Publisher's Summary

A landmark in children's literature, winner of the 1970 Newbery Medal, and the basis of an acclaimed film, Sounder traces the keen sorrow and the abiding faith of a poor African-American boy in the 19th-century South. The boy's father is a sharecropper, struggling to feed his family in hard times. Night after night, he and his great coon dog, Sounder, return to the cabin empty-handed. Then, one morning, almost like a miracle, a sweet-smelling ham is cooking in the family's kitchen. At last the family will have a good meal. But that night, an angry sheriff and his deputies come, and the boy's life will never be the same.

"The magnificent trained bass of Avery Brooks is a beautiful compliment to Armstong's prose; words and voice clearly paint images and evoke emotional responses from the listener." (AudioFile)

Beautifully read

The language in this moving story approaches poetry, and the narrator, with his deep, resonant voice, captures the cadences.

The power of reading and family

Wonderfully poetic story of hard ship and family trials in the south. The narration is very powerful and moving. It is so sad that a man steals some food and has to do hard labor for his crime. But that is what makes this story work is the hard ship and waiting for a resolution. to me the hero is the young man that learns to read.

Left me speechless

The narrator was amazing, and he brought this story to life. This book was one of those stories I had heard of but never read. Glad I read it with Avery Brooks narrating it. This book ripped my heart out and gave it back to me. short and amazing read. Another story which everyone should read to understand the stories and experiences of a lot of the minority living in the country.
