Publisher's Summary

Robbery, arson, murder, and the one night stand that just won't end.

With 11 missing women to find and six high-profile burglary cases to solve, the last thing Detective Nathan McNamara needs in his life is one more complication. And that's exactly what his recent one-night stand is becoming - complicated. With his heinous lieutenant breathing down his neck for answers and his accidental girlfriend dropping hints for a commitment, Nathan is realizing that his career and his bachelor status are both on the line.

When the burglary cases suddenly escalate to homicide, Nathan must put everything else aside to stop the killer. But this is easier said than done when the blonde from the bar repeatedly shows up at his doorstep and enlists his own mother against him. Now he's more convinced than ever that his job hangs in the balance and that the Surgeon General's warning on the whiskey bottle should include something about women.

Loved the back story but...

Nathan's backstory was refreshing however the narration was painful. He did a perfect Nathan but the female, children and Black voices were cringe-worthy. I was actually grateful that it was a quickie as much as I wanted to hear more of the story.

I enjoyed the main character however.....

the primary story was too short . the secondary story plot, concerning the abductions was flimsy, we needed more than a one dimensional view from Mac's prospective .......

Awful narrator

The narrator is horrific. Not just conversations and women’s voices, but even Nathan’s voice. Didn’t want to finish

Well worth the money!

I was hesitant to spend money on a short story, but decided that I like the series enough that I had to read this one. While short, it was excellent! I loved getting to know Nathan and Shannon, and was tickled to see how they started dating. The case Nathan was working on was interesting and meshed well with their dynamic. The ending really made me want to re-read The Soul Summoner series, just to continue reading more about Nathan. It is an excellent short-story prequel!

Short story

The Detective is a short story regarding Nathan’s story prior to relocating to Ashville. The story was interesting and entertaining but it didn’t really add to the overall series. It would be nice to have his POV for the beginning of the story. The narrator did an awesome job!

Getting on the Nathan McNamara train....

Well this ended waaay before I wanted it to! Time to follow Nathan into the Soul Summoner. I enjoyed every minute of this book and the Narrator was so good I actually started picturing the characters. Just when you think this story is over....hang on a second...a really big twist just walked into Nathan's life and it could change everything!

Filler book - Nathan’s backstory

I’m interested in Warrens backstory, forget Nathan’s! This was basically a filler book that showed us Nathan’s perspective on what we already know and basically how he met Shannon. Not saying it’s not worth the read but it could have had more to it than it did to make it more interesting.

I could've skipped this book

I'm a bit disappointed with this book. It was short and didn't I didn't really learn anything new about Nathan. You can save your money by not buying it

A man on a mission

What made the experience of listening to The Detective the most enjoyable?

Nathan is so funny.

Which character – as performed by Carson Beck – was your favorite?

Shannon (thought she was manipulative) but Carson Beck did such a great job of making her seem naive but very crafty.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When he thought he had a lead to his sister.

Any additional comments?

I have read and listened to this entire series. Can't wait for the finale.

This Prequel will have you rushing out for more.

Where does The Detective rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Because it's a novella, it's a quick listen, so it's easy to listen to more than once.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Even though Nathan's mom had a small role, the scene with her voice mails was my favorite. It made me laugh out loud because I'm sure I sound like that on my son's phone.

What does Carson Beck bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Not really a fair question since I didn't read the book, but I loved the vulnerability he brought to the character of Nathan. He's not sure of his feelings, but morally he understands what's right. Nathan wasn't cocky, but more the kind of man I'd like to know.

Any additional comments?

A great way to understand the motivations of Nathan in The Soul Summoner. Please hurry and put the rest of this series on Audible.

such a great story

Would you consider the audio edition of The Detective to be better than the print version?

I'm really not an audio book kind of person, prints will always take precedence but Carsen Beck makes the book spring to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nathan is my favourite character in this book which is hardly surprising, considering this is his story.

What does Carson Beck bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

His voice is very similar to the voice I created for Nathan when I read the book

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

ah so many but to outline any would have to be given with a spoiler alert. The pending death of Nathan's bachelorhood had me seriously laughing out loud.

Any additional comments?

This is a great book, and it really leaves you wanting more, which is just as well there are a further 3 books available and a 4th on the way (soon yes Elicia??).

I am more than a little surprised that I enjoyed listening to the audio book as much as I did, I'm a total newbie to this format I've always avoided it as I love my books, I can hear and see them in my own head and having someone else put voice to those characters I was always scared that they would diminish the story somehow, this is not the case with Carsen doing the reading. I took everyone out for a walk this morning, something you really can't do with a book without taking your life into own hands lol I exercised and was entertained all at the same time.

The book introduced me to a few character I'd be happy to slap, Carsen did not dissuade me of my compulsions. I was laughing out loud on more than a couple of times and groaning out loud at other times.

Nathan is now a solid 3D character

I would rate the story a 6 or more but it wouldn't let :(
