Dressed in pajamas covered with stars, the little girl’s body is perfectly still, her arms folded neatly over her chest. The wildflowers decorating her hair scatter across the grass in the sharp breeze. Her lips are parted slightly, as if to whisper goodnight for the very last time....

When 12-year-old Holly Mitchell’s fragile little body is found on the steps of a mountainside church in the small town of Denton, a doll made from pine cones clasped tightly to her chest, Detective Josie Quinn rushes to attend the scene. She knows this little girl’s angelic face; her mother had offered Josie help when she’d needed it most.

Searching the girl’s house, Josie is devastated to find that Holly’s mother is dead, too, and her little sister is missing. But why has this family home been stripped of all sharp objects? Re-tracing her steps, Josie finally finds a secret hiding place with Holly’s sister inside, terrified, but alive. Moments later, another doll made of twigs turns up.

Certain the killer is close by, Josie holds the little girl tight and tries to coax answers from her, but it’s clear the pile of burnt photographs and letters found in the greenhouse is her only lead. No one is safe until Josie can figure out the dangerous secret that has escaped this remote family home.

Just when Josie is finally closing in on the killer, the unthinkable happens, a tragedy that shakes her to her very core. And on the windshield of her car: a third wooden doll. Could stopping this twisted monster from taking more innocent lives come at the ultimate price for Josie?

An absolutely gripping roller-coaster ride of a crime thriller from an Amazon, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal best-selling author. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, Robert Dugoni, and Rachel Caine.

I’ve listened to all these books and I love the narrator. She speaks well in all of these books but in this story…..there was a discussion about produce (no spoiler here) and it was always pronounced PRA-duce not PRO-duce. What in god’s name is up with that PRA-nunciation? It was ANNOYING! Lol

But overall, still a good story.

It’s good but there was one word that killed me….

Another great Josie Quinn book, they just get better and better.
But WTH Lisa, Lizette, really, really.
Can't wait for the next one.

Semi Spoiler Alert

Great book and good narration if you can get past her funny use of the O vowel. Weird pronunciation of words like produce, which is used often and can be irritating. But other than that a great listen.

Great book!

I really enjoy this book series. I have enjoyed all of them but liked this one the best. Kept my attention from minute one. Great characters.

Excellent book

Produce produce produce produce produce. Geez. Did nobody catch that ? Is this a dialect I don’t know about? Mispronunciation drove me crazy.

Produce

Some of the narrator’s mispronunciations stopped me listening cold and had me shaking my head. I live in the area where Josie Quinn’s books are centered and I’ve never heard anyone call produce “prah-duce”. Other words too were prah-nounced weirdly. Having a narrator who lives in the area would do much to enhance the listening experience. Earlier books in the series were really tough to listen to because sooooo many words, place names, etc. were wildly mispronounced. This narrator is a definite improvement but should be sharper with the pronunciations of words suited for the local area.

Worth repeating…..

Mispronounced words happen but OMG how many times can the word “produce” be said in a book and mispronounced over, and over, and over again?!?!? Don’t these readings get proofed before it gets out to the public? I haven’t finished this book yet so I’ll get back to you after I’m done. It just really raked on my nerves.

Not done yet but UGH!!!!!!

I was caught in the story and listened to the end, which is not usual for me. The narrator wove seamlessly through the characters and I just had to find out how it all ended. It was a very good story!

Listened to the end!

I’m a big fan of this series. Thankfully the author continues to craft an interesting plot.

Another fun read

the setup…
It’s the day of Detectives Josie Quinn and Noah Fraley’s wedding and they’re surrounded by family, friends and colleagues, ready to celebrate at the Harper’s Peak Resort. From her hotel room, Josie sees some unusual activity and knows something is wrong when two of the department’s detectives and the police chief join in. Josie joins them, finding the body of a 12-year old girl lying dead on the chapel steps in peaceful repose, right where the wedding is scheduled to be. And it’s someone she knows.

the heart of the story…
They were that close! But you know Josie, this apparent murder will take precedence over her wedding. Things get worse when she goes to the girl’s home and finds her mother dead on the floor. And, it gets creepier when she and Detective Gretchen Palmer search the house for the youngest daughter, eight-year old Emily, and can’t find her but know she’s there. It’s beyond puzzling.

the narration…
Kate Handford has firmly imprinted her voice in my head as the voice of this series and that’s a very good thing. Her storytelling skills are wonderful.

the bottom line…
There are so many twisty paths to explore with this one. Emily knows so much but is unwilling to share when asked, only giving the sign for “hush.” There are mental health issues presented in the most respectful and insightful ways, leaving me with a whole new perspective about those suffering from obsessive compulsive disorders (OCD). There’s also a tragedy here that broke my heart and I never saw it coming. This was exceptional plotting and character design and, even though I figured out the killer before the reveal, the journey getting there had me mesmerized.

Tragic!
