What the Critics Say

"Hall packs a punch with this one and the ending left me gasping." (For the Love of Books)
"A gripping psychological thriller with a level of tension that will leave you breathless." (Tracy Book Lover)
"It is disturbing and chilling. It feels very real. And a quick mention for that twist! I did not see that coming at all. I usually spot these things and I didn't! Clever! Very clever!" (Northern Crime Reviews)

    Story
"Never Mind the Twist - read it because it's good."

Within the first few minutes of listening to the well-narrated Between You and Me, the author makes these things very clear: 1) I am meant to know that Sal and Charlie's marriage is abusive- one partner suffers domestic violence at the other's hands; and 2) our androgynously-named partners are not "him" and "her" or "him and him" or "her and her"- they are, and shall remain, "Sal" and "Charlie." (Later, there will be an "Alex" inserted into the plot, but Alex will not be helpful, because Alex is also genderless).

I almost hit stop and delete. But I didn't. Because Lisa Hall has a way of writing simple, straightforward, punchy sentences that turn into thoughtful paragraphs that demonstrate exactly what is happening, let the reader feel the emotion, insert the pain and anger, or the triumph and the sense of such strong feeling for a character- that the reader moves with the story. You're just there. You are in the kitchen with Sal, you are in the office with Charlie. The story goes and moves and kills you and picks you up and makes you keep your wits about you because you need them, because you will experience some intense emotions from beginning to end. It is not maudlin, it is not overwrought, it is not a soap opera. You may think you know the twist, but you don't know all the twists.

The story is told from the points of view of Sal and Charlie back and forth throughout, in a contemporaneous manner that is very interesting to experience. There are some look-backs to show the history of the relationship, but no more than needed to demonstrate the points to the reader. Same as the rest of the book. The less-AS-more approach just really worked for me with this story.

In the end, I think Between You and Me was a great read. Certainly, suspense enough to satisfy, and psychologically a mindbender. This is a worthy, well-written book, and I recommend it.

"Good story but confussing at the end"
Would you listen to another book narrated by Jessica Ball?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

During the last couple of chapters when it was titled "Charlie" during those narratives Charlie referred to Sal as a "he" - referred to Alex as a "he". That all started during the stabbing at the end of the book. This caused a lot of confusion for me. Other than that it was an interesting story and I enjoyed how it was written

This story was hard to follow. The characters kept switching from the first person to 2nd person in the narrative and also kept switching narratives between characters. All through the story I thought that ins character was the wife and the other the husband. At the end they revealed that it was the opposite, which had no bearing on the story. It was just confusing and took away from the plot and the ending.

"Great up to Ch 38, then CONFUSED"

The character names can obvi go for either gender... in pretty sure it was SHE (sal) and HE (charlie) TILL ch 38- then at that point, was totally flipped. Other than that GREAT story. Just a tad bit confused still...😐

I kept listening to make sure I wasn't missing something great. Waste of time. Definitely wouldn't classify it as a psychological thriller for the reader.

    "Amazing until the end"

I was captivated by this book. I loved the storyline, the performance, the structure of how it flipped from perspective, but 2 chapters before the end, they story flipped... the husband suddenly became the wife and vice Versa. I was so confused. Totally ruined the book for me. Aside from that, the book was amazing. Now I can't even recommend it. Feeling like a just broke up with someone haha. It was great while it lasted and then without warning, it went wrong.

    "Not a happy listening"

Confusing names of Characters- all unisex names like Sal and Charlie and Alex so as an audio book wasn't sure if it was a gay couple at first . Did not enjoy listening to the bitching all the way through the book

    "Great twist"

Really enjoyed this book and didn't expect the ending, although at one point I did suspect something wasn't as it seemed. Agree that narrator could have varied voice a bit however without spoiling it for others I think it was best as it was.

A real twist at the end concluded a fantastic story. I emphasised with the main character - well I thought I did. Can't recommend this book enough

"Not sure I can finish this as an audiobook"

The idea is promising, the subject uncomfortable, but the reader, although well spoken and well paced, does not provide sufficient variation between the male and female characters. Sadly, Jessica Bell needs better acting skills as it is very difficult to recognise which character is actually speaking. This is a book for reading from the printed page.
