Publisher's Summary

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children. He is gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a 12-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox (his partner and closest friend) find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past.

"Still Not Sure How I Feel "

I am still not sure how I feel about this book! It was deep and interesting and kept me up way too late a number of nights. I became very involved in the characters, which is not always a good thing when one strays from the ....happily ever after guaranteed books....;. But it was the kind of story that has you thinking about it after you are done listening. Another note, the ending felt unsettling to me.

There is no doubt in my mind that French is a talented, detailed writer, now I just have to decide if it is too detailed for me. I did enjoy learning about Dublin and Crossley does a fine job. I can say with certainty that it is worth a credit.

"Hard to put down, from beginning to end."

The transitions from past, present and future were seamless. The narrator was flawless and his talent with individual voices helped pull the reader deeper into the story.

    "Compelling but long "

Compelling, but long. It's am intricately mystery populates by people whose very nature makes them prone to self-sabatoge. The long bits were importabw and it was a true to life murder mystery, but it was still long.

    "horrible"

It never ends. I don't understand I'm still waiting for an ending. it was on a book list of top 30 scariest books. not scary. And it has no ending. it was good until the middle really suspenseful then just disappointing.

    "Worst book ever!"

This book is poorly written and the story is horrible. I am so sorry that I wasted any time listening to this book let alone the money of purchasing it.
    Do not waste your time.

    "Frustrating"

This book had the potential to be so much better. It ended with so many loose ends that I'm left wondering why some of the main storylines were even bothered to be told.
The narrator was sloppy at times. I could hear long breaths and swallows. I will not choose another book narrated by him.

    "Great story! Poor audio editing."

The narrator has a rich voice but you can frequently hear his breath and his mouth moving (sounded like a dry mouth) - it was very irritating and distracting.

    "Real"

I couldn't stop listening to this! I laughed, I gasped out loud, and dropped my jaw all while listening as I walked around the mall, or at work, or on my couch. Steven Crossley has a raw, beautifully expressive voice. Rosalind was an all-too-familiar character for me. This (SPOILER) never-find-the-answers, justice-isn't-served, boy-doesn't-get-the-girl story hurt my craving for a happy ending, but I loved how real it was. Great story. Great narration. Could listen again!
