Publisher's Summary

While Laura Ingalls grows up in a little house on the Western prairie, Almanzo Wilder is living on a big farm in New York State. Here Almanzo and his brother and sisters help with the summer planting and fall harvest. In winter there is wood to be chopped and great slabs of ice to be cut from the river and stored. Time for fun comes when the jolly tin peddler visits or, best of all, when the fair comes to town.

This is Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved story of how her husband, Almanzo, grew up as a farmer boy far from the little house where Laura lived.

7 year old boy's review

This is the best book ever. I like that it is set on a farm and it all the cool stuff they did. They get to do lots of grown up stuff but also have fyun. The ending made me sad that it ends! I really like Almanzo's dad. It feels good inside to hear about him.

Narrator almost ruins this

The story is about a boy. Narrator should be a man’s (Almanzo) voice to truly fit the book character. This narrator’s voice does not fit the story.

She says, Al-MAN-zo with so much emphasis on the A in manzo , it starts to sound like nails on a chalk board. I have commonly heard is pronounced (Al-mon-zo), with a gentler emphasis on the A in manzo . She sounds like She is trying to hard to sound like a man/boy (it is a story about a boy). She does not do the book justice. This book is a classic boys book (as we all know). She almost ruined it for me.

Best if read on paper.

We haaaaaaated!!!!!! The narration for what used to be a good story!😌😒😩

The voices in the story are so blunt my children hated them. I hate are you out there for recommending this book as well. I am mad because they didn't sound anyway in anyway exciting. This book is highly recommended for those Who want to be bored out of their minds. There's nothing exciting about Almanzo getting cows. And I think it isn't quite fair I don't want to gets to eat anything he wants my sister is an older brother was working. The baby of the family doesn't need everything he wants!!!!! I do not recommend this book. Yours sincerely(very sincerely) pig widget

wonderful way to spend a childhood.

Enjoy this book as an adult with your children by your side. There are some great scenes in this book. I especially like the story of the pig and the candy, I also liked the story about the Colt STARLIGHT. the part where the parents go away for a week and the kids are left at home to cook and clean is hilarious, almost like the kids getting into the cookie jar with all the sugar they used. The narrator is perfect and has a wonderful voice for this book and makes it sound like you are really there as Almanzo. Laura Ingalls Wilder hit a homerun with me with this book and I'm 58 so I guess I'm just a kid at heart.

Fun, wholesome, outstanding!

We listened to this story as a family on a road trip, and I feel like it enriched all of our lives! Our young girls enjoyed, our teenage boys enjoyed it, and their parents enjoyed it too :)

Good books, Horrible narrator

I love the books, but the narrator is ruining them. Her voice is just irritating. She can’t even pronounce simple words such as “mow” - as in hay mow. Mow in this form rhymes with cow.

This is a really good book. Very descriptive and honest. Good for children to learn how people can look after themselves.

Almost perfect...

This is one of my all-time favourite books. I love the story, the subject, the style of writing, and the narration here almost did it justice. Just a shame that a couple of times I was distracted by what I am sure were mis-pronunciations and which had me reaching for the (American) dictionary to check ! I realise that there can be huge regional variations in accents and I thought Ms Jones voice well suited the material but there still has to be a standard pronunciation or the meaning is lost. Primer and primmer are not the same word!
