Story
It's been a long 17 years but Herschel Wood, Jr., is finally a free man and he's looking forward to reconnecting with his old cellmate, Bishop Stockley, who promised him a place to stay and some help getting back on his feet. Trent Armstrong has never been considered a catch. He's a 29-year-old laborer, an ex-con, and not the easiest person to get along with. He's used to being the one people cast to the side when they're done with him. Everyone he's ever cared about has walked out of his life without a backward glance, so he's used to the loneliness.

Story
From high school up until he became a successful attorney, Jacob Snowden was convinced that love had it out for him. "Everyone left" were the words he lived by. His mother, his high school sweetheart, his father, and his fiancé - they all left Jacob just when he felt it was safe to let down his guard. Not any longer. Jacob was a determined man, set at keeping people at a distance. If his six-foot-one, military-made body didn't scare people off, his permanent scowl surely did.

I don’t want Jason Vega. Not at all. It’s the worst idea ever. Ah, hell... Jason is handsome. Smart. Dangerous. Hot. He’s goddamn gorgeous - but he’s also sleeping on the street, hanging out with the local biker gang, and selling his body for a living. Our lives, our paths, couldn’t be further apart. I’m crawling toward the light while he’s falling into the dark. But it doesn’t matter how different we are or what logic dictates.

I’m a man with too many secrets, so the last thing I need is a new roommate with a sexy smile and blue eyes that see right through me. Eight years ago, Roderick left town after high school. We’re not friends. I owe him nothing. But back then, I let one of my secrets slip, and he’s the only one who noticed. Part of me knows I should run far, far away. But the other part wants him to come upstairs and spend the night. But if I let him in, I could lose everything.

I've been in love with my best friend since forever. Okay, fine. Like, kindergarten. It started out platonic, obviously, but then became.... Nope. Still platonic. The problem is that Parker Ellis has been straight since forever. And that makes it difficult to convince him that the two of us are meant to be together. And now, there's no point. All is lost. He's gone and gotten engaged to his high-school sweetheart - which means I have to grin and bear it, while pretending to be the happy, supportive best man, while he prepares to commit his life to a woman.

It started out as a little fun. When there was a man in my building on a hookup app, why not message him? Only we didn’t meet. We just texted - one night after the other, after the other. GoodWithHisHands was the perfect escape from my life, where pressure was always on my shoulders: my father’s expectations, the worry about my sister, Maddy, getting sick again, and her ex-husband, Ryder Lynwood, suddenly back and volunteering at the same hospital as me. I like talking to him, the same way I enjoy chatting with GoodWithHisHands. They weren’t supposed to be the same person.

My new stepbrother is insufferable. You'd think it wouldn't matter since I won't be here for long, but this guy gets under my skin like no one ever has. All-American, baby-faced, blue-eyed band dork and star soccer player. Everything about him is the picture of perfection—unlike me. I don't think Do Gooder knows I'm starting senior year late. And he definitely doesn't know why. I've got secrets I'm taking with me to the grave.

I spent college worrying about responsibilities and earning my teaching degree, so before graduation and moving to Atlanta with my best friend, Ross, I figure I deserve a little fun. I’ve never been with an older man, but the guy at the bar grabs my attention and doesn’t let go…for multiple rounds, all night long. The next day, when Ross introduces me to his dad, the last thing I expect is for him to be my hookup from the night before, in town from Atlanta for his son’s graduation. The best thing would be to pretend it never happened, which is easier said than done.

"Look out for Zach, and don't hit on him." My brother's request sounds easy enough. Keep an eye out for his best friend on campus and keep my hands to myself. Easy. Even if Zach is a quintessential nerd, who I've always thought was cute, I don't have the time to think with my...stick. There's only one stick I should be focused on this year, and that's my hockey stick. My goal once I graduate is to get an NHL contract. The last thing I need is a distraction. On or off the ice. Only, keeping to the rules is harder than I thought it would be.

The job at Sunday Orchard was supposed to be temporary. A chance to gain some work experience, to have some fun. I had not expected to be welcomed into a family of gorgeous and weirdly efficient lumberjack-types, or to find purpose in the tiny Vermont town whose claim to fame seemed to be apple-based products and copious amounts of charm. And I most definitely hadn’t expected to fall for Knox Sunday, my grumpy, burly, fifteen-years-older, reluctant roommate, with his infuriating lectures, his hot-as-fire body, his superior attitude - I’ve never been one to put down roots.

Kind, caring, and protective. Those are the three qualities I’m looking for when it comes to my dream man. In a city as big as Chicago, you wouldn’t think he would be that hard to find, right? Wrong. Sure, my boss found a super-sexy detective and my best friend fell madly in love with the most eligible bachelor around. But the only person I’ve met recently is a broody bad boy who saved me at a sketchy pub. He’s grumpy, rude, and honestly, not that likeable at all. Hardly my “dream” guy. So why can’t I stop thinking about him?

When I left that night, I had every intention of coming back to you. To us. But no matter how hard I wish for what I want, there are some things in life that aren't meant to be. I don't expect you to understand. You've already moved on, living your life. But mine ended that night, nine years ago, and I still can't let you go. Not sure I ever will. I regret so many things, but hurting you, I'll never forgive myself. I'm sorry for...everything.

Publisher's Summary
At only 32, Bishop Stockley has lived a hard-knock life. After doing five years in a federal prison, Bishop is back at his dad's trailer and working for his landscaping company, thrust into a legit world where he's no longer the alpha - a world where a criminal record is the least of his disadvantages, because Bishop can't read or write.
Bishop already had the deck stacked against him, but he wasn't afraid of hard work to change his situation, and he did want to change. Especially after he encountered Edison Scala, a kind-spirited office manager who didn't hesitate to come to his defense...a man that saw past Bishop's grass-stained coveralls. A man who wasn't intimidated by his stern features and his silence.
Bishop knew Edison was off-limits. He'd made personal vows to himself when he was released from prison, ones that he never intended to break. But, when Edison asked him about providing landscaping services at his home, there was no way he could refuse. He hadn't expected Edison to feed him, praise him, encourage him, and look at him the way he did - as if Bishop was somebody.
Contains mature themes.

Amazing.
Loved the story. The slow burn of the relationship build between Bishop and Edison reminds of a summer morning in Georgia. Beautifully done, A. E. Via. Tor, as always, delivers. Love that voice. And yes, he made this Southern Belle blush.

A good slow burn!
Bishop has had it tough and now out of jail, he is ready to start his life. Landscaping is his thing, he is an artist of sorts. When Edison approaches him to do some work at his home, Bishop is immediately attracted to him. But with his past, his secrets and his blue collar life style, he thinks Edison is off limits. Edison is the one though that can see through the gruffness. But can it be more than just a fling? And if not, Bishop won't let it happen. This is my first A. E. Via book, and boy can she write! This slow burn story had me listening, just so I could see what would happen next. It's not overly angsty or steamy, but it has a real truth to it. One that keeps you listening. It invests your heart, and your soul. It keeps you cheering for the underdog and wanting to beat down the bully. It's a true love story that will pass the tests and find your heart.
This type of story needs a narrator with many talents. First, being MM, it needs an alpha voice. Tor Thom brings it. His deep baritone is perfect as Bishop. And he immediately shifts to Edison, the more passive of the two. Next, this book is very emotional, and Thom enhances every aspect of the story with his ability to give the inflections and feelings in his voice to let us feel both sides of this couple. And lastly, it needs heat and passion, and there is none better for this task. Thom is an outstanding storyteller and truly brings the best out in this narration.

A slow burn that is worth the wait
Bishop is fresh out of jail and trying hard to change his life. Raised by his young father, Bishop's only family was a gang, he knew the streets well. Edison was raised by his father as well, but was taught true life lessons. Ones that every man should be taught. Opposites attract and when Bishop landscapes for Edison, interests are peaked. Bishop thinks Edison is off limits and he is trying to live by the rules he set for himself when he left jail. We all know that never works, and these two are drawn together. I had to keep listening, I could not stop. There was so much hope in my heart for these two, I had to know the outcome. This was slow burn, but the depth of characters that was built was well worth it. each time a little more was revealed, I was hooked again.
Tor Thom is the perfect narrator for this story. His deep voice will make anyone swoon. Tor really brought these two to life. Tor Thom is able to keep all the characters distinct and easy to follow, I found myself lost in his narration and it was as if I were within the pages of the book. Tor Thom's narration added to the experience of this story. This is a must listen!

Slow Burn
Bishop by A. E. Via came across my radar due to the narrator. Tor Thom is incredibly talented with his distinguishable voices he gives the characters. The emotions he injects brings the characters to life. MM books are outside my typical "go-to" listen preference, but this one was well written and the narration top notch.

Loved this book! Narration is perfect.
The story is heart tugging and beautiful I have it in all three formats.
Narration is perfect smooth and husky with just enough emotion to really feel the character's personality.
Only one criticism is the same in the paperback and kindle version which is a few character name mistakes with Edison and Bishop but it's well worth it for a story this good!

Story: An ex-con and a young executive with totally different personalities, and off the charts chemistry. AE Via is a master of creating unique characters and this book was no exception in this regard. I really liked all the peope, both the MCs and secondary ones! The story itself included some interesting twists and turns that kept me interested throughout.
Narration: Great voice! I liked the performance a lot. It was easy to follow and the differentiation of voices was really well done!

amazing
as with the Nothing Special series the characters in this book are deep and multifaceted. Bishop who believes himself stupid but is not and Edison bright as a star. both lonely, in many ways the polar opposite of each other in upbringing, but their connection is true and perhaps their worst enemies are not the ex or colleagues but their own insecurities. loved it can't wait to read the next in the series.

Really enjoyable.
Really liked the story and made me laugh on many occasions. Skylar was an interesting character and Bishop just made me melt he is such a big teddybear. Narration was really good except sometimes the female voices sounded the drag queens. Whilst the men just sounded hot. Thanks Great read.

Great story
The story is great. The narration was very average and almost had me not completing the book.
