Publisher's summary

An LAPD homicide detective must choose between justice and vengeance as he teams up with the FBI in the first novel of the "thrilling" Harry Bosch series (New York Times Book Review).

For maverick LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch, the body in the drainpipe at Mulholland Dam is more than another anonymous statistic. This one is personal...because the murdered man was a fellow Vietnam "tunnel rat" who had fought side by side with him in a hellish underground war. Now Bosch is about to relive the horror of Nam. From a dangerous maze of blind alleys to a daring criminal heist beneath the city, his survival instincts will once again be tested to their limit. Pitted against enemies inside his own department and forced to make the agonizing choice between justice and vengeance, Bosch goes on the hunt for a killer whose true face will shock him.

Impressed? Ace detective Harry Bosch is also on the case in other exciting Michael Connelly crime-fiction novels.

Logical sequel.

Narration: clear. Accent and pace appropriate.

Content: logical sequel to first in series. Good enough. Series worth pursuing.

A pleasant find

If you could sum up The Black Echo: Harry Bosch Series, Book 1 in three words, what would they be?

I'm new to the Bosch series. A friend recommended them and I have to say this is a great listen. The voice is perfect for the character. The pace is great. I am looking forward to listening to more.

ABSOLUTELY THE BEST OF THE HARRY BOSCH SERIES

This was my 201st novel that I've listened to on AUDIBLE.COM. I have read/listened to all 21 in the Harry Bosch series, not all in order of publication, and THE BLACK ECHO IS THE BEST in my humble opinion.and should be read first as it explains the relationship between Eleanor Wish (who's in the 1st, 5th, 6th & 9th novels).and Harry Bosch.

I am a Vietnam Veteran (US ARMY '67-'68), I found this book very compelling and moving regarding Harry's South Vietnam experiences both In-Country and as a returned veteran.

Excellent Narration by Dick Hill whi is the voice of Harry Bosch.

Great book

Lots of twists and turns. You maybe able to anticipate some of them, but there are always others that you won’t see coming. Bosch is a rebellious detective who often does things just to irritate others, such as handcuffing two internal affairs officers to a tree, but he never gives up on his search for “who done it”. Although Connally gave Bosch a draft number in 1968, a couple of years before they actually existed, most details are spot on.

I do recommend the story.

IT'S HARRY BOSCH! WHAT ELSE NEEDS TO BE SAID...

THE STORYLINE IS ALWAYS INTERESTING WHEN IT COMES TO HARRY BOSCH. BUT, I BELIEVE ANY H.B. BOOK SHOULD BE NARRATED BY WELLIVER HIMSELF. NO VOICE LIKE HIS OWN FOR AN EVEN BETTER LISTEN....

Great beginning to Harry Bosch

Listening to a book published in 1992 in 2021 was a reminder how much has changed in the past almost 30 years! Detectives and officers waiting to use shared typewriters and if lucky, a shared computer. Pagers and pay phones. Lots of waiting for call backs.
There seemed to be a lot more patience back then whereas in 2021, we would become impatient waiting 30 seconds for a response to a text.
References to AIDS and its spread among drug users and marginalized communities and the fear of exposure to the deadly virus.
There is also acknowledgement of the male-domination, misogyny, and non-stop cigarette smoking. At least fewer people seems to smoke now and no longer smoking in public offices. This book was a reminder that as a woman, misogyny was a given and how we had to guard and protect ourselves. It just was and we had little hope to change it. Now, there is more expectation of professionalism and decreasing tolerance for sexual harassment and misogyny.

The story was richly layered and well-woven. Storyline twists lurked and were pleasantly surprising! It was cool to be able to reflect on Harry Bosch’s beginnings so soon after Vietnam. At the time, it was a little over 16 years since the fall of Saigon. The memories and wounds were still fresh. At least the US doesn’t seem to vilify the soldiers who fought in Vietnam anymore.

Great story and I look forward to connecting the stories between different Harry Bosch stories.

Black Echo

Michael Connelly has created a great character in Harry Bosch. This has all the hallmarks of a good detective story: complex plot, great characterization, and surprises throughout. But don't start here; go back to the early stories and go forward. Numerous books to go through, but I'm enjoying them. I didn't care for the woman's voice. Everything else was great
