A cozy mystery that's truly cozy

Darcy Campbell and her mother, Flora Tucker, are back in another murder mystery in Ventris County, Oklahoma.

In the midst of a violent storm, a stranger is murdered in an isolated and now-abandoned shack. Except this man is not a stranger; he is soon identified as Pat Harris's long-missing husband, Walter. Their son, Jasper, has, as he often does for reasons that make sense to him, vanished into the woods, making him by normal standards an obvious suspect.

When a friend is the next person to die, it gets harder and harder for Darcy to listen to the insistence of Grant, the local sheriff, that she leave the investigation to him and his deputy. The new preacher goes missing, Ventris River and Lee Creek are flooding, food is vanishing from the Jenkins twins' home--what's going on? Is the supernatural as well as human mischief involved?

I really like Darcy, Flora, and their neighbors and friends. We continue to learn more about the history that ties them to the Jenkins family, and Darcy, at loose ends since the death of her husband, which brought her back to Ventris County, is beginning to get her feet back under and find her new direction. It's an enjoyable mystery, and an enjoyable series.

As always, Michelle Babb does an excellent job narrating, putting life into all the characters.

Recommended.

Terrific narrator!

amateur sleuth, women sleuths, murder investigation, cozy mystery

The publisher's blurb gives hints and there is no need for spoilers, several other reviewers have given a potted version of the plot. The author always gives a good twisty tale with no gratuitous erotica but with a solid plot and very realistic characters, and this one is a good example of her craft. So grab your caffeine, lounge a bit and enjoy!
I lucked out and got the audio delightfully narrated by Michelle Babb. If anyone can make a good book even better, it's Ms Babb!

Amazing cozy mystery!

During a very rainy storm, a stranger knocks on Flora’s door, just to leave running at the sight of her. Short time after, this man appears dead, but he won’t be the only one.

I absolutely love this series! And this book is no exception. I enjoy any cozy mystery due to their light nature and the guesswork I have to do while I listen to them, but this series has more interesting elements than most: Not only the characters are quite interesting, but the plots are usually quite convoluted, and they catch my attention from the start. There are usually also quite some surprises along the way, and there is more risk and danger involved than in other cozy mysteries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one, while also discovering more about some of the characters’ past. As in previous books, a natural disaster is again an important character in the story, adding an extra layer of excitement. I just can’t get enough of these adventures!

I have to confess that the only reason I tried this series was because of Michelle Babb, and I am happy that I did! She is one of my favorite narrators and she has a natural talent to bring characters to life and make stories shine. I could listen to her telling me stories for hours on end.

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Love, love love this series!

So, I just finished book 4 in this series and I sure wasn't disappointed. It's always a fun adventure with this wonderful group. Darcy has a knack for finding mysteries and for solving them too. Her family history is a fun puzzle to unravel and I'm always happy to ride along. As always, Michelle Babb brings life to these characters and makes it so easy to listen and get to know the characters. Wonderful twists and turns

This is rainiest July on record in Ventris County in Oklahoma and a stranger is found murdered during a thunderstorm. Since the storm, one of their friends has disappeared. After this friend becomes a suspect and a 2nd person is found dead under suspicious circumstances Darcy can’t help but get involved in the investigation. The danger is closing in on Darcy and her mother Flora. Can they solve the deaths and missing person case while escaping danger from mother nature and a killer?

This is another entertaining cozy mystery in a fun series. Although book 4 you can enjoy the story as a stand-alone. The characters are realistic and interesting, they have great chemistry and are loyal in their relationships. The mystery is well plotted with several twists and turns along the way to the big reveal. I never saw the killer as a suspect.

I was lucky enough to get to listen to the audio version of this book. Narrator Michelle Babb brings an already good cozy mystery to new heights. She is a natural storyteller. She brings each character to life, has wonderful timing and pace. I recommend getting the audio version if you can.

I voluntarily agreed to read a copy of this book that was supplied by the Narrator. All thoughts and opinions are my own and in no way have been influenced.

Great Story With Perfect Narrator

Blanche Day Manos has crafted another great mystery in her Darcy and Flora series. Darcy and Flora are a well crafted daughter and mother living in a small town in Oklahoma. They are well rounded characters who still have room to grow. Darcy's love interest Grant is the county sheriff and her high school sweetheart. Grant is slowly growing and becoming a more prominent character that will and can grow in future books. The plot is intriguing and has lots of twist and turns. The story keeps you interested to the very end.
Michelle Babb is the perfect narrator for this series. She brings Darcy and Flora to life. Her overall performance helps keep you listening to the end.
I highly recommend this great book. The perfect cozy for anytime of day.

Twists

I am starting to feel that I know all the regular characters quite well. I love the relationship between Darcy and her mother Flora along with all the neigbours. The pets even have a personality of their own. This was another cozy mystery that was very well narrated. Will there be others in the series? I hope so.

The longer I live, the more secrets I keep.

When her husband died, Darcy had moved back home to live with her mother and enjoy rest, peace and time to recover. Well, that didn't work. Instead, she was not only thrown into emotional confusion rediscovering feelings for the Marshall, her boyfriend before being romance by, and marrying, her much loved husband, but also murders and family secrets from the past have kept both her and her mother Flora involved in danger and discovery. Now, at last, they have moved into their newly built house outside of town, looking forward to countryside tranquility and the house warming party for their many friends and family. But it seems that even the weather is against them as a storm arrives with heavy rain which seems to go on for ever. And during the storm, someone knocks on their door. A stranger, but one who seems to know Flora by name and leaves just as suddenly as he arrived without giving his name. Next morning, the man's body is discovered outside the remains of a burning derelict building. Who is he? Who killed him? And it seems that, yet again, the son of Flora's best friend, Pat Harris, might well be involved.
This books in this series by Blanche Day Marcos are filled with interesting adventure and mystery and this one additionally continues with the background discoveries of the family past which combine to make an atmospheric story. But again, it is the delightful interaction between mother and daughter together with Darcy's internal consideration of all that is happening (the book is written from Darcy's perspective) which bind it together in a remarkably plausible way.

Good story, great characters and an excellent narrator: Michelle Babb further gives life to all of the protagonists and, in particular, Darcy and Flora. Her reading is a pleasure to hear and her voicings for the many protagonists is a good interpretation of each as well as being individually different.

These gentle thrillers still have bite even without fast, page turning action. They are gripping because the people are real, the stories well written and there is so much happening in that small town, from a long ago love, to murder, arson and a young woman trying to survive being thrown out by her father. And much more.
A good read.

Another good book

Another good book in the series. I did feel that it was a bit short, it could have been fleshed out a bit, but a good addition to the series.
