less than funny. Not sure how the content had the national effect it did.

Not what I was lead to believe it was.

I am new to audible. Amazon prime stated that The Vagina monologues was free through audible but this is not the case. The Vagina monologues was chosen by our book group and this is why I was wanting to listen to it but all I got was a commentary by the author and the whole bunch of name drops and why The Vagina monologues was so popular, not the actual book or play. I used one of my two free points to download this commentary and now I can't get that back. I am not only disappointed in Amazon prime I am also disappointed in audible and I'm disappointed in this commentary crap. I am probably not going to subscribe to audible.

No Stars

Is it allowed to put no stars? Wow I was disappointed maybe it was just overhyped I can only use the words horrendous or difficult to read or just bad. I have wasted too much of my life just writing this review thats how bad.

Vagina Monologues

I found this to be crass. What the author finds funny I found to be vulgar.

I now can say Vagina

Ok, I got this because I heard about the reviews...
It's a "close" look of short stories of women and how they view their vagina, ok.... some of the stories are funny, gross and then finally you say enough already, I'm exhausted of hearing Vagina every 3rd word. The writer/narrator can be a bit shrill.
