Publisher's summary

A ranger’s duty. The rotten heart of a king. Rebellion spilled from the blood of family.

Rew, the King’s Ranger, accepted a role on the far edge of the realm to avoid the morass of intrigue and betrayal that bleeds from the heart of the kingdom. His only desire is to shoulder the burden he’s taken, to protect the village of Eastwatch, and to monitor the wilderness beyond.

When three youths are arrested for petty theft in the village and beg for his help, Rew’s oldest friend insists he take responsibility for them. By ties stronger than steel, Rew is forced onto a path he knows leads to chaos and death. Through a resurgence of monsters summoned in ages prior, war between the royal line, and backstabbing treachery, the King’s Ranger will battle to grant the youths a life he never had a chance of.

But as they venture farther from the wilderness he calls home, Rew can feel the magical pull at the center of the kingdom, demanding he return to face his past and his family’s terrible legacy. Only he knows the secret of the king, and the risk it poses to the entire realm.

The King’s Ranger is a classic fantasy adventure, perfect for fans of Michael J Sullivan, Brent Weeks, James Islington, and AC Cobble’s Benjamin Ashwood Series.

Too much travel

The three book series has entirely too much walking and the hidden plot is maddening. I think the series could have been so much better. Really nice potential.

Wow!

I can’t believe how much I loved these books! I hadn’t read anything by AC Cobble prior to listening to them but I will definitely be looking into more of his work! This story is fast paced with some wonderful world building and characters that you will love instantly!
Simon Vance is one of my absolute FAVORITE narrators and as usual he didn’t disappoint!

Slow buy in, but worth it.

Hard to buy into the whole plot at times, or at
least the rationale of the characters to do what they do. Yet, over time, I was sucked in and enjoyed the teasing mystery and twists in this series.

Predictable, yet amicable characters and held my interest.

Predictable but amicable characters held my interest. I doubt it will warrant a second read any time this decade, but I am looking forward to book 4 and I’ll likely explore more of Cobble’s writing. Simon Vance never disappoints!

Enjoyable, fun twist

Excellent story, like the different narrator, voices, looking forward to reading the rest and I hope a suspenseful ending.

Extremely Pleasant

This was a hidden gem for me. I first thought the characters were a little bland but I was quickly corrected. I enjoy the series and I bought extra credit to get the rest!

Good story but needs improvments

This a good story, follows like most other fantasy books and not the most original. The story flows but the author does not add enough descriptions. And relays on the reader to make decisions, I like when you can essentially paint a picture of the character or the scene in my mind.

Narrations is good and I am going to the complete series. Just felt like improvements could be made.

meh

i’m generally pleased with simon vance’s performances, but this one felt dull. i got the sense that reading the narrator’s parts (as opposed to dialogue) was a chore and bored him to death. it sounded monologue. the writing is generic. i went with a 3 rather than a 4 because irritated me how altruistic and predictable rew and anne are. it gave me the vibes of young adult/children’s literature. those were the lasting impressions of note. the plot itself is…whatever. nothing bad about it. nothing stands out either. i do not expect to continue reading the series unless i find myself exceedingly bored and having read everything else. i picked up the first three books boxed set for a bargain.
