Publisher's Summary

Mark Hawkins, former park ranger and expert tracker, is out of his element, working onboard the Magellan, a research vessel studying the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. But his work is interrupted when, surrounded by 30 miles of refuse, the ship and its high-tech systems are plagued by a series of strange malfunctions and the crew is battered by a raging storm.

When the storm fades and the sun rises, the beaten crew awakens to find themselves anchored in the protective cove of a tropical island...and no one knows how they got there. Even worse, the ship has been sabotaged, two crewmen are dead, and a third is missing. Hawkins spots signs of the missing man onshore and leads a small team to bring him back. But they quickly discover evidence of a brutal history left behind by the island’s former occupants: Unit 731, Japan’s ruthless World War II human experimentation program. Mass graves and military fortifications dot the island, along with a decades-old laboratory housing the remains of hideous experiments.

As more crew members start to disappear, Hawkins realizes that they are not alone. In fact, he suspects they were brought to this strange and horrible island. The crew is taken one by one, and while Hawkins fights to save his friends, he learns the horrible truths: Island 731 was never decommissioned and the person taking his crewmates may not be a person at all - not anymore.

    "Interesting fun story"

This was a fun, fast-paced, engaging story with good character development, several harrowing moments and some poignant ones as well. Enjoyed the story and narrator very much.

Not a particularly good story, but not bad either. Not any real mystery and it played out in a fairly typical manner. Narration was good, somewhat robotic at times. All in all it was a decent listen, nothing more, nothing less.

    "An amazing adventure ride!"

I'm a sucker for a good adventure book and always loved science fiction. This book does a great job of combining the two in a captivating way! On top of that the book introduces the readers to a topic I never knew much about, chimeras. This took my imagination to places I've never thought about before.

It's not your normal strained on an island book! Very dark, human experiment dark. If you don't mind the gore and creepy possibility being explored its a very good book. Just a be prepared for some sick s***.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

If you are into gruesome descriptions of genetic manipulation, this one is for you. If not, then not so much.

What was most disappointing about Jeremy Robinson’s story?

It relies upon gore far too much, and some of the suspension of disbelief required is a true stretch. Dragged on abit as well. So so overall.

What three words best describe R. C. Bray’s voice?

    Strong
Authentic
Consistent

Was Island 731 worth the listening time?

    50/50.

    Any additional comments?

There are a number of books in this genre of gruesome fantasy, and this one is not the best, The ideas are there, and overall it's ok, but the devil is always in the details, and I fear this one has been left alone in that area.
Recommended with alot of reservations.

    Any additional comments?

This is one of those books where you just keep saying "Oh C'mon!" It is filled with idiotic characters & the action is contrived, so I could no longer tell myself to just let it go and enjoy it for what it is, a trite story with bad narration.

Spoiler alert: Just to name one or two things: I mean, c'mon! You are out in the middle of the south Pacific and you jump overboard from a moving ship, you have no idea if anyone even sees you, just to salvage a dead turtle, then the moving ship stops and turns around and come back in about 3 minutes (apparently momentum plays no part in this ocean). You are then attacked twice by a Great White and are rescued...so of course the next day after the entire crew is rendered unconscious while being battered by the storm of all storms and mysteriously ending up in a calm lagoon, AND after finding out one of your missing crew was dragged off the surface by something faster and deadlier than a shark, when you hear a mysterious splash off the other side of the boat you jump right in without so much as a glance over the side! See what I mean: C'mon!

Or my favorite line: after discovering mysterious doings on the island the author tells us that our hero never abused alcohol, but he did, of course, often use it to forget bad things! So, the story seemed like it was written by a high school student and I have to disagree with all of the other reviews, I hated the narration. I know he didn't have much to work with but when not working with dialog it sounded like he was reading an instruction manual on how to assemble a grill.
I stopped less that 1/3 through. Save your credits.

    "THIS PLACE IS WICKED SCARY"

    WEATHER OUT THE WEATHER
Paralyzed solider, bird eating his leg, strapped to a table, lift your arm, that's not my arm!!, shark attack, mutilated turtle, gross autopsy, weird experiment, storm, jungle, pill box, rats, flying lizards, mass grave of mutilated bodies. Well, so much for the first 30 minutes. If you like a lot of action, this is the book for you. It is go, go, go, one danger after another, never ending danger.

I WORK IN A HIGH SCHOOL, I KNOW PINING WHEN I SEE IT.
Okay, I admit that there is a huge sophomore living in me. I love a book, with biological oddities, man made or not. I love a book with mad scientists. I love a book where something new happens every chapter. This book has all of that. You don't want to listen to this all at once, as it would wear you out. Your heart will need a break. Plus this is the first of a series, of which I have already read the third book. I am getting the second book.

    I LIKE TO NAME THINGS
R.C. Bray, who you should know from the Mountain Man Omnibus is once again excellent.

    "Pinch of sea salt required"

The book started well, you are put into a world of insanity and unpredictability very quickly and almost expect some sickening actions to come out. They do, gradually and you always feel sorry for something or someone. Unit 731 is easy to research, so know what you are getting yourself into. Just when the book gets very good, it starts to get a bit silly and quickly descends from being a disturbed horror experiment to a cheap computer game. Chimeras are one thing, but when they are action figures made from 57 different varieties you imagine super skrull or the x men.

I really enjoyed the book and wanted to keep listening, but it became a victim of its own sillyness with some of the chimeras and became much more comic book than thriller.

Entertaining enough but stick with it.

Got this on a whim as I had a long journey coming up and needed a book to listen to

The story is a novel idea and began well. Later developments were a little shakey but overall an entertaining story! Read well by the narrator

I think this May be the start if a series, but think for me it will remain a stand alone book

    "Thought provoking"

    Island 731

Jeremy Robinson has done it again, he has blurred the lines between fiction and non fiction. This time he has used a gruesome true event that happened in world war two and turned it into a what if it was never stopped and placed it in todays world where it could posibily happen.

Jeremy has brought something I had not known about to my attention. He has made me want to do research to see how in world war two these things went on and why no one was made to pay for it except the victims.

The story has mystery, love interest, friends and twists. I would love to say that this book was a page-turner but as I listened to iti would have to say it was a book I did not want to stop listing too, which did cause problems when going to sleep. Some very strange dreams!!

The narrator R. C. Brey did a great job of bringing accents to the characters, so it was enjoyable and easy to tell who was talking.
This is not the first book that he has narrated for Jeremy Robinson, hopefully not his last.
I do find some male narrators to be hard to listen too, sometimes I find them to have too deep a voice or slow talkers. I had no problem this time.

If I had to recommend this book to some one I would say if you liked Michael Crichton’s work you will love this book.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recomend this book to anyone, you can let your own imagination run wild with this great story.

What other book might you compare Island 731 to, and why?

Hard to compare as the story is a little unique, if you like any other Jeremy Robinson books then you will not be disapointed.

Which character – as performed by R. C. Bray – was your favourite?

The performance was great, all of the characters had a subtle change that helped bring the story to life.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, just a shame it wasn't the case but a great week of commuting.
