Help for the journey

I would highly recommend this to anyone who is seeking to understand the ups and downs in their life of faith. This gave me a new perspective on what St Ignatius calls spiritual desolation, and it gave me hope for the ability to reject it. It’s presented in an extremely practical way, packed full of examples. Definitely worth the time!

Wonderful advice

Only if I was aware of the Ignatian discernment method in n my youth. Better later than never. Invaluable as a Catholic and a Christian. This book is for anyone that seeks to increase their spiritual closeness to the Lord. The more I look for the mysteries of my Catholic Faith to guide me,m; the more I find great wisdom and guidance from numerous saints, scripture, and the magisterium. Feeling grateful for the faith the Lord has given me when I asked for his help.

Well Done

Gently presented, thoughtful, in-depth. The author is clearly a wise man himself. He breaks down Ignatius' ideas very simply.

Conversational look at the rules of discernment

Summary: A series of lectures based on The Discernment of Spirits: An Ignatian Guide for Everyday Living by Timothy Gallagher

I previously read Gallagher's Discernment of Spirits as part of my spiritual direction training. Because I thought it was a helpful book, I wanted to revisit it as I am more intentionally investigating discernment. This format is a series of lectures based on the book, but it is not the book's complete text. Gallagher is conversationally discussing the content of the book. It has been several years since I read it, but I remember many of the illustrations and points.

Ignatius' Rules of Discernment are intended as a guide for spiritual directors to help those they are working with to see patterns as they seek to discern the movement of God in their lives. Most of the rules are, in one way or another, about Consolation or Desolation. Ignatius relies heavily on emotion and internal feelings as one of the tools of discernment. He does not simply accept that emotion or feelings are God's method of speaking to us. Sometimes, feelings are just feelings. Sometimes, they are part of temptation. But sometimes, they are part of how God communicates with us. If God has created us with a personality, experiences, giftings, etc., then getting in touch with all of that will be part of becoming who God wants us to be.

Gallagher (and Ignatius) are Catholic, and some aspects of the rules will require some translation to a protestant context. But the rules of discernment should be part of a well-rounded teaching about discernment. Gallagher is not the only modern teacher of Ignatius' rules, but his books are worth reading.

Ignatius lived 500 years ago in a different culture and primarily spoke Spanish. Some aspects of the rules have problematic discussions of gender and certainly a pre-enlightenment understanding of how the spiritual world interacts with the physical world. Because of the differences in culture and language, a modern interpreter is helpful to understand how we should understand them today.
