Publisher's Summary

Andy Crowl barely knew his recently deceased cousin, Craig Moore, so he’s especially surprised to be named as the sole beneficiary in Craig’s will. Not that there’s much to inherit: just an empty bank account and a run-down house.

Once Andy arrives in the town of Mortom, however, he’s drawn into his puzzle-obsessed cousin’s true legacy: a twisted and ominous treasure hunt. Beckoned by macabre clues of dead rats and cemetery keys, Andy jumps into the game, hoping to discover untold wealth. But unsavory secrets - and unanswered questions about Craig’s untimely demise - arise at every turn, leading Andy to wonder if he’s playing the game…or if the game is playing him.

Something’s rotten in Mortom. And this dead man’s game might not be all that Andy is doomed to lose.

Bizarrely Good!

This psych thriller has a very unique plot. I really enjoyed this debut thriller by Erik Therme.
The publisher's summary sets up the story very well. It's fairly odd and I've never listened to a book quite like it before.
Andy Crowl's cousin commits suicide, leaves Andy his house and sets up a macabre scavenger hunt that Andy has four days to solve because something happens then. What that something is and whether it's good or not Andy has no idea, when things get dangerous he can't stop. Andy loves puzzles and he has to finish. This is full of bizarre clues. It's a really fun book. Little bit of sad ending with superb irony.
Christopher Lane does an outstanding job narrating.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Good mystery with great narration

Good mystery by Erik Therme. Some reviewers have complained about the unlikable characters. That sort of thing doesn't bother me, as long as the characters are well-written. And Therme's are. The only objection I have is the untimely demise of a character named Craig!

Interesting Story.

I am familiar with Christopher Lane as a narrator and immediately liked him on another book. So when I saw this book was available with him as the narrator, I jumped on it.

I am new to Erik Therme's books and I like this story. It has a way of irritating you in a good way to want to know what's going on. The story is a good mystery.

Wonderfully weird

Wow! This was a wonderfully weird tale. Plenty of atmosphere, loads of sibling rivalry, family secrets and quirky characters. I loved the fact that brother and sister had a 'normal' sibling relationship. They bickered, they argued, but when push came to shove they had each other's backs. The confusion around the inheritance and the bizarre treasure hunt were completely absorbing. But the denouement, when it came, BLEW MY SOCKS OFF! I was NOT expecting that! No siree, not at all. What a twist! Really clever. All the players were well drawn, and all were believable. Mostly likeable enough but with proper human flaws. Did I mention that the twist was OMG!!!! Excellently narrated by Christopher Lane, I can hand on heart recommend this book. You can thank me later!

first ever review

Forgive me, this is my first ever review posted. I received this audible version as part of my on line book club very kindly from the author himself. Im not sure I would have picked the book as this was not an author I knew and actually thought it would be a British book (shows how little I know) however being an avid reader I gave it a go. I was hooked after the first few minutes after the initial American voice gave me a shock! The story line kept me listening, the many twists and turns, I decided I both loved and disliked Andy and his sister who both excited and frustrated me in equal measure. I found that I wanted to know about the puzzle almost as much as Andy, I dont want to give the story away but would readily purchase a sequel. anyone who wants a listen that is quick paced with a good story line twists and turns along the way that will keep you guessing until the last word, then this is the book for you.

A great fast-paced puzzler

I really enjoyed this, fast-paced, treasure hunt story. There was a real sense of frustration and running out of time. I love a good puzzle and they did keep me guessing on the whole, though some of the easier ones were a little drawn out. The townspeople were odd, to say the least, and all had their foibles. The main characters Andy and Kate were more likeable than not but felt Andy should have been portrayed as less of a douche, as I rooted for him less by the end of the book than I should.
Good audio, though some of the word puzzles could have been read out to make them clearer (or would that have given the game away). I did not have the text to compare to.
Overall a cracking mystery, a gripping read and a satisfying conclusion.

Excellent twists!

An excellent listen with such well drawn characters that I’m still thinking about them and how I liked or disliked them. One of my favourites was actually the bad guy but no more about that! The build up and atmosphere were really thrilling. And although I almost always know where books are going, I really didn’t with this one. The plot became complex and each chapter sent me in different directions. If you like a mystery that baffles and makes you think out of the box this is the one for you. So different from anything I’ve read for a long time and well worth five stars!

The treasure hunt is on!!!!

The treasure hunt is on! Who knew having a house left to you when a relative died would result in this?
Andy & his sister go to look at & clear the house and the treasure hunt unravels before them. Some strange neighbours if I’m honest. But small towns can unearth characters! & these guys definitely find them.
The hunt itself, is confusing and torturous. Patience is needed and as the story unfolds things happen that would test anyone!
A teaser & fast moving tale.

Fast-paced and thrilling

What a gem of a book! Original plot, witty dialogue, memorable, well-rounded and realistic characters, mysteries, secrets - I loved every minute! I listened to it on audio and read it at the same time, finding it difficult to tear myself away from the story, which was fast-paced and truly thrilling. The audio narration was excellent. This book was a real treat for me and I keep recommending it to all my friends.

Engaging mystery

I enjoyed this book! The characters are very accessible, the tone is engaging, the plot quickly draws the reader in, the story is plainly ridiculous but great fun and I looked forward to continuing with it.
Andy arrives at the town of Mortom after the death of his cousin, Craig, as he is the sole beneficiary in the will. He can't understand why his cousin has done this and there isn't much to inherit. But Andy soon stumbles across the first in a number of strange clues that have been set by Craig and the rest of the book is focused on following Andy as he chases around after clues and puzzles, planned by Craig prior to his death. I found myself trying to figure out the puzzles to be clever and work out where it was going but I didn't have a clue and the end took me by surprise.
Narration is spot on and really brings the story to life, adding to the experience.
Recommended if you want a light read with a bit of a punch so long as you are able to suspend belief and just go with it....

I received a review copy of the book from the punisher/author, don't know anyone related to the book and have given an honest review.
