Publisher's summary

A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation starring June Whitfield as Miss Marple, the sharp-witted spinster sleuth.

In the sleepy little English country village of St Mary Mead, all is not as it seems. Under a seemingly peaceful exterior lurks intrigue, guilt, deception - and murder.

Colonel Protheroe, local magistrate and overbearing landowner, is the most detested man in the village. Everyone, even the vicar, wishes he were dead. And very soon he is - shot in the head in the vicar's own study.

A visiting artist confesses to the murder, but residents saw him elsewhere at the time the Colonel was shot. If he didn't do it, who did? Is he protecting the wife whom he loves? Faced with a surfeit of suspects, only the inscrutable Miss Marple can unravel the tangled web of clues. A trap set, and Miss Marple's theory is put to the test when the true killer is finally unmasked.

Love These Dramatisations

What did you like best about this story?

Sometimes I don't have enough time to sit and listen to an audiobook over a few days - but these short dramatisations are a great way to engage with Agatha Christies flawless masterpieces.

What does June Whitfield bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

When she speaks she just is Jane Marple. Its perfect!

Any additional comments?

Murder at the Vicarage will always be my no 1 Miss Marple story and this was just as good as the novel.

Not This One

Any additional comments?

I absolutely adore most of the Agatha Christie dramatizations, and every other one with June Whitfield has been perfect. This one is kind of terrible. Griselda is a whiny idiot, and it is SO FAR from how she is written, it's crazy. I don't really like any of the voice actors, and this is one of the radio programs that suffers from a needless overload of sighs, gasps, umms, throat clearings and other noises filling up what might be a milisecond of dead air. It's okay to have a natural pause, you know, like how actual humans speak and converse?

Murder at the Vicarage is a fantastic Christie novel. This production is bad. Skip it.

Very Well Done!

I spend a lot of time traveling and these stories often keep me company and makes the drive not so long and tedious. There is a whole line of Agatha Christie books that have been dramatized and they are very well done. Not just actors reading lines. These are professionally dramatized with background noises and all. Can't wait to get the rest of them. I will listen to them over and over.

Fun Mrs. Marple mystery

A well done dramatization! The characters were great to listen to and the background sounds added delightfully to the story setting.

.Writing a murder mystery

It t might surprise some people that the modern murder mystery was early on formulated by Edgar Allan Poe. The idea of bringing the reader with the detective step-by-step through the process of deduction and elimination by his inspector Dupin . Agatha Christie of course elevated this elementary formula to new great heights in my opinion. I never came the conclusions of Miss Marple or Poirot before they were revealed in her books, which is what I believe the author wants so that one keeps turning pages. In the end, if you reach at least close to the same conclusions, that is very satisfying. In this book, which I am reading for a course (but I’m not sure I will finish before it starts so here I am listening to this wonderful dramatization) is that the author has chosen to view Miss Marple from that of a third-party, namely the vicar. I believe in most of her books Miss Marple is the one who is telling the story. I suppose it’s understandable, since this is the book in which Miss Marple is first introduced. As I say it’s really a wonderful dramatization Though honestly I expect that reading the book will be even more satisfying though I do now know the culprit, just Christie’s writing is great and how she uncovers clues while at the same time leading the reader astray at times fascinates me.

Dramatizations

Agatha Christie's book and televised shows are FANTASTIC and now the dramatizations of her book oh..so lovely. Truly they are as much joy to listen to as to watch as to read. The cast feel believable and authentic. I cant say enough about the wonderful world of Agatha Christie and now her books on Audible and many are dramatized.

Brilliant adaptation, Miss Marple brought to life

...as well as English village life. The intricacies of the plot were not at all diminished by the abbreviation.
