Publisher's summary

The book that started it all! Little House in the Big Woods is the first book in Laura Ingalls Wilder's treasured Little House series, which is based on her life growing up as an American pioneer.

Told from four-year-old Laura's point of view, this story begins in 1871 in a little log cabin on the edge of the Big Woods of Wisconsin. Laura lives in the little house with her pa, her ma, her sisters Mary and Carrie, and their trusty dog, Jack. Pioneer life is sometimes hard for the family, since they must grow or catch all their own food as they get ready for the cold winter. But it is also exciting as Laura and her family celebrate Christmas with homemade toys and treats, do the spring planting, bring in the harvest, and make their first trip into town. And every night they are safe and warm in their little house, with the happy sound of Pa's fiddle sending Laura and her sisters off to sleep.

And so begins Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of a pioneer girl and her family. The nine Little House books have been cherished by generations of readers and listeners as both a unique glimpse into America's frontier history and a heartwarming, unforgettable story.

I enjoyed this book on my days off, I was a big fan of Laura Ingalls Wilder books as a child and I'm still am a fan. I purchased the actual book in Feb and have been relaxing with Cherry Jones lovely voice and Garth Williams illustrations after my birthday.

Great book, mediocre narration

I've enjoyed these books since childhood and it's nice to listen to them. I am not thrilled with the narrator. The books are still worth a listen. But I really wish she wouldn't sing.

what children’s literature should be

Hearing this story after so many years made me so nostalgic. This was the first “series” of books I read after getting my first library card as a young girl. I was fascinated by the way they had to raise, collect, and process everything they ate or used. This may also be one of the reasons I loved the Clan of the Cave Bear series so much. They worked so hard and were so busy that the simplest, most basic, things in life were the most precious. Family, food, shelter, music, community, acceptance...a purpose for everyone and everything.
My favorite parts were Laura talking to Pa; most memorable was the Maple Syrup and Grandma jigging!
Narration and music was excellent. Just perfect for this story!

Fantastic historical fiction for early grades

What did you love best about Little House in the Big Woods?

The performance is outstanding!

Any additional comments?

My seven year old and I both thoroughly enjoyed this book, though it was too advanced for my four-year-old to enjoy.

Watch out for the next book in this series, Little House on the Prairie. I wish we had skipped that one because there was so much racism in it... "savage" Indians who almost murder the family, etc. I certainly don't remember that from the TV series, and was disappointed we had spent our money on such a title. Also might give kids nightmares.

Little House in the Big Woods is set in Wisconsin and was unproblematic racially.

The parts about bears, panthers, guns, were scary for seven-year-olds, but they all turned out fine. Still, this is a better book to listen to together than leave a child alone with.
