Publisher's Summary

The 14th thriller in the Spider Shepherd series promises even more gripping action from The Sunday Times best seller Stephen Leather.

Working undercover is all about trust - getting the target to trust you and then betraying them in order to bring them to justice.

But what do you do when you believe an undercover cop has crossed the line and aligned herself with the international drugs smuggler she was supposed to be targeting?

When a deep-undercover cop stops passing on intelligence about her target, MI5 sends in Dan 'Spider' Shepherd to check that she is on the straight and narrow.

Now two lives are on the line - and Shepherd discovers that the real danger is closer to home than he realised.

As Spider finds his loyalties being tested to the limit, an SAS killer is on a revenge mission in London, and only Spider can stop him.

Another good read in this series

It started slow for me, but as with all the others in this series, got me in its grip. I started with books 1 and 2 and had mixed feelings. Listened to some other books. Then went back to book 3 and found myself hooked. These books put u through a range of feelings about the world today and challenge some of your beliefs, only to find those beliefs reinforced a book or 2 later. Characters u love to like and love to hate. And the narrator is incredible. So many accents to deal with, and he does the women well too. So, the narrator really puts u there, and it's a very action packed and interesting place.

Another good Spider Shepherd book

The only criticism I'd have is that the narrator didn't pause between chapters and it took a few seconds to realise that he'd switched between characters and moved onto a new chapter. Perhaps a few seconds pause or an announcement of the chapter number would be good. Otherwise a really good Spider book.

Very interesting. Exceptional series. I would give five stars for the series.

P.S. I only give a novel a score of five stars for what I would class a classic or something like a modern classic, as much as I like Stephen Leather.
And to give five stars for the narrator, it has to be an exceptional performance, as much as I like Paul Thornly.

Great read, Excellent Author and Narrator!

Who does not love another Spider novel? Totally enthralling from start to finish, though I have to say as a father of two young girls this novel also made me feel sick to the stomach at times. But I guess that is all part of the emotional journey a good book will take you on.
Only downside was with the audio production, there seemed to be not enough of a pause between chapters or changes in character perspective, it's only a small negative but was still a bit confusing at times.

Not the best spider book

This isn't my favourite spider book by a long shot. The story is clunky, one of the bad guys is boring and the others are 2 dimensional caricatures. For such a poignant issue Leather could have really done alot better. The subject matter was tough, and the writing didn't do it justice. The usual interesting technical detail leather goes into is in this case about boats and fairly dull. This is the first time I've felt like this about a spider book, so 1 miss 13 hits so far. I have high hopes for the next one.

Spoiled by recording quality

This is an extremely good book beautifully read it was however spoiled by the recording quality. At the beginning of each chapter the word chapter was cut in half with the number and first few words missing. Occasionally (I presume when the recording process was paused) words were truncated or missing. This is a characteristic that increasingly occurs with recent Audible books.

mediocre

mediocre story saved from abandonment by Paul Thornleys narration. Not Stephen Leathers best but there's life left in Spider Shepherd yet.

Enjoyed the side plot better than the main one

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the Matt Standing plot better than Spider's journey through the book, it's more of a journey than a plot if I'm honest.

It felt like Spider had reached the end of his silk and was being wound down, packed away for a while if you know what I mean. Rumour has it that there may be more Matt Standing books which, if true, would be something I'd be interested in. If it's done in the manner of 'Takedown' and not 'The Sandpit' then this character has legs.

Not as many plot twists as usual but enjoyable none the less.

The Best one so far!!!

I have read all the Spider Shepherd books in order of "publication" and this is the best yet, a real "page turner". Again with Paul Thornley, he is the one and only narrator for Stephen

awesome

Great story, 2 stories running side by side. A new character appears, which I'm sure will turn up in future books. We'll worth reading or listening too.

The best one yet

I’ve had a few Spider stories. I’m near the end of this one and I have to say this is the best one yet. Two stories alongside each other. Really gripping with great action. Written with tremendous knowledge, nice humour and performed perfectly by Paul.

Fabulous

I am addicted to this series. Loved every minute of it. The only fault I could find annoying was that the two leading characters both has very similar names which if you are not aware of it, it could confuse the reader. Narrator fabulous as always.

YUK. Misled into Boredom.

Listened to first 3 chapters 4 times, thought it was a thriller but turned out to be a violent war story with military jingo and was not my cup of tea without some characters and story. Boring drag-on chest beating sleeping pill.
