Publisher's Summary

Colin and Joshua faced the most harrowing ordeal of their lives with love and courage. Believing they'd survived their trial, they looked forward to a future filled with happiness, only to discover that the worst was yet to come. Sometimes, surviving is the toughest trial of all.

When you face the worst that can be faced and emerge from your ordeal with your life and love still intact, it's natural to breathe a sigh of relief and thank god that your suffering is behind you. But the aftermath of Colin and Joshua’s ordeal presented them with challenges deadlier to their relationship than death itself.

For a powerful, athletic alpha male, being unable to even go to the bathroom without help is a crushing blow. Pride and ego combine to do what a bullet could not - destroy the relationship that Colin and Joshua share and that they both cherish.

For a trained psychologist like Joshua, dealing with the emotional aftermath of his partner’s injuries should have been second nature. But memories of his own abused and neglected childhood rose to the surface with frightening force, shattering his ability to confront their issues in a healthy manner.

They didn't want it to be that way. Both of them knew they were wrong in how they were handling the pain of Colin's recovery. Colin hid behind his colossal pride. Humiliated by his infirmity and too proud to admit that he needed help and comfort, he hid his feelings behind a mask. While fearful of Colin’s rejection and ultimate abandonment, Joshua hid in his room, unable to confront his partner and demand that they both get the help they needed.

The toughest trials are those that pit you against yourself. Colin and Josh must find their best, truest selves if they are to save the love they cherish and find the healing they seek in each other’s arms.

This is a story of love’s trials and its ultimate triumphs.

This is the second book in the Revolutionary Heart series. In the first, Love’s Magic, Colin and Joshua meet and find the magic that binds their souls together. But the magic that bound their hearts together couldn't save them from the trial that shattered their world. This book will break your heart, then mend it again. The passion is hot, and the love is unquenchable. Walk with Colin and Joshua as they journey through their dark night of the soul to their ultimate happily ever after.

Please note: This book can be listened to as a stand-alone, but it will have more meaning if you've also read or listened to Love's Magic, which is where their relationship begins.

Enjoyed it!

Wow, this audiobook was excellent! I love Colin and Joshua and their story just breaks my heart...but then you have some hopefulness...just a lovely novel! I enjoyed the narrator as well but I thought he needed some enunciation in some areas.

Caring someone you love is the greatest joy

Ah .. the story continues for Joshua and Collin. I have loved listening to their story in “Love’s Magic” so I’m glad to get more of their story in this book.

Nate and David, Joshua and Collin had to fight tooth and nails for their happily ever after. But sometimes, they live happily ever after is not the end. The reality is harsher than fairy tales and even true live has to go through several trials. And such is the case for Joshua and Collin. This story is very real and much more realistic than most romance stories and the author wasn’t afraid to go there. Colin was shot and I was totally shattered for his safety and well-being and the recovery took up quite a lot of the story. And getting recovered mind and soul from this trauma was even more difficult than getting shit. Having to go through hell quite a long time, my heart aches for both Joshua and Colin. Both men are headstrong and determined, they are so set on not losing each other that they were actually hurting each other without even noticing. This was really angsty and at times I was worried that I won’t get my final happily ever after. Thank his I got that. Again, Walker Williams did a terrific job marrying this story. I really enjoyed it.

Heartrending yet hopeful... 4.5 stars!

Love's Trials by Janice Jarrell and narrated by Walker Williams continues the story of Colin and Joshua. This second book in the Revolutionary Heart series was truly a heartrending one to listen to, but it also had that feeling of hope that everything would work out for the main characters. These two were trying to adjust to their new normal, and naturally, with a relationship as new as theirs, that was far easier said than done. Nate and David, who shared top billing as main characters in the first book, Love's Magic, are back as supporting characters here and I liked seeing how far they had come as a couple. Jarrell continues to impress, as does Williams, and I certainly wouldn't say "no" to listening to more from these two. 4.5 stars for Love's Trials. ♥

Heartbreaking but wonderful meeting old friends

I was very happy to get more time with Joshua, Colin, Nate and David. Just as the author had clearly done her homework in the first book of the series to get the university life right, Jarrell has clearly done the homework here to get the details right about the emotional upheavals that occur after a devastating injury. Colin's and Josua's reactions are complicated, understandable, irritating and hearbreaking all at once. You will at various times love and hate both of them because just as in book one, you completely buy them as real people and what they are dealing with is never black and white, but always shades of grey. I was so happy at the ending! This HEA is extremely deserved and very hard earned. I also loved seeing Nate and David again, learning how their relationship has developed and watching them support and love Colin and Joshua. The narrator is still rather problematic for me. He requires my sustained attention to catch all the words and I would have like more variation in tone and affect than I got here.

A Weill Written & Emotional Story

This is the second book in The Revolutionary Heart Series. An emotional and compelling book. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters good. The characters were developed and thought out. Nate & David were secondary characters and Colin & Joshua are the MC’s of this book. Communication is even more important than ever in this book. The narration was good and enjoyable. I can recommend this book as a good read/listen. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.

Trials indeed

Josh and Colin goes through a lot of challenges, how will their relationship survive....
I loved this emotional story, it made me laugh and cry and I was pulled in to the story from the beginning.
No unnecessary descriptions of surroundings
Good dialogues
Well written characters with individual personalities that spoke to me.
The storyline progresses nicely to a good ending

Narrator:
Excellent narrator, clear pronunciation and read with feelings.
I did however feel that the attempts at making a different voice for each character wasn’t always successful, but that didn’t take away from the good experience

Great continuation.

This is a great continuation of this series. I do like this one is more focused on Colin and Joshua's story. This one is definitely an emotional one. Seeing how after a tragedy how these two characters are there for each other definitely had my tissues at the ready. Like I had said with the first story this has such a real feel to it. Then Walker Williams brings these emotions even more into the story and I just feel every one of the emotions. Great story.

Just grabbed me

The second part of this review is what I wrote after reading the book. Now I had the opportunity to listen to it and if possible I feel stronger about the emotion in this book. The narrator, Walker Williams, added life to the story. I also had time to actually pick up on some of the things I had missed the first time and let me say it’s my opinion this author has a raw gift for story telling. I read/listen to a lot of books and there are plenty of good author’s but while most of these tell a good story it is a few that can not only tell a great story but they know how to describe the surrounding, people and emotions. This is one of those authors. This series is one of those that I remember and when people ask for recommendations these are right in my mind. The next part is my original opinion of the story I read and I still feel this.

I recently found this author and I sit fretting over writing the review for this series. I’m a reader and my skills at writing are next to none. Yet I hope someone will come away from my reviews of the books in this series wanting to read them. I am so glad I had the books from the series when I started. I’m not a patient person and once I started these I had to keep reading. There is so much emotion to this series. This book is a continuation of the story in Love’s Magic. I read a lot of books and this author is one of the few who can bring me right in the story. Her characters are so real. The situations so well described. The emotions written so well that I felt a little of what they were going through. I love how Colin is not only strong but also has a softer side. I enjoy that he is Irish and it plays so much into the story. The flow of the story is consistent and held my complete attention. I also have to say the covers for these stories are perfect. The characters and the pictures on the covers completely fit.

Amazing and deeply moving

"Love's Trials" is the second volume of the "Revolutionary Heart" series by Janice Jarrell and one of its best parts. The continuation of our favorite characters' love story the author tells us this time is without doubt extremely interesting, emotional, moving, beautiful and dramatic, but above all it's real. "Love's Trials" wasn't born in the author's head, but in her heart, and the reader really feels it. What's more, Janice Jarrell gives us insight into Collin's psyche and at the same time she gives us a chance to look at the physical and, what's the most important, psychological problems many seriously injured police officers are facing. When reading this novel, we don't run away from the world and the real people who surround us, but we have the opportunity to explore their problems, get to know them better, try to understand them. Thanks to all this, they become closer to us.

Above, I briefly mentioned the advantages of the story presented in "Love's Trials", but I would like to devote a little more attention to the topic of emotions. The story which the author tells us in this volume focuses precisely on them. Believe me, in this book we find a huge range of emotions and feelings, both positive and negative. However, most importantly, many of them can be described as beautiful or violent, which undoubtedly affects our perception of this book. "Love's Trials" focuses not only on the feelings of the characters, but also on those of the listener. We feel this story with every molecule of our bodies and our soul. So I must warn you that when we're listening to it, we cry so hard that we need lots of tissues and at least an hour to calm down. What's more, the heartache we feel is very real.

As for the characters, I admit that the author creates them in a really perfect way. She allows us to get to know them better from all angles, but puts the greatest emphasis on their hearts, souls, and in the case of the main ones on their love for one another. In "Love's Trials" we don't really see a group of friends, but a family within which blood ties don't matter. I think it is also worth noting that the novel introduces completely new characters, whose role in this volume is enormous, and which also influence us and arouse very different feelings, which is another advantage of "Love's Trials".

As in this case I'm reviewing an audiobook, I'd like to write a few words about the narrator. I admit that Walker Williams, who reads this novel, did a really great job. Let's start with the fact that he has a nice, expressive voice, which in itself is a huge advantage, because it makes the time we spent listening to the novel even more enjoyable, and remember it takes more than nine hours to finish this book. What's more, the narrator really feels the text he reads, he reflects the personality of individual characters and differentiates them by using various pace and accents, modifying the tone of his voice as far as possible. So we can say that Walker Williams gives "Love's Trials" an extra dimension, thanks to which the listener feels the novel even deeper.

To sum up, "Love's Trials" is a novel filled with emotions, beautiful and dramatic, which you must read. With this story Janice Jarrell undoubtedly conquers our hearts and makes us cry. Believe me, you will never forget this book and you will love it with all your heart.

Highly emotional with lots of angst

Loved this story full of emotion, angst, drama, understanding, realization, thankfulness, friendship, and love. Love the characters.

Colin and Joshua have a great relationship, full of love, until tragedy strikes. Colin is shot and the pain and uncertainty of his injury cause him to push Joshua away. Joshua suffers greatly at the rejection, and their relationship is nearly destroyed.

The author does such an excellent job of painting realistic emotions and reactions, and the characters are so realistic that I couldn't help mourning with them through their pain, cheering for their victories, and rooting for an HEA future.

I loved the great friendship and support provided by David and Nate. It was great to see them play such an instrumental role.

The narration is good, although sometimes I couldn't tell which man was speaking. It didn't detract from my overall understanding and enjoyment of the story.

I received a complimentary copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

A roller-coaster of reality, truth, love & healing

🌟🌟🌟🌟 4.5 stars
🔥🔥🔥 Heat Level: 3.75

Another emotional roller-coaster of reality, truth, love, and heartache!

Janice has a talent for such raw and real emotions that go beyond the story and settle in your heart. I loved Colin and Josh from book 1 and loved the chance to revisit them again. I really liked Janice’s approach to this story and how this fits with reality! Colin and Josh may have faced death but the story, pain, and struggles, was only just beginning, and this is so true of real life. It’s refreshing to find a story that doesn’t shy away from the harsh realities of life!

Colin and Josh face a major milestone in their relationship that goes beyond Colin surviving getting shot. This story follows the aftermath of a chaotic and dangerous case that challenges the foundations of Colin and Josh’s relationship. It was so raw and real, my heart broke with the characters as they drifted apart and faced the harsh reality of Colin’s injury and what his recovery would mean for both of them.

This is a truly realistic journey of heartache, recovery, vulnerability, and healing, and reflects the truth that you have to work at a relationship and it’s not all hearts, rainbows, and happy endings! Colin’s and Josh’s journey is hard but seeing them fight tooth and nail for each other, even while hurting is harrowing. Janice, you’ve created a truly real and beautiful story. I loved all these characters and can’t wait for more. (Trent’s story please 😉 )

Thanks for reading!

High emotion, narrated well

Writing this review the next day and I'm still recovering! The emotional turmoil that the characters go through, especially in the second half of the book, is just so heartbreaking. You know it's a great book when you're sat reading and shouting at the characters of the book to get their acts together.
Janice has written the two main characters so very well. Colin and Joshua got together in book one of the series are now sharing their lives and living together. Colons job as a campus police office becomes more intense though when drugs become more prolific on site and he's asked to help with the investigation. The outcome has drastic effects of both men, both physical and mental and we get to follow them on their journey together and how much strength it takes to stay with the person you live through the tough times.
All of the emotions and actions that you read feel so real! And engaging! I cried on several occasions and I'm so glad I read this book! I didn't think it could have beaten how highly I thought of book one but, to me, this story takes us to the next level and I was fully immersed from beginning to end!
I cannot recommend this book and series enough!
Walker Williams does a fantastic job in narrating such an emotional story. With both MC's experiencing such lows, I really felt what Walker was voicing for Colin and Joshua. I was drawn straight into the story from the start where we rejoin Colin and Joshua as they are living together, continuing on from book 1. Walker's individual character voices have improved from Love's Magic but, again, I struggled when we switch characters mid chapter and I wouldn't know until I noticed that the POV had changed. Maybe a little variation in tone/pitch could help with that?

An Emotional Rollercoaster

Love’s Trials follows on from the first book in the Revolutionary Hearts Series by Janice Jarrell.
Colin and Joshua met and got together in the first book, and are now living together happily until Colin is injured in the line of duty. Colins feelings of helplessness and low self esteem after the injury cause problems in the relationship and bring back memories of Joshua’s own childhood, forcing a rift between the two men when it should bring them together.
This is an extremely emotional read with the author tearing you down then rebuilding you up again piece by piece! Excellent!

One of my favorite couples

I loved Love’s Magic and was happy to hear Love’s Trials was coming out on audio. Needless to say, I snapped it up. In the first book I always felt Colin and Joshua were the secondary couple. They were given as much time as David and Nathan, but because they were introduced second, I never quite connected with them the same way. Fortunately I got a second chance to get to know them in this book.

In the first book, when I realized the book was set in Charlottesville, my immediate thought was the violent and deadly Unite the Right march. When it wasn’t mentioned in the book, I wondered if perhaps the book had been written before the rally, or if it wasn’t going to be an issue. Those questions were answered in this second book where the march does come up. Colin is an Irish cop. Since his sister’s death, he’s wanted to be a cop so he can ensure the guilty are punished. As a campus police officer, he’s straddling the line between caring for victims and nabbing perpetrators. In the last book the focus was on assault, specifically sexual assault. This book digs into drugs and their very real impact on campuses.

Between the rally and his work trying to take down a drug kingpin, Colin is busy. Joshua is understanding, though. He’s got his own counselling practice and he’s completely supportive of Colin’s career choice.

Until everything goes horribly wrong.

Man, this book made my heart hurt. When Colin was shot, I was stunned and was gripped by the worry for his safety. He survived, but the recovery takes up a lot of space in this book and I liked that. This is the story of what happens after the crisis. What life looks like when the attention and spotlight are gone. How two people fix what has been so badly broken.

Now, these are two intelligent men. Both can see that Colin’s injury is serious and life-altering. As a counselor, Joshua knows all the signs to watch out for and yet, when the rubber hits the road, he gives up. He acquiesces to Colin and let Colin run roughshod over him. And Colin knows what he’s doing is destructive and wrong, but he’s so obsessed with getting back to where he was that he doesn’t realize he’s going to lose the most important thing in his life.

Man, I wanted to knock their heads together to see if any sense could be shaken loose. And yet as frustrated as I was, I recognized that this was real life. Tragedy can either bring people together or it can tear them apart. I knew which one I preferred but I wasn’t convinced I would get my way. In the end, though, I got my happy ending.

The turbulence of emotion that I was put through is, to me, the sign of a good book. Make me work for it and I’m all in. This author weaves a compelling tale with very simple story lines chocked full of emotional highs and lows. In other words, a great book.
