Publisher's summary

When a group of six life-long friends learn that a member of their circle has been brutally attacked and left for dead, they're certain that it's connected to a crime they committed years ago. Although the five remaining friends are the logical suspects in the attack, things might not be what they seem. Is group patriarch and legitimate genius Max Mason behind it all, or are other forces at play? What starts as a mystery, quickly turns into a psychological thriller, before culminating into a full-on quest for revenge. Kings and Concubines takes the listener on a fast paced journey for truth and teaches the importance of being a wolf among a society of lap-dogs.

Not what I was expecting but fun+well put together

So this book wasn't what I expected. I honestly had been expecting more of a mystery/thriller, but it was more than that. There were flashbacks, allowing the reader to get a glimpse into what happened all those years ago when the group committed a crime. You learn their motivations into why each of them did it and what led each of them to where they are now. It was more psychological than I expected, though the summary of the book clearly says psychological thriller! I don't want to give anything away, but eventually they end up on a path of revenge and it's a crazy ride. For the book being a bit on the shorter side, it was a solid listen with a well developed plot. Seth Trey did a good job with the narration. He was easy to understand and had good cadence. There were no issues with the recording.

I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher for an honest review.

Unique, unexpected, and quite good.

So I expected this book to be an adventure murder mystery but it was much more. It was an odd mix of intellect and philosophy in addition to action and mystery. Odd but good, I can say I haven't heard anything quite like this, although I did enjoy it. I'm not sure how to summarize without spoilers but its about friendship, life, and revenge. Definitely an excellent quick listen. The narrator does a fabulous job and really pulls you in. I would certainly listen to more books by both. I received a free review copy of this book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Meandering...

This is Matt Gale's 1st book. It focuses on a group of six friends who robbed a bank 7 years before. After one of the six is attacked, the others begin to discuss why and how the others were talked into the robberies. As they began to compare notes with one another, some troubling discoveries are made.

Seth Trey is a new to me narrator. I enjoyed his performance.
