Publisher's Summary

Death and Wren bid on answers to the mysteries of love and war.

When former army medic Tony Dozier is accused of killing a member of the hate group that disrupted his wife's funeral, the prosecution charges premeditated murder, and the defense claims temporary insanity. Former marine Death Bogart and auctioneer Wren Morgan think there's more to the story.

They're both led to the long-abandoned Hadleigh House, where Wren begins preparing the contents for auction but ends up appraising the story behind an antique sketchbook. As Wren uncovers the century-old tale of a World War I soldier and his angel, Death finds a set of truths that will change...or end...their lives.

    "Bible verses throw down, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

I'm so glad I was listening to this when I wound up at the D.C. Veterans hospital ER! Everyone around me was kind of miserable, including myself. Then THE BIBLE VERSES THROW DOWN started and I began to laugh out loud so much, I covered my mouth and then the staff thought I was choking.
    Whew, got that out.
The story, the characters, the flow of the reader, I loved everything thing about this story.
Death and Wren are most definitely in love.
Keystone Brothers Auctions are still insane and Eric The Idiot still thinks he's got it going on but in this story he's still the idiot with not an ounce of anything going on other than stupidity.
    It never lagged, slowed down.
Oh, and the Bogart Brothers are killin' it, if horses don't kill these macho men first!

"I rarely give 5 stars--but this book deserves it"

I have read the first 2 books and felt it was a beginning to a nice series, but book 3 has raised the bar. With the wit and writing talent of Loretta Ross's, paired with Amanda Ronconi's snarky narration, this story is a must.

This series takes place in a backwater community in Missouri. Death Bogart, (private-eye and X marine) and Wren Morgan, (auctioneer), are dating (with thoughts of the future) now. Death, finds himself in a position to help an X soldier, who has been accused of murder; while Wren is packing up and inventorying a big old house for auction.

Here you will find new characters added as a multi layered story continues. You will be happy with the interactions, and plot as it unfolds.

Spoiler--OMG--the last scene of Chapter 9. And 2 quotes I will remember when I think of this book----"I think the Grandmas broke him!" AND "We always have made a good team, me and Doris. She calls down heaven and I raise hell." When you read this book, you will agree with me, with laughter accompanying.

"A clever mystery with character you will love"

Our characters are back in East Bledsoe Ferry, MO after the last installment and Wren Morgan is working at Hadleigh House inventorying the old abandoned home for auction. Here she finds an antique sketchbook. A man is found nearby dead and wearing a civil war uniform and a man named Tony Dozier, an army vet is arrested for killing a man that was protesting his wife’s funeral. Death (Dee-th) Bogart meets the man and knows right away he didn’t kill anyone. He has been asked by the defense attorney to help prove Tony is mentally unstable and unaware of his actions. Death sets out to prove Tony didn’t do it and catch a killer. The story that unfolds was interesting as our heroine finds herself in danger.

I am really enjoying this series, while not perfect, Ross does offer a nice balance between mystery, small-town character development and a healthy dose of humor. Ross addresses some serious issues such as PTSD and depression. Death a Marine Veteran left the services after sustaining a permanent injury that has damaged his lungs. He suffers PTSD, so much so that he won’t spend the entire night in Wren’s bed, fearful that he make experience an episode and harm her. This brings about bouts of depression and Ross had a firm grasp of what this entails. Tony an Army Vet suffers from blackouts, nightmares and flashback episodes.

So we have a few mysteries. Who is the owner of the antique sketchbook and where is the final art piece? What’s up with the dead man and the civil war uniform? Who killed the man Tony is accused of murdering. Themes and situations found within the story are relevant to events in the news, and I liked the subtle way these were mentioned. All of the threads soon became woven together and I quite enjoyed the solving of these mysteries.

Wren and Death’s romantic relationship continues to develop and we get to spend time with townsfolk, their families and become a part of the auction. Of course, we get plenty of laughter. There was a heated verbal exchange using biblical quotes that had me laughing so hard, I had to stop and wipe away tears. We get hints about things to come and a nice epilogue.

Amanda Ronconi once again narrates and is perfectly matched for Ross’s characters. She has become the voice of Death and Wren for me, and I hope she continues.

    "I adore this series"

Wren is a fabulous, original heroine, and her disabled combat vet beau is no slouch either. Ross successfully combines fun and smarts in this wonderful series. I can’t wait for the next book.

    "Fun as always"

This is a fun cozy mystery. If I could I would give it 4 and a half stars. The plot is interesting as always but it seemed a little too focused on Wren's and Death's romance than on the mystery. Overall, it's an enjoyable book and I look forward to the next one.

    "I'm Gushing. :D"

If you like a book with strong characters, mystery, relationships and realism, you'll love this series. It is one of those you'll enjoy just as much the next time; even when you know what's going going to happen. It has a richness and quality to it that brings to life the town and history and it's such a breathe of fresh air. The cover is really a terrible fit for this book and easily looked over. However, the voice of Ronconi is perfect and adds so much here to bring it to life. I could go on gushing, so I'll stop now and just say... It's a hidden gem and I can't wait for more of her books!!!
