Publisher's summary

Jack Ryan Jr.--along with the covert warriors of the Campus--continues to uphold his legendary father’s legacy of courage and honor in this thriller from number one New York Times bestselling author Tom Clancy.

Privately training with special forces, he’s honing his combat skills to continue his work within the Campus, hunting down and eliminating terrorists wherever he can--even as Jack Ryan Sr. campaigns to become President of the United States again.

But what neither father nor son knows is that the political and personal have just become equally dangerous. A devout enemy of Jack Sr. launches a privately-funded vendetta to discredit him and connect him to a mysterious killing in his longtime ally John Clark’s past. All they have to do is catch him.

With Clark on the run, it’s up to Jack Jr. to stop a growing threat emerging in the Middle East, where a corrupt Pakistani general has entered into a deadly pact with a fanatical terrorist to procure four nuclear warheads they can use to blackmail any world power into submission--or face annihilation.

WHAT? WHEN? WHO? WHY? WHERE?

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Someone who likes lots of detail about the characters, location and politics; and don't mind if the story drags on and on and on.

What could Tom Clancy and Mark Greaney have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Cut back on the characters (way to many to keep up with) the story didn't grab me and I didn't know where it was going, I didn't know who was significant to the story. I couldn't follow who were the good guys and who were the bad guys. I didn't know why some characters were introduced into the story.

What does Lou Diamond Phillips bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Lou Diamond Phillips was great...I personally think the story needs a re-write.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

...I am more than half way through the story and so far the answer would be done. I am going to finish it (it's taken awhile-because I don't like it) and unless some miracle pops out at the end I am sticking with done.P.S. If, some miracle pops out at the end I will come back and update this remark.

Any additional comments?

Often I don't give much credit to reviews that rate 1 or 2 when the majority of the ratings are 4's and 5's but next time I will read them and consider them more than I have in the past.

If you like talking about guns, read/listen

I like guns. I like action movies. I normally really like Tom Clancy novels because they read like an action movie in my head. Whenever I see a Tom Clancy title in an audible sale, I have to snatch it up because I know it's going to be an enjoyable 15+ hours of my life where I can multitask some menial task while I picture some awesome fight and chase scenes. But this book.... the lack of imagery and character development made it very hard to get through. I don't know how you can make characters, that I've already invested in from other titles, so uninteresting that I rather sit through traffic in "silence" instead of continue to listen to the novel. I just wish the author gave as much attention to detail as he gave the guns in this book to the the actual scenery the characters were in. You get so many details on what gun is being reloaded with what caliber bullet, and the character aiming down what modified sights, but almost nothing on what building they're running into or street their being chased down on. The book also reads like some NRA fan boy's fever dream. Women are evil. Everyone but the USA are evil or unreliable. Democrats and the media are dirty snakes, and Republicans are the saviors the nation needs.

That being said, Lou Diamond Phillips does a great job. His British accent could use work, but everything else was great.

WAY too much detail!

What disappointed you about Locked On?

Though I am usually a Clancy fan, and thought Lou Diamond Phillips is a superb narrator, this book is beyond tedious. There are too many meandering unrelated story lines and the book is so full of extraneous technical detail that it could use another round or two of heavy editing! Indeed, it feels like the authors are just showing off their technical knowledge without regard to pacing of the story.

Has Locked On turned you off from other books in this genre?

No

Have you listened to any of Lou Diamond Phillips’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but will now look for books read by him. He's one of the best narrators I've heard, and I've listened to over one hundred audible books.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Locked On?

I'd cut most of the technical information and jargon. I'd also spin off some of the story lines for another book.

Give me more! Loved it!

Would you consider the audio edition of Locked On to be better than the print version?

Due to a busy work schedule I enjoy audio books more because I spend most of my time in the car travelling to and from work and while Im at work.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Locked On?

I particularly loved the shoot out scene in France. Lots of action, and was on the edge of y seat through out that scene.

What does Lou Diamond Phillips bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I absolutely love his style of narration. He adds accents, different tones, different speach styles according to the characters background or origin and stays on point with his narration. When i listen to his narration i can actually picture mentally the different characters. Very enjoyable, in fact aside from being a Clancy follower, Im becoming a Lou Diamond Phillips follower. Great Narration!!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to the book over the course of a week or two.

Any additional comments?

I do not agree with some of the other ratings this book has recieved. I found it to be very enjoyable and cant wait for the next book re: The campus and The Team. Loved it!

Great narration but story didn't hold my attention

What about Lou Diamond Phillips’s performance did you like?

He is so good that I forgot I was listening to Lou Diamond Phillips. He has great ability to change his voice from character to character.

Any additional comments?

Maybe it's just me, but I tried 3 times to finish listening to the story, and I just couldn't. The characters didn't grab my attention. I didn't feel any emotion that made me want to continue. And for me personally, there was too much information about the technical aspects. I'm sure some people would appreciate that part, but not me.

Enjoyable but not his best.

I am a big Tom Clancy fan but I am going to have to say that the storyline on this was not as good as his past novels. I found the severe view of politics in this story to be a distraction and could have done without. The politics either made you good or evil depending on which side of the isle you are on. Besides the politics there was your typical action scenes that we all have come to love form Clancy. I found Lou Diamond Phillips enjoyable to listen to and I would listen to more of his narration's.

ultra right wing trash

What disappointed you about Locked On?

Clancy used to be a very good writer. Now he just spouts Rush Limbaugh like trash talk. Every arab is out to get the U.S., and every liberal is undermining the country. This is the last Clancy book I'll ever buy. Don't waste your money or your time.

Locked On

Lou Diamond Phillips brought the story to life with his great narration. In keeping with the Tom Clancy tradition there is a lot of action and politics. I enjoyed Clark back as the head of Rainbow even if it was temporary. Thought the flight attendant on the corporate jet as a former naval medic and all round expert was great and hope Clancy expands her role in future books. Looking forward to the next book.

labored, intensive, mostly dull.

Formulaic. Somehow it had just enough interest to keep my listening for the entire time, but cannot recall why now.

The romance had a nice twist, but was otherwise littered with corny dialogue and telling emotions with little feeling.

Glad that George Bush and Bush Jr. were along for the ride. Too many political undertones for my taste, but I guess we must all choose sides eventually, right?

Typical Clancy but WAY too many characters

I lost track of some of the characters at the beginning of the novel because there were so many! However, I was able to focus on the major players about midway. This is the First book I read with Lou diamond Phillips as the narrator and he did an excellent job. I love Scott Brick but Lou is now on my list of preferred narrators!
