Publisher's Summary

New York Times Best Seller

“A smart, wise, often side-splittingly funny master class in seeking God. Any spiritual seeker—from atheist to professional religious - will cherish this bravura tome from one of our great spiritual guides, in the lineage of C. S. Lewis, Henri Nouwen, Thomas Merton, Gandhi, and Mother Teresa. Hallelujah & amen!” (Mary Karr, author of Lit and The Liar’s Club)

One of America’s most beloved spiritual leaders and the New York Times best-selling author of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything and Jesus: A Pilgrimage teaches anyone to converse with God in this comprehensive guide to prayer.

In The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything, Father James Martin included a chapter on communicating with God. Now, he expands those thoughts in this profound and practical handbook.

Learning to Pray explains what prayer is, what to expect from praying, how to do it, and how it can transform us when we make it a regular practice in our lives. A trusted guide walking beside us as we navigate our unique spiritual paths, Martin lays out the different styles and traditions of prayer throughout Christian history and invites us to experiment and discover which works best to feed our soul and build intimacy with our creator.

Father Martin makes clear there is not one secret formula for praying. But like any relationship, each person can discover the best style for building an intimate relationship with God, regardless of religion or denomination. Prayer, he teaches us, is open and accessible to anyone willing to open their heart.

BRILLIANT

Due to my Sr years & vision impairment, the audible was my choice. Father reads it himself with great clarity, sincerity & passion. This is the perfect answer for those who insist there is only one way to have a relationship with God. There are many roads and Fr James Martin, SJ shows us all the options. My only regret about this publication in my life is that it wasn’t available to me 30 years ago. This would be a lovely Valentine’s gift for a friend, spouse, child or grandchild. If they don’t read it immediately, it will be a weapon on their bookshelf for when the Holy Spirit is working. Time to listen again; was awesome. If you are lost - at 4pm on Fr Jim personal Facebook, he will read and discuss. Please buy a copy and join us. I can’t wait! It is easy to purchase here or hardcopy on Amazon. GS

Narration & Content

Always excellent by James Martin.
Will use as a reference book. Appreciate the thoroughness & variety of prayer included during a time of struggle. Not all audio books have titles to their chapters. Highly appreciated!

Good book Ruined by Author’s Reading

I really, really like James Martin - I really, really do. This is a good book, and would have been far better had it been more concise/better edited. However, it is virtually unlistenable being read by the author himself. It is often great to hear an author read their own introduction of their book or to provide a postscript, but authors are almost never trained voice actors. Just as it it the thoughts and words of an author that make for a great book, it is the artistry of an accomplished voice actor that turns a good book into a great audiobook. Please Audible, don’t make this mistake again, either with Martin or any author who is not a notable voice actor. Potential listeners, do yourself a favor and just move on from this one.

A classic for the faithful and curious

Father Jim is an audiobook veteran and even more so an empathetic, thoughtful, and skilled spiritual writer. He and I are both from the Catholic faith tradition but hope this book can help all those who are either curious about entering into a deeper relationship with God or are already serious and need a tune-up.

Good for People of All Faiths or Those Searching for Faith

I found this book very enlightening. Though Father Martin’s is Catholic I think it is helpful for people of any faith looking to improve their prayer life. Not being Catholic myself I still found the lessons applicable. I enjoy listening to Father Martin who did a great job with the narration. I would highly recommend this book.

Seeking a deeper relationship with God?

Go no further! Fr. Jim explains prayer with the easiness of two friends enjoying a discussion over a cup of coffee by a warm and inviting fireside. I truly felt like Peter at Mt. Tabor wanting to dwell in the experience.
