Publisher's summary

The living seek forgiveness. The dead seek revenge.

Armed with a sinful past and an equally sinful body, Jackson Knight absolves his vow of celibacy to pursue Sergeant Monaghan’s unsuspecting older housekeeper.

Ryn Middleton, on the cusp of turning 40,with a snarky daughter, a killer dog, and an abusive ex-husband, finds Jackson’s advances humorous and unbelievable. After intense negotiations including Vera Wang, Ed Sheeran, and sex four times a day, Ryn accepts Jackson’s marriage proposal on their first date.

What could possibly go wrong?

While struggling to lay claim to the woman of the dreams he never had, Jackson is forced to deal with a grief-stricken Jillian trying to hold on to her past without letting go of her future - the doctor who took her heart and the sergeant who gave her a new one.

Beyond the hope for light, lies the middle of darkness, the illusion of truth, and a haunting past.

A first love. A last breath. A haunting past. This is the second book in the Jack & Jill Series, and not a stand-alone.

4 stars

OK first off Jackson and Ryn's story I could care less about. Ryn was so annoying and Im not into OWYM tropes. I do think this was a bit longer than it should be but of course Jewel knows how to write a sad story.

I still loved Stefanie's narration.

Romance, Suspense and Passion!

“I don’t think there are enough stars in the sky to count how many times a day I fall in love with you all over again.”

I knew my heart was in for one heck of a ride and boy was I right! This story is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, again switching from past and present, splitting my heart open. In book two we get more from our broken bad boy Jackson Knight, his soft heart towards his sister told me there was hope for him finally finding a woman to make him believe in love again. It wouldn’t seem Ryn Middleton would be the woman for the job with her tragic history of abuse, physical and otherwise but her experiences gave her the ability to love a man with a past as messy as hers. 10 years older than him, her lack of confidence in her beauty and ability to have a man crave her is so dang relatable. Her imperfections make her beautiful just like Jackson’s past makes him the passionate albeit reckless man he is.

“Love is reckless because true emotions are immune to logic. The most beautiful love stories are often the most tragic.”

And gahhhh - this book BROKE me with Jillian and AJ and the utter devastation of his circumstances. I’ll applaud Jewel again for her ability to have me love so many characters all at once and see their need for each of them in Jillian’s life. Luke continued to steal my heart but my love for AJ was just a strong. Jillian/Jessica’s love and passion is still what makes this an unforgettable series for me.

Two Words : Cloth Napkins

“Love was not a problem to solve or a choice to make, simply an involuntary feeling that explained human existence.”

I’m not normally one to cry listening to an audiobook but you better believe I cried twice during this book.

Not as good as book 1

I liked the first book, but the cliffhanger made it necessary to buy this one, too. This one was pretty slow -- very repetitious in the middle with the constant "I'm older than you" obsession. And the narrator's voice for the cleaning lady character was over the top irritating.
