Publisher's summary

Illegal sorcery is on the rise. The quiet life Jon once had before venturing to the capital is but a distant memory. Murderous threats to the throne skulk through city streets. A rebellious army is growing.

But the king - the overwhelmed ruler of Lycast who Jon has sworn to protect - is just one of many targets. The mages who use this illegal sorcery have a leader, and this leader wants something from Jon.

It wasn’t long ago that Jon came to the castle with seven other sorcerers desperate to prove themselves. While Jon considers many of them his friends, at least one might actually be his enemy.

Those plotting against the king are everywhere, most posing as ordinary citizens. During the hunt for these sorcerers, Jon will learn just how powerful his own sorcery can become, but at what cost? Sacrifices must be made no matter Jon’s choices. Whatever he decides to do, it has to be done quickly. The traitor in the castle is waiting for something, and no one seems to have any idea what it is.

Pros and Cons.

Book is worth a listen, but I’m not sure if I will finish the series.
Pros:
Very original and interesting magic system.
Engaging combat and plenty of action.
Dynamic with demigods and magical creatures.

Cons:
Not sure why there needs to be so much sexual tension between an 18 year old man and 14 year old girl. Even though nothing happens, it still seems unnecessary and inappropriate.

Main character is over powered in my opinion. Besides fighting the main villains, he never struggles with anything. Makes for a bland character with little development

Not sure why the book has so much time dedicated to bath time. Seems unnecessary and tedious.

Social interactions are clumsy. The main character is socially awkward and has little charisma, but all other characters seem enchanted by him and do whatever he says. He often makes foolish suggestions and they all just follow him like he is a genius.

Politically correct for a medeviel fantasy book

This book is interesting but hard to believe in some respects. It is a good idea but learning sorcery and listening to pubescent problems is a stretch for me

Great 2nd book, main character lacking.

I really enjoy the story so far, the author does a great job at keeping the reader entertained, I look forward to the next book. Characters in the book do not have a lot of depth, but are still enjoyable. My only issue is with the main character who is so stuck on himself, the most handsome, the biggest muscle, the tallest, the only one who can do this, or the only one who can do that, Mr. perfect. all other characters seem to just be lucky to be in his presence. I don’t know if the author meant to make a character who can do no wrong, and loves himself. I guess the fact that he tries to mask this big ego character into a sheath of humility as if he actually cares just sits wrong with me. But if you can overlook the small character issue, the story is worth listening to in my opinion.

blah.

Inconsistent and simple, magic system only redeeming quality.

HERE ARE MY PROBLEMS SPOILERS!
Is mana possessed by all people and can they develop it if they choose and if so why are mages so rare as stated? why are the mages so clueless on how magic works? why is the MC telling his friends to conserve their strength by limiting their casting one minute then the next running around healing everyone he can get his hands on while supposedly his main priority is to protect the king? why is he worried about killing some horses in the middle of a battle, especially when he has grown up hunting and killing many animals. why one minute is MC's goal to chop a leg of some horses then next he's trying to jump into the carriage. Love interest family supposedly wants to marry her off to some rich powerful guy, if sorcerers are so rare how are they not the most powerful people in the land? king keeps all his treasure in one chest that can be easily carried away and seems to be incredibly incompetent, why do people still follow this guy? how hard is it to find a mole in the castle? why one minute is supposed to be a huge secret that these kids are training at the castle then the next it seems to be ok for them to be blabbing information to random bar maids and their parents? everyone seems to be laboring under the idea that that the kings life is in danger when clearly these dark wizzards can kill him anytime they choose, wtf is going on? save the bad guy from certain death just for a public execution and he escapes, how predictable. Why not just mount his head on the gate and be done with it? Why is there so much tackling and jumping on people backs? you guys have swords use them. MC the expert swordsman with nothing left to learn can't use his left hand.

Great book 2

Story continues seamlessly and the action is through out the book. Romance abounds but yet is uncertain.

An amazing continuation

This was a perfect continuation of the first book, it further establishes the world and gives you more information on how the magic system works. We get to be further accustomed to the people and the setting without departing from the story. And the ending had me on the edge of my seat!

Very disappointing

The first book in this series was quite promising. This book on the other hand was very difficult to get through. I would not recommend if you liked the pace of the first book.

It's better than Eragon but not Brandon Sanderson

Easy fantasy tale, good versus bad, oops, shades of grey. All the usual tropes packed in.
The narration is superb and adds up for something lacking.

Disappointing

Poorly written. The lead character is unlikeable due to his own narcissistic tendencies. There’s constant character exposition leading me to believe that the writer cannot tell a story without the characters telling the reader what is going on via monologue. It’s fine once, but this seems to be the only form of storytelling that the writer knows.

Enjoyable.

This book is easily as good as the first It takes the story forward in a creative and exciting manner. I look forward to the next novel in this series.
Again, the narrator is excellent.

Can't tell if I just hate the narrator

Pretty much every character sounds exactly the same and I became insanely irritated but Dark..... Mages. It is possible to say dark mage! I also find Jon a complete twat, but I can't tell if that's due to the narrator making him sound like a self absorbed idiot or if he actually is one. Might try reading the last book as the story does have potential, just really dislike the narrator even though he has a nice voice.

Great story development and terrific characters

This is a great series, with some excellent character development and storylines. Simon Vance's performance is pitch perfect and his verbal characterisation of each character is a testament to his range and ability. Looking forward to the third installment.

Wrong age group for me

Already a little sceptical after the first book, the second firmly cemented my feeling that this series is aimed at the 10-14 or at most a very young 15yo age group - even allowing for the odd allusion to 'having a good time'. Some very cringey 'how to deal with feelings' preachy sort of psycho-pop (not that the methods described aren't valid for dealing with grief etc. - just so obvious I literally winced throughout). Not sure I can continue with these, and may appeal to an appropriate age group - but I also hate leaving a story unfinished.

Very enjoyable.

sorcerers in training, loyal to the king who has gathered them into his castle and as good as into his family. mystery, dark magic, battles for power, and demi gods also present, fighting their own battles, that crossover into the wars facing the humans. A forest, where magic grows the deeper you venture, and the creatures are hunters, large and powerful, and a demi god, turned beast sleeps at the entrance to another world..

please be publishing the next books as soon as they are ready. which i hope is somehow later today.

Im loving this series.

A little magic, mystery romance, surprise, intrigue and such wonderful characters all.
