Publisher's Summary

Computer whiz-kid Peter Keithly, asked to transfer a betting formula onto computer tape, dies shortly afterwards. An old friend of his, Jonathan Perry, finds himself in possession of the tapes, and also discovers that there are greedy, desperate men who will do anything to get their hands on the lucrative software. The evil, bull-faced Angelo goes too far and ends up in jail. Fourteen years later he's free, and very keen not only to get hold of the tapes, but also Jonathan Derry.

Bad audio quality but a great story

I enjoyed this audio very much, set in what could have been the 70's in proper old English. The computer jargon and terms are very dated. I did notice the quality and pitch of the audio change from one chapter to another. If you can put up with that. It's worth a listen.

Classic Francis

Another cracking story from Dick Francis. This one split into two related tales centring on a computer betting system. The description of the computer program dates this one a little, but it's still absolutely first rate. Recommended.

Bad audio quality

If you can stick with it it's good but sadly has distorted sound to start with and occasionally throughout.

A brilliant twisting together of two stories

It is a shame that the producers can't be bothered to sort out the sound quality yet again.

Two stories in one, cleverly knitted together

A thoroughly enjoyable book with two related stories sharing a common theme but from very different perspectives. The "East Middlesex Comprehensive School" in Part One more meets the description of a public school or certainly that is the feel. This apart the stories seem to stand up to scrutiny. Tony Britton reads superbly and lends authenticity to the audiobook.

Dated but gripping, shame about the audio quality

The audio quality wasn't great, it changes pitch a lot particularly in the early chapters - must have been transferred from audio tape, which is apt considering the story.

The story itself was interesting, well put together, and classic Dick Francis. Amazing how computers have moved on though, it all sounds rather dated today!

I normally enjoy Tony Britton's narration but I found the American accent of the father a bit odd - adults moving overseas don't really pick up that much of an accent, but I guess he had to differentiate between the father and the son in the second half.
