Publisher's summary

Detective Inspector Munro is a burly Scottish policeman who doesn’t suffer fools gladly. Detective Sergeant West is an intelligent young woman, new to the force, with a lot to prove.

When a missing person case lands on their desks, Munro is skeptical there is much to it. But their investigation soon comes to some strange findings, and before long a body is found.

With a serial killer on their hands, they must act fast to trace a woman placed at the scene of the crime. Yet discovering her true identity, let alone finding her, proves difficult. And as the plot thickens they realise the crime is far graver than either of them could have imagined.

Too sick and twisted

The detective story held my interest. I thought the characters, the humor, and the interactions of the detectives were well done. However, the alternating chapters focused on the gory plans and step-by-step actions of a sociopathic murderer were too bloody, sick, and twisted for me ever to read. I skipped those and just read the detective story.

Unfortunately I can't recommend this book to anyone, because of the chapters detailing twisted gore.

The later books in the series are a treat because of the humorous banter among the young detectives and their mentor, and their differentiation according to special abilities.

If you expect a tight, police procedural, then you probably will find these stories frustrating. Procedures are not true to life. I enjoyed the comedy, workplace camaraderie, and the mutual support among the characters as they interact. The later books are wonderful. Skip the first few.

Excellent

Great writing. I will definitely order the next one. Lots of interesting characters and 0 boring stuff. So glad I found a new author that keeps and holds my attention. No whining wimps. Narration is perfect. Lately my favorite mystery/suspense writers have been a bit of a let down. On to the next.

David McCallion’s performance leaves nothing wanted

McCallion is masterful. His talent kept me riveted. He brings Munro to three dimensional life.
