"Hall packs a punch with this one and the ending left me gasping." ( For the Love of Books)
"A gripping psychological thriller with a level of tension that will leave you breathless." (Tracy Book Lover)
"It is disturbing and chilling. It feels very real. And a quick mention for that twist! I did not see that coming at all. I usually spot these things and I didn't! Clever! Very clever!" ( Northern Crime Reviews)

Never Mind the Twist - read it because it's good.

Within the first few minutes of listening to the well-narrated Between You and Me, the author makes these things very clear: 1) I am meant to know that Sal and Charlie's marriage is abusive- one partner suffers domestic violence at the other's hands; and 2) our androgynously-named partners are not "him" and "her" or "him and him" or "her and her"- they are, and shall remain, "Sal" and "Charlie." (Later, there will be an "Alex" inserted into the plot, but Alex will not be helpful, because Alex is also genderless).

I almost hit stop and delete. But I didn't. Because Lisa Hall has a way of writing simple, straightforward, punchy sentences that turn into thoughtful paragraphs that demonstrate exactly what is happening, let the reader feel the emotion, insert the pain and anger, or the triumph and the sense of such strong feeling for a character- that the reader moves with the story. You're just there. You are in the kitchen with Sal, you are in the office with Charlie. The story goes and moves and kills you and picks you up and makes you keep your wits about you because you need them, because you will experience some intense emotions from beginning to end. It is not maudlin, it is not overwrought, it is not a soap opera. You may think you know the twist, but you don't know all the twists.

The story is told from the points of view of Sal and Charlie back and forth throughout, in a contemporaneous manner that is very interesting to experience. There are some look-backs to show the history of the relationship, but no more than needed to demonstrate the points to the reader. Same as the rest of the book. The less-AS-more approach just really worked for me with this story.

In the end, I think Between You and Me was a great read. Certainly, suspense enough to satisfy, and psychologically a mindbender. This is a worthy, well-written book, and I recommend it.

False Title (no spoilers)

This book was absolutely NOT a psychological thriller in any way, shape, or form. This is a story about an abusive relationship. It is told in alternating voices from both the husband's and wife's point of view. As for the "twist" at the end, frankly I didn't see it as a twist because it didn't affect the plot in any way. Very disappointing! This would be better characterized as "chick lit". Just a story of an abusive relationship. It's not a terrible book but I was looking for a thriller and this is NOT one.

Great, until the ending

I loved the book and had great expectations for how it would conclude, but I truly hated the ending.

Ugh, just skip it

The whole surprise wasn't a surprise at all. Just a boring dance around something I guessed in the first chapter

Good until the end

I think they messed up on the ending... I was so confused.... there's no way I would be able to read this again, I already had to listen to the ending three times to figure out what and who they were talking about

boring and predictable

They said there is a twist in the end but you pretty much figure it out by chapter 3 I didn't like this book at all.

Between You And Me Is An Insult to My Intelligence

I am angry. I am angry that I took the time to listen to a 'psychological thriller' that had no thrills and no surprises.

I figured out the situation in the first few chapters.

Things aren't always as they seem, true- but this book glares with obviousness. The narrator tries to trick you with her voice inflection.

This story is an insult to the intelligence of readers and listeners. Don't waste a credit.

Great twist

Really enjoyed this book and didn't expect the ending, although at one point I did suspect something wasn't as it seemed. Agree that narrator could have varied voice a bit however without spoiling it for others I think it was best as it was.

Best twist ever

Loved this book and had me thinking about it long after I'd finished. Didn't see the twist coming at all. Jessica ball does a great job narrating too.

Wow!!

Excellent book! I did not see that twist coming!! I almost feel the need to read it again to find any subtle hints.

Well read, well written and one of the best books I have read.

Well I saw it coming from Chapter One, but ...

Spoiler alert - I can't see how anyone would no,t realise what was happening. The way it was written in third party etc. However, a very, very good book. Some of the scenes are somewhat graphic, so not for the faint-hearted. Enjoyed it very uch.

a bit of a silly twist

Initially the twist came as a big surprise and I thought WOW! However, on reflection, I decided that the story was a bit silly. Without wanting to give anything away, this story would be a 5-star effort, if one doesn't look back and analyse the plot. I gave it a thorough post mortem and it came up a bit short. Sorry!

Glaringly Obvious Ending From Chapter 1

What disappointed you about Between You and Me?

Persevered to the bitter end. After the hype promising a 'twist you won't see coming' I just couldn't believe it would be so totally obvious from the beginning. Not sure about it being a thriller either.

Any additional comments?

Disappointing

Don't waste 7 hrs 16 mins

This is a repetitive dull book, sadly enhanced by appalling narration. It's not subtle although it tries desperately to be so. The 'surprise' twist at the end is handled badly, being clunky and rushed. In the realms of cost to buy it is relatively cheap, but unfortunately reads in the same way.

Not Sure

It was an original twist on domestic violence and a story which is not often told. However it lacked tension and was in parts unnecessarily repetitive. Lacked sophistication. But hey I stuck with it despite a conclusion which was far too obvious. The writer clearly has it in her to deliver and this did smack of a first novel.
