Publisher's summary

"My life, as you will read, has taken me from one cult to another. BRAVE is the story of how I fought my way out of these cults and reclaimed my life. I want to help you do the same." (Rose McGowan)

A revealing memoir and empowering manifesto - a voice for generations

Rose McGowan was born in one cult and came of age in another, more visible cult: Hollywood.

In a strange world where she was continually on display, stardom soon became a personal nightmare of constant exposure and sexualization. Rose escaped into the world of her mind, something she had done as a child, and into high-profile relationships. Every detail of her personal life became public, and the realities of an inherently sexist industry emerged with every script, role, public appearance, and magazine cover. The Hollywood machine packaged her as a sexualized bombshell, hijacking her image and identity and marketing them for profit.

Hollywood expected Rose to be silent and cooperative and to stay the path. Instead, she rebelled and asserted her true identity and voice. She reemerged unscripted, courageous, victorious, angry, smart, fierce, unapologetic, controversial, and real as f--k.

BRAVE is her raw, honest, and poignant memoir/manifesto - a no-holds-barred, pull-no-punches account of the rise of a millennial icon, fearless activist, and unstoppable force for change who is determined to expose the truth about the entertainment industry, dismantle the concept of fame, shine a light on a multibillion-dollar business built on systemic misogyny, and empower people everywhere to wake up and be BRAVE.

Includes two original songs by Rose McGowan.

I always wondered what it was like to be Rose

I used to see her all of the time at the Underground in Seattle, and just wonder what it was like to be her. We never spoke beyond saying "Excuse me" if we passed in a tight spot. She was so beautiful and seemed so confident. Two things that I thought I was not. A couple of years later I saw her in "Doom Generation". I too, was an actress, and again (not realizing that she was the same person that I envied at the Underground) wondered what it was like to be her. "Charmed" was too mainstream for me, but again, I thought she was great , and wondered what it was like to be her in "Death proof" and "Planet Terror". Now, I have a little bit of an idea of what it is like to be her. There is so much more to her than beauty and what I perceived as confidence. I'm sorry her path has not always been worth envy. I hope she is always appreciated for her intelligence, creativity, and her bravery. If you are reading this, Rose, thank you for writing this.

Rose is a MOST brave woman!

Rose McGowan might be the bravest woman I've ever heard from. Wish I could call her friend. I have no idea how she came out of the life she has led with so much insight. She is a real freedom fighter. I stand beside her in spirit. She speaks for so many women. It is time women to be heard. I will NOT see movies that are produced by the men she names or any other man that takes on the Hollywood idea of women. She is a hero to me. I respect and love her and her work. Thank you, Rose, for writing this gut wrenching book so full of insight and knowledge. May you have the strength to carry on! You're a warrior. I want and am glad you are on my side. Much love.

Eye-Opening, Heart-Breaking, and Elevating

As soon as my sons are old enough, I'm going to have them read this book so that they can learn just how unfairly women are treated in society today, and how it is their responsibility to help create a safer world for women and other marginalized groups. The writer's life story is full of life lessons we all can learn from. Thank you, Rose, for being you! Highest Recommendation!

This book should be required reading for every young woman

Rose McGowan articulates everything you have been thinking and feeling but were too afraid to say out loud for fear of sounding angry or being dismissed as a feminist. Her observations and thoughts are right on target. I hope many women will read this book and that it will cause some much needed change.

Look out world changes are coming

This book is long overdue. Every woman who reads this will see herself and the things she's been forced to endure just for being born female. I will warn you that this book is full of possible triggers for survivors of sexual assault. It's time we all stop and really look at the world and make some hard decisions about What we want for ourselves and our daughters. Rose is right, we need to stand and be brave.

A MUST HEAR AUDIO BOOK

necessary. powerful. authentic. infallible. brave. May McGowan never be silenced and may generations of women hear and act and be brave. I'll do everything in the remnants of my influence to have people consume this work and dare each one not to be moved into action.

Not worth spending your hard earned $ on.

I have finished this book. Sadly, Rose has convinced me of a couple of things. 1. She has some issues with mental health 2. She is a man hater
IF what she says is even half true she had a hard life and for that I empathize. No one should have to grow up the way she did.
She talks about the beginning of the me too movement and if I had not heard Selma Hayek tell a similar story I would not have believed Rose.
The most troublesome part of this book is the hatred towards men. She blames men for everything that is wrong with EVERYTHING! I am a feminist but she is OVERBOARD!
I listened to this book on Audible and Rose read it herself. And sang and read her poetry. Not sure you would get the same affect reading the book. I would not recommend this book to anyone. It was self indulgent at best and at worst... maybe not truthful. IMHO

Brave Should Be Required Reading

I hesitantly purchased this book, as McGowan is portrayed in the media as crazy, outspoken & destructive, but what the hell, I was on a flight and decided to try it. I was moved from the start and couldn’t stop listening. This soul bearing, eye-opening and thought provoking piece read by the author is a stunning work. Her experiences are her own, but the feelings of heartbreak, betrayal, assault and being dismissed are universally shared by women, including myself. This is a story of her life told in a frank, non-salacious way and at its core it unveils the truth about how women in and out of Hollywood are conditioned since childhood to conform to society’s perception of what they should. This is a BRAVE work and I am so glad I went with my gut & listened.

I honestly couldn’t even make it through

I was so put off by the weirdness o f singing and stuff in the beginning. I just want to love be Rose so much then she opens her mouth. I’m glad she is brave and I know she’s been through a lot she kinda reminds me of Courtney Love, or Sean Young idk there’s just sooooooo much ego to get through to get to the meat of the story. Had to return it. I feel that her as the narrator was a BAD choice

$14.95 Down the Drain

I wish I had read what tis was about. I am not a fan of first person books and this one allowed me to remember why.
The overall message, abuse of women, is timely, however, her presentation left me wanting to scream. We are to believe a street kid is as stupid as she pretended to be!
Women do need to be "Brave" when it comes to speaking out but don't ask the reader to believe this self-serving tripe.
The language, meant for shock value, just showed me Ms. McGowen has a limited vocabulary.
Be "Brave," get a dictionary, rise above the trash that Hollywood puts out.
