Publisher's Summary

This collection of stories goes back to Dan “Spider” Shepherd’s SAS days, and the missions that shaped him. From his training in the welsh hills and the jungles of Belize, through to his early missions in Sierra Leone and the Middle East, these nine stories chart his rise through the SAS, and his involvement with the elite Sabre Squadron.

Along with his comrades Jimbo, McKay and Geordie, Spider puts his life on the line on active duty…and sows the seeds of his future career. We even discover how he earned his nickname....

Excellent

Thoroughly enjoyed it. Needs to be read for what it is, a collection of short stories. Recommend to anyone who like the rest of the series.

Awful

A collection of short stories that are so similar that you think you have heard them before in the same audiobook. Hate not to finish a book once started but this was painful to complete.

A life in the SAS, Story by Story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book takes elements of SAS training and puts a storyline to them.

What did you like best about this story?

I like the way that I felt I was there ... almost

Have you listened to any of Paul Thornley’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Lots - I am a real fan and having run out of Andy McNab books I have now found Paul narrating Stephen Leather. All equally exciting and I think Paul really plays a major part in keeping my interest.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It is a bit long - I do a lot of driving and some of the stories being about 90 minutes the length of each section was ideal.

Any additional comments?

Keep up the good work Paul - I will keep listening to the books you narrate !

Publisher rather than author driven?

Story already know from other books
Lots of repetition about characters between chapters
Chapter 1 and 2 contradict when hero got his spider name
Every chapter ended with publisher sign off for a whole book VVVVV annoying
Great narrator
Vvvvvv disappointing

A TRUE SENSE OF WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE IN S.A.S

A real page turner as it were. I was in the Regiment but before middle east and it's as if a log of his work had been written daily. brilliant Book. well narrated too.

Awful

Had to stop listening after just 90mins.
Badly researched.
Characters that are complete muppets. Despite what Stephen may think, we never thought of the DS as washed up, burned out or not fit for the field. God only knows which spanker helped him with his research.
Better to read something like "no mean soldier" than to waste your money on Mr Leather's SF fantasy :-(

I wanted to give 0 stars for the story, but it doesn't let you do that, sadly.

Best narration on any book i've listened to.

What made the experience of listening to Spider Shepherd: SAS the most enjoyable?

The story's are instantly captivating but what really made it for me is the Narration. Paul Thornley has a perfect voice for this style of story and his various accents and characters is superb. I felt like I was watching a movie as I listened through this book.

What does Paul Thornley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Absolutely brings the characters to life.

First Stephen leather

This is my first book by the author and knew nothing about him, I enjoyed it very much and for the first few chapters thought it was nonfiction until I had a break and googled spider shepherd. Although I tend to go for fictional books this won't be my last by the author, audio or otherwise,I look forward to meeting him again
