Book 2

What did you like best about this story?

Grave Shift by Barbara Burgess and Blanche Day Manos is an average mystery. The two main characters, mother Flora and daughter Darcy, are both widows. The daughter, a reporter, has come home to heal and regroup after the death of her husband. This is the second book in a series but there are no spoilers and this book stands alone.

Great Listen

What did you love best about Grave Shift?

I really liked this clean cozy mystery. I loved the unexpected twists in this story. The narrator did a very good job conveying the accent of people from Oklahoma.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Darcy is my favorite character. She is the lead character in the book. Darcy used to be an investigative reporter. She had an endearing personality. I also really liked her mom.

Which character – as performed by Michelle Babb – was your favorite?

Michelle Babb did a very good job with the voices. I had a slightly harder time trying to distinguish the various male characters. Darcy's voice was very interesting.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I liked the reaction to the earthquake. Having been in an earthquake before, I thought the author did a fantastic job conveying the unsettling feelings the characters experienced. I also like the fact the story almost had 2 mysteries in it. (1) disappearance of Andrea (2) stalker of Darcy.

Any additional comments?

I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher, and/or narrator. I found this book to be both a standalone and part of a series. This is the first cozy mystery that I have listened to. I enjoyed this book very much and will look at more by both this author and narrator. I found both to be very talented.

What do you know about ranching?

cozy mystery, amateur sleuth, women sleuths

This cozy is rather more intense than most, but that's not a bad thing. The characters are engaging and certainly memorable. As the plot unfolds, the reader becomes more and more involved in the story. The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers. I'm glad that this is part of a series as I really enjoyed it!
As always, Michelle Babb adds a lot to both the story and the characters.

Lighthearted Mystery

Grave Shift is a fun whodunit that keeps a reader's interest. Apparently second in a series (Darcy & Flora Cozy Mystery), it is easily read as a stand-alone book. Darcy and her mother, Flora, are sweet talked into investigating the 2-year-old disappearance of a local woman when they get a letter from the woman's mother asking them to help find her daughter. The author keeps you guessing right up until the end. The story is interesting and the characters are charming. With earthquakes and mountain lions, first and second husbands, a little romance, and lots of investigating, these two women are bound and determined to solve the mystery of the disappearing woman. Michelle Babb does a great job of narration on the audiobook, giving each of the individuals a unique voice. Her voice is easy to listen to and makes the listening experience a pleasant one.

Jenny's review

A great Mom and daughter team cozy mystery. Flora and Darcy are at it again when they receive a letter in the mail about a missing woman, a case that was never solved. So many twists, turns and heart pounding adventure on every line I listened to. Michelle Babb has so much talent and a great voice in making a story come life. I listened to this story in two days and I am planning on listening to it again!

Fun Adventure with Mother/Daughter Investigators

Any additional comments?

After receiving a letter from a mother desperate to find her missing daughter, the mother/daughter duo of Darcy and Flora set out to investigate the daughter's disappearance. During their investigation, their hometown in Oklahoma suffers not one but two earthquakes. Between interviewing the suspects and the earthquakes Darcy and Flora’s adventures become dangerous. Is this a case of foul play or a voluntary disappearance? Can Darcy and Flora solve this mystery without coming to harm?

This is the 2nd book in the series but my 1st book. Grave Shift is a very entertaining story. I really enjoyed meeting the mother and daughter team. Being a daughter and a mother of a daughter, I really relate to the mother and daughter's personalities. It is a well-written story with a great mystery. The author supplied several red herrings throughout the storyline to keep the suspense going until the end of the story.

I listened to the audio version of this book. Narrator Michelle Babb is a fabulous storyteller. She has wonderful comedic time, accents, and diction. Being able to listen to Michelle’s version of this book really adds your experience of reading this story.

I was given an ARC of this book in hopes I would submit a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ho Hum & Comfortable.

Not thrilling and not mysterious. This listen was just slow. The story was slow, the narrator was slow. It was a nice story, but it was not gripping like I would have expected. I kept waiting to be sucked into this world and go through it alongside the main character, but it just never happened. Some of the descriptive passages seemed to placed in the story just to place a descriptive passage into the story as if were some kind of writing assignment.

I really had a hard time with the slow drawl of the narrator and found her a chore to listen to. A little southern drawl would have been nice and added to the flavor of the story, but it just seemed over the top and prevented me from really becoming fully immersed.

Pressure can build over fault lines.

Following the death of her husband, Darcy Campbell takes time out from her job as a reporter to recover, gently, back home with her mother, Flora, also widowed. A friend suggests she write a book about the local area, filled with anecdotes and the legends and myths of the Native American population. But when a letter arrives for Flora from the still anxious and grieving mother of a woman, missing without trace for two years, they decide to see if they could help if only by going to visit her. The two older women become friends whilst Darcy uses her investigative reporting skills and contacts to try to find out what had happened to the twice married and independently wealthy missing daughter.

This cozy mystery is as much about the people and locations as it is about solving what might, or might not, be a crime. The mother-daughter sleuthing team are well characterized with nice cameo portraits of the other protagonists. Told in the first person from Darcy's point of view, a picture is also painted of her home town in Oklahoma and the people living there, as well as of the ranch in Amarillo owned by the missing woman. Conversations are family familiar and the comfortable relationships feeling real. This is further enhanced by Michelle Babb's fine narration. Her warm, Texan accented voice is clear, well modulated, full of expression and follows the text immaculately, bringing it to life. Her character voicings, too, are distinct and individual. As always with this narrator, a fine performance.

An enjoyable book, second in the series, but losing nothing by not having read book one. I will probably look out for later Darcy and Flora mysteries, revisiting the duo as if returning to old friends. Recommended to all who enjoy their crime in a cozy package.

Three and a half stars!

Would you recommend Grave Shift to your friends? Why or why not?

The book was ok. I think it needs shortening down. The main character tends to think a lot and that slowed the book down. I would still recommend it if you like mystery with no violence/language/sexual content.

Which character – as performed by Michelle Babb – was your favourite?

The narrator is good in this book. She had a southern accent which suited the story. I could imagine the characters quite clearly. I thought the narrator was very good compared to others that I have listened to!

Could you see Grave Shift being made into a movie or a TV series? Who would the stars be?

I could image this being made into a TV series, since it is clean, has suspense, mystery and is suitable for all.

Great author

I miss the first narrator. It is always disconcerting not hearing the voice you have associated with the characters from the first book.
